Is the tone of Colors really that bad?

I mean, Sonic plots have never exactly been memorable, even the Adventure ones, and unless you're a diehard fan, they're forgettable at best. Now here comes Colors with its completely nonsensical tone..and people like it, love it even...so...what's the problem? I mean yeah it has bad jokes, but people don't seem to care about that all that much, while whenever the series tries to take itself seriously it either fails or is largely ignored.

So is the Colors direction all that bad.

No I don't fine it "bad" I just find the tone of the game to be a little too simple. I see people praise the game for being simple with little plot and no 'shitty' characters while I see others criticized it for that same reason.

No, I still don't think it's bad. I like the Saturday Morning tone of Colors, I'm just hoping that the new writers will tone down on the jokes in the next game and they're probably on the boards reading all the criticism on the jokes (one of the writers even signed up here) and maybe Generations won't have so many of them. That's the only downside to the tone of Colors I can think of. Oh yeah, and the lack of characters.

All three game go to far in one direction. Shadow and 06 being grimdark and featuring lots of character while Colors is very (too) light hearted and having few characters. That said however I enjoyed Color's story more than the other two because, with the exception of a few bad jokes, its tone didn't feel akward or forced.

^^^Yeah, Sonic & Tails felt right at home in Colors, while games like Shadow and 06 it feels so out of place and stupid, hell even the Adventure games have their stupid moments when it comes to their plots.

Then there's the Archie comics which is basically a love story with furries at this point.

Even though colors was nothing more than a light hearted Saturday cartoon in a video game, I thought it was decent.....once I got use to it. I mean yeah the jokes were pretty....eh at times but it did have it's moment. (BBBE) And I can actually see sonic like that. Just having fun while kicking ass and making random jokes about the enemy/robot he defeated. As long as we don't get any Sonic kissing human scene ever again I'll be a happy fan.

It's not outright terrible like '06 or ShtH, but there are some very real problems with it. Too many of the jokes feel forced, and rather than just writing a simpler/lighter story, they neglect the plot (so there's more time to tell jokes). The story would've been better if they cut out about half the jokes to put more focus on Eggman's plan and actually explained what happened to Yacker in the second half.

Colors' story shouldn't provoke a "kill it with fire" response, but it definitely needs work.

The tone's direction wasn't terrible at all. The issue is the execution. The story was actually complex, but because Colors Wii was intended to be a pick-up-and-go game, there was a lot going on, and the minimal writing made the pace way too jarringly fast. The other was the humor. Unleashed and Black Knight's humor was natural and came when appropriate, the former being rather lighthearted. With the exception of the antagonists, the humor in SCWii was forced-fed to keep the tone light. The storytelling would've been much better if the plot was much simpler (or had more cutscenes to slow down the flow) as well as more naturally flowing humor (including actually GOOD characterization, but I've ranted this enough already).

It's like baseball, where a team's momentum's as good as your next starting pitcher. In storywriting, it's as good as your next script. It's not about the tone, but the execution of the tone. Sonic 3 & Knuckles was an excellent serious story, and the same can be said with Sonic Adventure 2 and Black Knight. Adventure's story was a balance of lighthearted and serious, but it was very well-done. Unleashed's lighthearted story is by far one of the best in the series. Sonic Next-Gen had the making to be a GREAT story, but it was rushed before it had the chance to be polished. That's why there are so many holes in it. Heroes's lighthearted story was WAY too minimal, yet had problem-solving issues and forced-fed humor to keep the tone cheery.

Keep the tone natural, and allow it to flow while keeping the characters in-character and the situations sensible, and I'm happy. :)

Sonic Colors is one of the worst games plot-wise along with heroes (but I like heroes' plot more, I think it's better). So, yes, it's that bad. Wanna some lighthearted tone? Storybook series is what you're looking for.

That brings up my next thing. What the hell happened to him? He disappeared with no explanation.
Judging from the DS version, he was looking for his mother. Aside from just Colors' storytelling style, I think the end of the game got hacked up a bit...

Oh look, another "why you guys hate Colors" thread, this game gets alot of these. I predict this to get ugly by page 4 and last until page 7 when everyone's beaten and bloody and the Unleashed side's had some 'sense' blasted into them that colors was better in every single way possible. And as usual I'll be the lurker with the pawpkorn...unless I feel like doing battle.

