Sonic is still Sonic, no matter the design

Okay, what is this fuss about Sonic's design? I'm aware that a topic exists for this before, but I had to get off my chest on this one.

I mean, you got the "classic" Sonic fans who hate the modern design and want nothing more then a complete remake of the Genesis trilogy, and even if that were to happen, they would still find something to moan about (Just look at Sonic Generations, SEGA gave them the "classic" Sonic game that they wanted for years, but now they're whining over the fact that "classic" Sonic is mute and doesn't have a voice as opposed to his modern counterpart). Then there are the "modern" Sonic fans, who are not familiar with the classic games as they are with the modern ones.

And seriously, "Porcupine Man"? That's one of the most screwed-up things that unpleasant classic fans call modern Sonic, and I wish they'd stop that and start respecting others' views.

Besides, SEGA is making Sonic Generations where you get to play both versions of Sonic, so you should be happy about that.

I may like the modern Sonic games, but I also like the classic games, too. I don't go around whining over what is supposed to be the creator's choice. Sonic is SEGA's character, not mine. I am only a fan of the series, nothing more. All I ask you is to feel the same way, fellow Sonic fans. It's not hard.

Personally, I think Sonic has just gotten better with age. However, just because I like the modern design the best does not mean I hate the classic design. I appreciate both designs. Besides, if you waste your time away whining over a character design like it's a real person, then you have issues. Designs evolve with time as well, they need to, or otherwise they get old. I doubt that Sonic would have gotten all the popularity if he has keeping his old design and never updating it.

I don't know what the big deal is. He's still blue, he still runs at high speeds, and he is still a hedgehog. Character design does not affect the quality of gameplay. Both designs are the same Sonic the Hedgehog that we all love and recognize, so if you can't stand one of them, then how can you be a Sonic fan? Love Sonic for who he is, not fight over his design.

<_> Am I the only one whom doesn't think Sonic changed /THAT/ much? He GREW TALLER and got green eyes.

No, you are not the only one.

Oh, and his spikes got longer too. But other then that, not much was changed.

There are many pop culture icons and the like that have kept the same appearances (Or, mostly) for generations. Just look at Superman, or Batman, even the Simpsons have barely changed at all since their debut.

I think Sonic has changed less than The Simpsons, lul. WAAAAAAAAY less. Just got taller, lost some weight, put in green contacts and grew out his 'hair'. xD Also

Batman, too O:

I honestly don´t care about minor changes in his design, and I never will.

He´s still a blue bipedal hedgehog with red shoes that runs really, really fast.

I don't have a problem with his classic portrayal in Generations, it's the current modern design since '07 that bothers me. I just want sonic to look cool again.

People hate the Modern design because they don't like the Modern games. They like the Classic design...because they liked the Classic games. It's nostalgia filter, guys. it's pretty simple. It's the same reason people like Sonic's friends...when they are Knuckles, Tails, Blaze or even Amy. And yet they hate Sonic's friends that consist of Silver, Shadow(kind of), Big and others. The first group of friends were in good games. The second group of friends had roles in lesser moments of Sonic's history.

It all boils down to the quality of the games, but unfortunately not everyone is eloquent or even has the desire to point out what he or she really dislikes about a game. So, instead of dissecting the game...they just complain about it's surface representation. This is annoying, because characters like Shadow and Mephiles can be cool even if they starred in bad games. The characters aren't bad because the game is. Sonic '06 sucked because of awful execution in terms of gameplay. Not because of Silver or anyone else. Not because Sonic had a terrible lanky design.

I'm rambling, though. tl;dr. Modern Sonic's design will be appreciated when Modern Sonic's games are appreciated.

I like the Modern design, post Unleashed. He looks a lot like Classic does, just older. I hated the '06 design, not because of the game's quality. It was just...stiff and awkward looking. I think a lot of modern detractors don't even know the model changed, they still think of lanky Sonic.

HAHAHA, no.

I dislike it because I can't stand the long quills on Sonic and want them short. I also don't like the crease in his brow that's always there.

Sonic is still Sonic, but that doesn't mean everyone has to like the design. Complaining about baw green eyes is admittedly silly, and I'm not expecting him to change back. That doesn't mean I have to think it's epic cool.

