How can Sonic sell better?

So the topic is: How can Sonic shift more copies? We all know that Generations didn't sell all that well, and Colours sold better but still nothing special. So how can SEGA and Sonic Team get him to sell better?

I'm honestly......not sure. They seem to advertise (With public demos and such) and they get good scores from critics now, so what's the issue? A curious case is Unleashed, which sold 2.8 million as far as I know. What caused that game to sell so well? Was it the Werehog that most of the fanbase hates? Does SEGA need to alienate it's hardcore fans to sell well? I honestly don't have any answers, and I hope you guys do.

Sonic Warped [Video]

Hey there SSMB!

Some of ya'll know me as that dude who does that stuff with that Gmod thing-a-majiger.

I've been developing a series called "Sonic Warped" which has Sonic in a Sliders like plot in which he is sent flying through different portals to different worlds (or games to us).

The basic plot:

"Sonic the Hedgehog has always taken on Dr. Robotnik's challenges. While infiltrating Robotnik's new forest logging base, Sonic finds himself in a whole mess of trouble when Robotnik's lazer fails tearing a portal in time and space. Sonic must find a way to open the portal in each world he visits. There is a task that must be completed in order for the portal to reappear. Sonic must continue opening portals until he finds the right one that will bring him home."

Here is episode 1:

The idea seems basic but I promise you that it's not an easy task creating this series. I've put myself through new challenges to achieve the best animation to my abilities. I know that there are other people out there in the Sonic community that have shown much better animations than I, but I do these because I just love to entertain. I'm very open to criticism and would love to know how I can improve. Some things I can't fix so try to be reasonable.

Episode 2 should be finished by the end of the month. Enjoy!

Turning in 3d

So this topic is about Sonic's turning in 3d. Which game you think did it best, how it can be improved, how you would do it personally, etc etc. Myself, I think Generations gets it best overall, but there's still room for improvement. Make it so he controls like he did in SA1 at low speeds (and while you're at it, reduce his level of accel to Adventure 1's, add sloping level design to make up for slower accel, yadda yadda), and gradually increase the turning arc, not have it jump into, "turning-impossible", mode at a certain speed like Generations.

I'd like to hear your opinions and experiences. I'm all with the 360, the biggest reason being the controls, very reminiscent of the Dreamcast. Plus a floating D-pad for games like Sonic 4 and parts of Generations feels very appropriate, a little like the Genesis. I tried the Wii more than a couple times and it still feels awkward, I've yet to try the PS versions though so can't speak on that.

Advice thread

Not particularly sure if this was allowed, but the rules didn't really seem to talk about this.

So this thread is for artists who want a bit of advice for making their pieces, or maybe some help finding references.

I'll be blunt and start with my problem. I am trying to make a drawing of the Solaris battle, and I've got a grand idea in place. I'm looking to try something similar in vein to this:

The problem comes with making the perspective along with the environment. Since the place of battle is a void with a bunch of floating rocks, I'm struggling with finding a way to capture this grand perspective. (I'd post the sketch but my scanner is out of commission.) Does anyone have any advice to share on how to make the perspective work?

A Sonic' 06 Remake {Project S06R}

This post will be updated then and now so do check it.

Okay guys, before I say anything, I'd like to say this. This is a project that is in its planning stages only. It is not confirmed how far this will go on.
Now, you might have heard about this or seen this in the Gens mods thread or my status update. Yes, we are going to remake Sonic The Hedgehog (2006). We will be using Generations as a base.

Let me start from the top, I got this idea from Melpronto. Then, I thought "if SSMB, with all our talents, make our a 06' remake!? I mean it would be awesome... We can have storywriters (to change story wherever needed), scriptwriters (to make the new scenes), animators for CG (if not possible we will just use in-game thing, I guess), programmers like Dario and Melpronto, voice actors, musicians (to remake sound effects and tracks)... I mean we got everything, let's do a community project! I can help out.. I can direct but I think maybe someone older should do that...It's easy to say but hard to put together...but with enough dedication, we can do it. " Those were my exact thoughts. I was then approached by A Match in Oil Ocean Zone (Match) that he thought it was a nice idea and there we started planning. We want to look for talents here in every aspect. We got everything. If we can't find everything, we bring in Retro and for cutscenes, 3DMD (Match thought of 3DMD)

