So I've been thinking. What if Sonic had a run and brake button (the triggers on an Xbox 360 controller maybe), instead of pushing the stick to move? Now, I'm not saying that Sonic stages should become like racetracks, i think it might just be a better way to handle turning and camera (not saying that traditional platformer controls can't work if done correctly). I think this because with an acceleration and deceleration button, you could have better turning. Sonic's turning radius would depend on the speed he was going and how much you pushed the stick to the left or right, just like a car. The camera would stay mostly behind Sonic, but have a delay, like Sonic Adventure, but toned down a MASSIVE amount.. How much it dose this (never more than 45 degrees to Sonic) is dependent on how sharp you are turning and obviously, it puts itself behind Sonic again after you stop turning. I figure this would be an easier way to make camera and turning work better than they have in previous games.

What do you think? Discuss!

Run and brake button? God no.

I do however hold the belief that Trackmania is the best 3D Sonic game that Sega never made.

But what about things like boosting, jumping, platforming etc. It would be kind of awkward, no? Race controls work best for racing games because they don't use these sorts of things, or at least not much.

Not sure if serious....

Anyways, I once had someone on SEGA forums say to me. "If you like modern Sonic gameplay, get out of this fanbase. Go play a racing game. It's exactly the same. You can even get S ran--Err....first place!"...

I lol'd.

There really is no technical reason why Sonic can't be given better turning at boosting speeds.

Can't really say I'm a fan. Controls like that would be really uncomfortable for a platforming game, it just wouldn't work.

It'd be crap for a platformer. Which is what Sonic is. A platformer.

Although some way to brake quickly might be useful if it can't be done by holding the other direction.

Hasn't Sonic played like a car since Unleashed?

I doubt it would work in a platformer setting, but something like Trackmania actually sets out to capture more Sonic-style philosophies in a racing game than every single Sonic racing game out there tries to do. Taking advantage of speed in order to take advantage of physics to beat certain levels is pretty much what Trackmania is about, and I'm positively shocked that no Sonic racing game tries to emulate this game's design.

This is exactly how Sonic R played. It worked... okay, for Sonic R, since that was a racing game. Ever tried slowing down and mucking around in Sonic R like it's a platformer though?

Here's a clue; it sucks for that.

No...?

*plays Colours*

Certainly feels like a car to me. With everything but move and brake applied to buttons, he plays like a car. Changing the controls in such a way would only make platforming much, much worse. Sonic R isn't suited traditional to Sonic gameplay any more than Unleashed and Colours (especially talking about the Wii versions), and it has exactly car like controls.

Sonic R had magnets in the walls so by proxy I don't think that counts.

You want Sonic to control like a car? There's always Sonic Unleashed.

Now that I think about it, all you guys are right. it would NOT work well. That control scheme would not be good for anything moderately slow paced. It sounded good on paper to me, but once I think about it in practice........ I made this post because someone on Destructiod made the post "Why not just make Sonic control like a car?" and I wanted to try to expand on that concept and see if it could work in terms of gameplay, but looking back on what I wrote......Yeah, no.

They only gave him Nitro and a drift, but no gas and brake yet.
