This sounds pretty good, but admittedly I have never played any Dragon Quest. Is it a great series, in your opinion? If so, would this or another game be a good place to start?

I've only played Dragon Quest IX, but I'd say it's pretty fun. One of the things that Dragon Quest is known for is still playing quite like it did on the NES. If you want to see if like it, try looking into 9 or the remakes of 4, 5, or 6, all on the DS.

On another note, the fact that it'll be online focused is interesting, but I'm worried how it'll work out on the Wii version.

I know Japan is crazy over the series, but I just don't like RPG's very much. Especially turn based RPG's. I might give it a try just to see what all the fuss is about though.

Not a big fan of JRPGs and even less of MMORPGs. If the single-player mode has a good story and all, I might get it.

Yeah, bit worried there might be less of a story because of the online aspect. In 9, your other party members were all just picked out at an inn and had no effect on the story because of the coop mode.

Yeah that doesn't sound very interesting. Story is one of the most important parts of an RPG IMHO. I hate when a games single player suffers because the developers feel the need to focus on multiplayer.

Lolol. Online focused Dragon Quest. On the Wii.

Thank goodness I lost all interest in this series with IX.

http://www.andriasan...x_offline_play/

Square Enix addressed the issue of the game's online system at its support page today. In a brief response to the question "Is it not possible to play without an internet connection," the support page says "It's possible to play offline for the first few hours after the start of the game. However, to play all elements of the game, an internet connection is required."

What the fuck. The only console I have is a Wii and I already think the game shouldn't be on it. Hoping this isn't true and he means you need online to access DLC or something.

EDIT: Are you fucking shitting me.

Great, so poor online you have to pay for.

The subscription fee might very well end up like Monster Hunter Tri in that it only applies to Japan. It'd be stupid of them to put it on there in the West for a game that's only become well known as of recent, and so far it's just a TBA so it doesn't necessarily have to be real. But DRM, let alone for Wii of all things, is just sad.

There's been mixed messages from different SE reps, so I'm hoping some of the stuff about the online isn't true.

@Speedfreak

Yeah, it did kind of bug me how IX's party members were lifeless dolls, but all the other games (other than X, apparently) have parties that are composed of actual characters.

Blue Dragon was probably the last time Toriyama made remarkable Character Designs.

I wonder just how long they are gonna stick with "we are making JRPG's like if we're stuck in the 80's". I guess the Japanese just really love it.

It looks like it would work fine on Wii U, but Wii? I don't know, man. I'm hoping it ends up like MHT, though. Free in NA and EU because we wouldn't pay for it.

It seems like a lazy cashgrab honestly. Release Wii version, then later release Wii U version that's superior in every way, only it doesn't seem it'll have any actual extras other than looking and working bettter.

Yeah... mixed feelings about the direction they're taking with this, but I love Dragon Quest enough that I'm definitely going to keep an eye on it.

I was really hoping that DQX would be a more typical JRPG in the vein of DQVIII, but I guess DQIX's success convinced them to take things in a different direction. I still enjoyed DQIX (and DQIII, which obviously wasn't online but had a similar party creation system), so that's not a huge issue, but leading a party of soulless drones around instead of real characters puts a huge limit on what you can do with the story. My favourite game in the series is DQV, and a huge chunk of the things that made me love that game would be completely impossible to replicate in IX or X.

On the subject of online, remember that Nintendo manages Dragon Quest releases in the West. This could influence the pay to play aspect.

I think the game would do horrible if they forced the US to "pay to play". The series just isn't nearly as popular hear in the states. Plus the fact that everyone feels Nintendo + Online = LOL.

I've never played a DQ but knowing a superior WiiU version of X is in the works has killed any chance of me picking this up on Wii to be honest. It's a shame too because other than a few games the Wii release schedule is.....

I need to go online to play this? Not going to get it then. That's a very stupid decision.