So now for the main plan:

1. I think we must get in contact with Melpronto first. I think he will be our lead programmer. He has to like know all this. Then, we get people like TwilightZoney and Dario. We get the programming team settled. This team will handle main levels and bosses. If you are wondering how we will merge all the section in the levels of 06, it will be like, for example: Wave Ocean had two sections... we combine both together. What I suggest is this and if you are concerned about the music for the Mach-speed Zone, we can do it like Speed Highway in Gens. Like the main level music will transit into the next one. You've seen the video by falkdemoreel or something like that...the one with Rooftop Run and he does the interactive music theme thing yeah... What we can do is the normal music plays and then when the level converts to the next section, the music transition is triggered. So yeah, gettit?

2. On the topic of music, I think in the development stages, we'll do story, programming and yadayada first. We can get the musicians in SSMB to remix the songs (Faithful remixed are best for this I guess) and all. Vocal songs will be done too with singers and all. The music must be more to the faithful side. We can't use DoaA remix from TSSMA'11 for example. It's too different.

3. We will do all the levels and bosses and cutscenes.. I don't if we can create 3 story modes in Generations...so I guess we do 1 story as 1 game. Episodic, ya know?... Characters should be same as 06. The story...okay, we need to remove the Sonic-Elise romance. No kiss in the end and all. (More info at a later time).

Now.

The Team of Project S06R:

Head, Main Storywriter & Scriptwriter:
Faseehudeen

Assistant Head:
A Match in Oil Ocean Zone

Assistant Storywriter:
Wearied Flames

Musicians:
Steve
VizardJeffhog
Wearied Flames (Aquatic Base)

Programmers:

Animators:

Voice Talents and Singers:

Testers:

Storyboard Planners AKA Cutscene Directors:

Do sign up if show interest and say which part you want to help in.

Should Sonic be in a 4 Player 2-D Side Scroller?

The title explains its self,

Should Sonic be in a 4 player 2-D side scroller?

Since Mario,Kirby, and Rayman have done it and those titles have done very well. Should Sega try something like that? Personally I would say yes because even though that style of gameplay has already been dealt with Sega could do it and it would become a big hit(If it were to be done right). I really did enjoy the side scrolling mini game from Sonic Colors and if Sega expanded from that and make it a downloadable game or a console game it could hold up. I would see it better as a downloadable game and for the characters and story... I really wouldn't be expecting much since the other 4 player 2-D side scrollers didn't have much of a story or wide selection of characters. Hell I woudn't be supperised if the only characters that would be chosen would be sonic recolored 4 times and the story would probably be as basic as sonic 1's story(Dr.Robotnik is kidnapping Sonic's friends go stop him). The levels would either:

A.) Do the Sonic 4 method and make stages based off of old ones

or

B.) Actually have new levels and enviorments(But I highly doubt it because Sonic has basically been in so many different enviorments it's hard to create ones that he hasn't already been through).

So yeah, that's what I think the game would be like but the bigger question is... How do you guys think this game would be like?

Themes

Through 21 years of Sonic history Sonic have explored quite a few different themes. World travelling, space parks, medieval times, arabian themes, time travelling and more. What kind of themes you would like to see in future Sonic games?

I'd like to see game that would take place in.. Japan! Sonic came from this place after all, right? I'd love to see hub worlds based on different Japanese towns and cities. Think about stages we could have! Nara, Nansei islads, Nagoja and even more! Japanese fields, forests, moutains! Think about all these possibilities!

One more main series game for Sonic: To be or not to be?

With the next generation of game platforms on the horizon being ushered in by Nintendo (for the first time since 1985), A new road lies ahead for the Sonic the Hedgehog series, and a guaranteed clean slate for every game franchise under the sun. It has been a long seven or so years for this console generation, and although it finally seems to be nearing its end in twilight years, Should Sega hold onto their next big Sonic title or should they go one more time with a main series entry? (notwithstanding Sonic 4, and ASR being their big game for 2012).

As you know, there have been at least 4 main Sonic games in this current generation thus far, and while games like Sonic Colors presented a fresh start for both Sonic Team, and the series as a whole for this gen, Sonic Generations, acted very much like closure for this generation; providing a fitting end for things to come for the series, and I personally could not have see a better theme be used for last years anniversary.

