I'll brace myself for the hate that this may cause, but Sonic and the Secret Rings. Virtually... ALL of it.
I have honestly never played a Sonic game with such gut-wrenchingly horrible controls and poorly thought out mission modes and game design. The visuals can be nice (especially the parchment cutscenes which I think are beautiful), but the on-rails and 'always in autopilot' style of Sonic's movement just makes everything a chore. Jumping, attacking, backing up (Oh GOD backing up if I need to...), motion control when it's implemented (flying pots, catapults, flying carpets or whatever)... It's just unresponsive and infuriating, especially on some of the side missions. The mission in Pirate Storm where you're challenged with finishing with no rings (as well as many others like it) has caused me to ragequit on more than one occasion. When you're constantly pushed forwards and the team puts a sea of rings and a stupidly narrow path AND platforming in front of you with no way of getting hurt before the end? I'm sorry, but that's just dickmove-ish.
Call it crazy... but I would MUCH rather play 06 start-to-finish again than to just partly play Secret Rings again.
Agreed. On everything, especially the part about preferring to play through '06 rather than a part of SR. I tried to play Leviated Ruin just for fun last night and was so frustrated. I gave up while trying to switch rails correctly to get some Red Ring or something. I'm amazed that at one point I managed to play through the storyline and get a Ring leveled up as highly as I did.
Neat time for this topic to pop up. The other day I hooked up my Wii for the first time in a while and decided to play some of the GC/Wii Sonic games, partly to prepare for Generations and partly because I hadn't played some of them for a long time and I wanted to see how my opinions would change.
Earlier today I popped in Heroes and oh man. Oh man oh man oh man. I'm telling you. I started a new save file and kicked things off with Team Sonic. And you know what? I was really enjoying myself. Tails' voice still bugs me but other than that I was having a blast. By the end of Power Plant I was questioning why I always disliked Heroes so much. Then the Casino stage came up. Forced pinball tables make me cry. I tried going through some of those half-pipe things going around the tables to no avail. There were some dash arrows in front of the entrance for a half-pipe, so after five tries I managed to hit one. Sonic started to make his way up the half-pipe...then lost all momentum and rolled back down the way he came. That display repeated itself as I stared at my TV in disbelief. What good is a dash panel that doesn't give you enough speed to finish something like that? That's where I gave up. I might try it again in a bit and just skip the Casino stages, but man.
The Emerald Hunting stages in SA2 also bother me. The first stage for both characters is fine because it's a nice little confined space with some things to uncover and explore. But by the end of the game you're in these huge, sprawling open-ended areas looking for one emerald shard at a time with a wonky radar. Emerald Hunting pretty much ensures that I never play through the storyline of SA2 again.
There are probably more things that make me rage (Silver's ball puzzle, thank goodness for the glitch), but I can't seem to remember them right now.