I don't have a problem with either designs. Classic is cute, Modern looks more like a teenager without looking awkward like his 15th anniversary model.

But I still prefer SA2 Sonic, if you ask me tongue.png

I just tell myself that he got older, and therefore got taller, he also started working out and eating less, also when he started trying to attack trees they had to give him some contacts which just happened to be green.

It makes my life so much simpler. :)

I had never heard a single design complaint until Aknotholeresident or whoever it was opened his big fat mouth in front of everyone on youtube about sonic 4.

The only other person i know of who complains about that shit is mariotehplumber. And we all know he's an idiot so he doesn't count.

Lots of characters have redisigns, the looney tunes, and mickey mouse went through a slight redisigne, mario characters. Slight redisigns are fine, major redisignes are a different story, sonics redisign is fine, Mario went through a similar redisign in his transition from 2d to 3d.

Sonic generations wouldn't have meant this much to me if it weren't for classic sonic's comeback. I think with his absence and gameplay this game woulda been pretty shit to me.

Say what you want, ridicule the fact someone values the design of a character they're fan of (because that is so weird right?) but as a fan of a franchise it's perfectly fine to value the design of a said character. For me that had never been or became modern sonic's design. I have no issue with his existence but I disagree with the remark that they are the same character, because they are not to me. The difference between both is enough for me to not like modern sonic. It's not just the design with him being taller and having overly exagurated huge quills, but also his personality is not to my liking.

Saying stuff like this would have been hard before generations, because it would come off more as offending to someone but honestly the state of the franchise feels very right to me. I can now finally prefer classic sonic without getting remarks thrown at me asking me to move on or whatever. I have a place in the fanbase again and we can finally get along SIDE BY SIDE even though our disagreement. I can finally be just as excited as anyone (except for the dreamcas adventure fans (sorryguys))

Every trailer gets me more excited ONLY because of classic sonic's gameplay and that wouldn't have been the case if they didn't decide to bring back his old design because to me the design plays just as much factor as the gameplay. Weird? Not really if you ask me. We are after all fans of the character.

To me, they softened up all his good features. His brows which were the most defining features for his facial animation has been softened. His muzzle barely has any curves and is bigger. And the white part of his eye area has been reduced in width. I just find his post Unleashed design visually boring. I don't see any coolness in him anymore. Honestly everytime I see a new game with that design I get angry. It hasn't grown on me at all.

It's the same with Tails.

I guess that's the reason why I like the Unleashed model cause Sonic looks pretty tamed and SEGA had toned him down a lot. Before his model or his artwork looks too 'extreme' especially his Riders design.

Then there are the "modern" Sonic fans, who are not familiar with the classic games as they are with the modern ones.

There are modern fans of Sonic that still plays and appreciate the classics, just saying.

Also the "Porcupine Man" comment, I've noticed that the critics and classics fans keeps throwing lame insults at the current design of Sonic. Asshole Sonic, Imposter Sonic, Fake Sonic, Ugly Sonic, Anorexic Sonic, etc. It's just show their immaturity. Does it hurt so much to just call him Sonic? -_- How will they like it if the dreamcast or modern fans insults classic Sonic? They won't like that at all. As a fan who love and grew up with both designs I find that to be pretty insulting.

Good to see someone who understands. Seriously, those people who insult the modern side of Sonic need to get a life.

Good lord, what Aptiva said times a million.

Sonic got older. He got taller. His spines grew some. His fur got darker. His irises got greener. He hit puberty which made blue fur grow on his eyelids. Big whoop.

I can see the reasoning of liking classic Sonic in design, even maybe moreso than the current.. but 'real' and 'fake' Sonic? 'Mr. Gangly Porcupine Man?' Really? Sonic is Sonic is Sonic is Sonic is Sonic. There's no way around it. Same personality, same motives, same abilities, and pretty much the same design with some minor changes.

There are things I like about both designs. Classic Sonic is cute, simple, but effective, I love how he shows off his expressions. Hes like a character from a mickey mouse cartoon, I love it.

Modern Sonic is cool, edgy, and has an additude, though it wasn't until recently that I got to appreciate it a lot more.

I love both, great to see them back in Generatoins.