With all that in mind, what do you think Sega should do for the next big main series title? Do you think they can squeeze off run more round from the chamber as a swan song for Sonic in this generation, or should they wait it and see what the next generation has to offer before stepping up to the plate?

I personally of the latter for what they should do, as I believe the recently announced ASR2 is a great stop gap for the main series, while Sonic 4 handles the more modest entries.

Sonic's Re-think/New Direction 2012

So, A while back SEGA/Sonic Team said they would soon be giving Sonic a makeover and a Re-Think.
I'm guessing soon enough a new Sonic game will be announced but what do you think there next move will be? Do you think they'll stay with the Hedgehog Engine to play safe or create something completely new and risk a repeat of Sonic 06?

What would you like to see? Would you like a full fledged 3D game like the Adventure series but in HD?
Would you want it to have 2D Sections included like the Unleashed saga?
Should new characters be introduced or should it start back off with the basics and slowly ease friends back into the games?

What other ideas do you think should be added to the future of Sonic The Hedgehog?

Character Abilities/Movesets (And mechanics too, I guess)

As Sonic has changed over time, so has his some of his abilities. Sonic 1 through 3 and Knuckles (excluding CD) introduced us to the Spin Dash, Insta-Shield, and the roll. These moves were very fun to use, and the enemy placement and level design both complemented the moves, allowing for the moves to be used to their full potential. These games did the two moves well.

Then we hit Sonic Adventure. Sonic Adventure retained some of the classic moves, while trading some classic moves for several new ones. For example, the spin dash made a return, while the Insta-Shield was taken out in favor of the Homing Attack. However, the fact whether or not the level design utilized the Spin Dash is arguable. Sonic Adventure also introduced us to the Light Speed Dash, although many criticize it for taking far too long to charge it up. Now we move on to Sonic Adventure 2. Sonic Adventure 2 retained the moveset of Sonic Adventure, while introducing new ones such as the Bounce Attack and the somersault. The Bounce Attack was somewhat fun to use, while the somersault constantly killed the games pace. The Light Speed Dash also made its return in Sonic Adventure 2, although the player could use the move instantaneously, rather than charging it up before use. Like Sonic Adventure however, the fact whether or not the level design complemented the moves is arguable. Concluding the Dreamcast Era, Sonic Heroes comes in and removes the spin dash, replacing it for a roll(?), while other moves are more or less the same from Sonic Adventure 2.

Fast forward two years later, and we come to Sonic the Hedgehog. Sonic the Hedgehog had the same moveset as Sonic Adventure 2, and it added two more moves (excluding gems) although more broken. For example, the light speed dash didn't work half of the time, charging the spin dash did absolutely nothing, and aerial movement while using the Bound Attack was extremely limited. The level design did not complement these moves at all. The new moves Sonic the Hedgehog introduces fared slightly better. The slide (Antigravity?) and the sliding kick thing was somewhat efficient in killing enemies, although the slippery controls makes it a bit difficult. After this game, we witness a massive change with the introduction of Sonic Unleashed.

Sonic Unleashed, in terms of its moveset, was radically different than any other title before it. For the first time in the console main series, the boost is featured. The boost in Unleashed (and Generations) was a way to get instant speed, along with a quick way of killing enemies. Sonic Unleashed also introduced the stomp, a way to instantly kill any aerial movement, and get to the ground. Both of these moves were used well, although some may say that these moves were used too much. In addition to the stomp, Unleashed also included the wall jump. Sonic Unleashed retained the light speed dash from the Adventure series, although moves such as the Spin Dash and the roll have been eliminated.

Sonic Colors had the same moves from Unleashed (minus the light speed dash), with the addition of a double jump, and the homing attack was mapped to a single button. The double jump was a semi-decent platforming aid, a nice move to save Sonic from falling in bottomless pits. Finally, we reach Sonic Generations. Sonic Generations (minus the extra unlockable moves) has the same moveset from Unleashed, although it restricts the usage of the light speed dash and the wall jump to certain marked rings and wall jump panels.

So yeah, a brief(?) history of Sonic's moveset. However, what moves from Sonic (or any other character) would you like to see improved upon, or what moves would you like to see return, or what move ideas do you have?