But yeah, I've said it before, but they should combine Unleashed's tone with Colors' writing style for the dialog.

Basically cut down on the jokes, so that when there is a joke, it catches you off guard and it's more funny.

There's nothing wrong with Colors' tone sans the relative 180 it does at the end which feels tacked on and anticlimatic. At the same time though, it was the vehicle necessary for more fun characterization of the cast and I appreciate that immensely. But overall, I don't mind the series taking itself seriously either when done sensibly ala Unleashed, SA1, and even the Storybook games. The melodramatic delegation of anything within that range of atmosphere and tone as "too serious" by people unwilling to suspend their disbelief that much is the bigger problem the storytelling faces.

IMO the Adventures' stupid lines are from the terrible acting. Also another thing I'd like to add are the tones of thecharacter interactions. All of their interactions felt perfectly natural (finally in a main series game). We definitely need more of that.

I'm talking about tone dude, not the plot itself, I know Colors` plot was.....iffy at best, I'm talking about the overall sillier, wacky tone present.

Its really more of a "Do you like the direction the series has taken" thread. If there's bitching I will hunt it down and kill it like the cancer it is.

Well, in that case, I love the direction the series has taken, I just like, want it to be done with better execution and some balance of lightheartedness and action packed-edness.

Like I said before, a whole game like Unleashed's opening, full of explosions and grandness, but never really feeling too dark, would be awesome.

You know what that actually sounds like a legit tone for Sonic, rather than focus all of the over the topness into jokes that feel forced just focus it on Sonic and the rest of the cast being awesome, I mean how much more awesome Colors would've been if Sonic finished off every boss in such a ludicrous way then spouting some one liner?

Yeah, most of the humor in Colors feels really forced, well at least Sonic's anyway, Eggman's comes natural and therefore is better with Sonic...ehh, there's also the fact that it doesn't try to tell a story, I understand there's less emphasis on plot but still.

I think a better question would be, should there less of a focus on the plot?

I think that one of the main reasons the final boss felt anticlimatic was because there was no build up. In Unleashed you knew from the start that you would fight Dark Gaia so when the tone started to darken it didn't feel forced IMO.

@Inferno I want a scene to surpass Unleashed's opening scene. Just one and I can die happily.

That's one problem with the final boss. The other is that it's deceivingly easy. I had a harder time with the Aquatic Park boss than I did with Egg Nega Wisp, even more so once I figured out just how broken it really is. Secondly, Terminal Velocity and its unwinnable end is a great concept not given the expansion and length it deserved. To be honest, I think I'd be much easier on the finale if there was some semblance of difficulty present.

Colours definitely had some story problems (although I think any comparison to Heroes is seriously unfair), but there really wasn't anything wrong with its tone. I don't think every Sonic game should aim for the same level of lightheartedness, but it'd be nice to get a smaller-scale, more fun and upbeat game like Colours every once in a while to keep the darker stories from feeling stale.

...that said, Colours might have benefitted from a slightly darker tone insofar as it really should have gone into greater depth about what was going on with the Wisps and their enslavement, and that obviously would've necessitated a couple of slightly sad cutscenes. There's nothing wrong with Colours' tone on its face, but it chose a really odd story to apply that tone to, if that makes sense.

Its really more that since there was barely any focus on the plot at all, that the final boss didn't really have that climactic feeling.

I mean in Unleashed the plot is fairly straightforward, and despite its light tone, is mostly plot orientated.

Colors is just as straightforward as Unleashed, but so much focus went into the humor that it forgot it was supposed to be telling a story.

As far as im concerned, there is a right way to do simple lightearted stories (Colors, while its not perfect), and a hilariously wrong way at doing simple lighthearted stores (heres looking at you Sonic Heroes).

I wouldn't mind if they put more meat on the story of Sonic however, thankfully Generations seems to be doing just that and finding the right balance between serious and lighthearted

Then there's the Archie comics which is basically a love story with furries at this point.

Overgeneralizing much?

I did think the boss was to easy, but they could have shown a silhouette of it being built just something foreshadowing.

One must wonder why the writers for Sonic Games do not take examples from other cartoony games/shows and make it more Sonicy instead of flinging out plots that tend to be nothing but extremes in seriousness and edginess or overly light hearted and not very funny?

Hell even take it from an animated movie or something like Kung Fu Panda, at least theres comedy with a quirky style to it, as well as the kicking of ass.
