I mean when you think about it, what else can Sega do with it? They already released Sonic 1, 2, 3 & Knuckles on XBLA so they can't remake those with it. They can't make a new game with it right now because Gimps is making Sonic 4. All I can think of at the moment is Chaotix and even then people around here seem iffy about it...

So... what now?

Me and a few others already suggested Knuckles Chaotix, other than that, I'm not too sure. Perhaps it can be used to make new games based on the classics.

They could do something smart and use it for, oh, I don't know...Sonic the Hedgehog 4?

But no. This is silly ol' SEGA!

No, re-make Sonic 4: EP 1 with the Retro engine, and call it, Sonic 4: EP 1: We're Sorry Edition.
EDIT:

If they were really sorry they'd give all the levels an overhaul in addition to adding the retro engine.

This deserves to be in my post.

Honestly, I wish they got a hold of the Retro engine earlier so Sonic 4 could've been competently made.

TIME FOR SERIOUS RESPONSE!
Seriously, they could make a new genesis-style game, but call it "Sonic Returns", or, "Sonic Neo", or something, so they don't have to conform exactly to the genesis gameplay (thy physics are already there), and actually expand on the great classic gameplay. Heck, they could even try a new graphical style! After all, they don't have to worry about physics, because they already got those.

I'd forgive SEGA completely for Sonic 4 Episode 1 if the game was remade with the Retro engine. I don't necessarily think that Genesis-style graphics were the way to approach S4, but they sure as Hell would have been better than what we were given.

Just let Taxman go nuts.

This is the only correct solution and happens to require almost no effort on Sega's part

What Dio said, and moreover they don't own the engine at all. It was licensed to them for SCD. They'll need permission to use it in the future.

There's also no reason why they couldn't remake S1-K with it and release decent versions of them.

It boggles my mind how a professional team that has had over 20 years of experience with the same franchise, cannot replicate the most popular of their game engines, yet an amateur fan could.

I honestly do not understand what the problem is at Sega that they cannot just simply make a genesis Physics engine, and instead creates worse engines that do not comply to the game's requirement. Even after 3 years of work on Generations, they still couldn't get it right, and yet a Fan worked on it for a year and got it done on his first try

Are they tired or something? Are they just lazy or maybe blind? How hard can it be for a company to make a simple replication of a 16-bit engine, and not be outdone by fans. Come on Sega, Capcom could do it, Nintendo (to an extent) could do it, I'm pretty damn sure you can do it too.

The retro engine had been in development for years, if I recall.

Edit:

Here's a piece of an interview from touch arcade:

http://toucharcade.c...s-retro-engine/

Officially, the Retro Engine and RSDK have been in development since March 2008. However, the iPhone version of the engine actually only took a week to set up!

Well non-sonic games would be good too. whatever hasn't been ported can be re-done.

And who say we wouldn't buy a retro engine version of Sonic 1-3k? theres defiately money in it but its just got to be released in another way like a sonic mega collection for 360 or something.

I feel like they should have their fun with whatever direction they're taking Sonic 4, but while the Retro engine is in their hands, the least they could do (Besides remaking another game, that is) would be to come out with a "Sonic Retro" of sorts. Old school graphics, music, Retro engine, etc. Basically what Sonic 4 should have been, except done with Taxman's engine. Probably won't happen but I can dream.

Sonic 2 - The lost levels
Hidden Palace Zone
Genocide Zone (wut)
Wood Zone
Desert Zone
The cut Sonic CD level(s) Taxman was making.

Or you know, just stick with Sonic CD DLC and finish those WIP Sonic CD levels.

The question isn't what Sega can do with Taxman's Retro Engine but what Sega will do with it in the future. And considering their refusal to use it for later Sonic 4 episodes in order to "maintain consistency" with Episode 1's shit physics engine; as well as the fact that the other classic games have already been ported as downloadable titles, I think that Sega's use of the Retro Engine is a one-time deal.

Good ports of Sonic 1-K on WiiU. And Chaotix.
