No... I'm not just talking about Saban (which WAS FUNimation too). I'm talking about the FUNimation dub produced from 1999-2003. The one with the bad Faulconer score. The one with the messed up script. The one with the messed up voices. The one with the terrible acting. Yeah, that one.

Although some of the script was a tiny bit better in the Cell and Buu arcs, they still retained those problems.

I'm well aware of those edits that the CW enforced. :P Doesn't matter, though. A lesser edited version is on Nicktoons and it's available uncut on DVD and BD.

What? no, SABAN (later called the Blue Ocean dub) was handled by a different company from FUNi. Why do you think FUNi made the Uncut dubs? because they didn't own that chunk of the series until SABAN's license expired.

Just watch what your saying. That dub your snubbing has allot of fans behind it, Including myself.

Um, yeah, the "Saban episodes" WERE by FUNimation. I'm talking about the original 53 episodes. Saban was involved but it was FUNi doing the dubbing and they hired Ocean actors to do the job. Once a fallout between FUNi and Saban came along, they ditched the Ocean cast and made their first in-house cast.

I don't care if the FUNi dub has a lot of fans. It's still bad.

But then again, 4kids really jacked up KAI in the CW4kids version. Wtf, Blue Popo? and why does Gohan have a derp eye? why did they edit the dragon out the intro?! WHY IS VEGETA EATING BLUE MUSHROOMS?!?! oh and you gotta love chotzu's MAGIC HAPPY SPARKLE DEATH!!!

Just as bad as saban's edits in my opinion.

I believe that it was actually FUNi who was in charge of editing those episodes that way because S&P requested it. 4Kids only had the rights to air Kai. They couldn't actually touch the footage.

I don't like discussing licencing and editing and such so have some recent Toonami related tweets from Steven Blum and Adult Swim.

http://twitter.com/#!/adultswim/status/205404785652940800

There seems to be a good steady amount of #ToonamisBackBitches tweets. I'm really hoping the shoe gets good ratings consistently. I'd love to see Toonami get more money and flourish.

I don't feel like watching those videos as I am guessing they are complaining about the new shows and such and such and that there is no DBZ or Naruto or One Piece(Though the first one seems to want to support the new shows so we can get the old shows back if I'm reading the description right)? If not, sorry but I really don;t feel like watching those videos now.

As I said before, I like the schedule and and to be honest, I don't want the old shows back on it, one at most and not for long. I have great nostalgic memories of DBZ and such on Toonami but I want Toonami to be Toonami. By that I mean, giving not exceptionally known anime some air time like they did for the old shows like DBZ, One Piece and Naruto which we all(or most) hold a special place in our hearts because Toonami introduced it to us.

I'm glad they're giving new shows like Casshern Sins and Deadman Wonderland spotlight. Toonami's revival shouldn't really on nostalgia and it shouldn't need it. It should just go on and get new shows and air new programming and air new promos and so on. Yeah, it has some AS anime but they're on a budget and if the show lasts, new programs will be added. Jason said they were looking at thousands of shows to license. Give the show time to grow instead of bashing it because it isn't relying on Nostalgia and isn't pandering to the nostalgic viewers.

We wanted Toonami back. What is Toonami? It's certainly not a block to pander to nostalgia and memories(Though it was nice for one night). It's a block to show off some great shows and anime even if they're not that well known or popular. And we're pretty much getting that. Hell, if Wikipedia, my online research and Tvtropes are to be believed, Toonami will be the TV premiere of Deadman Wonderland's English dub. That's awesome!

I don't know about everyone else but the reason I wanted Toonami back was not for it's old shows. It was so that it could give more shows spotlight, more TOM and SARA, new professionally made bumpers, new game reviews, new life lessons and the same old style, atmosphere and characters that we loved about the show in the first place.

In short: Remember the old, carry on with the new.

----

Anyway, JasonDeMarco retweeted this.

If I may try to remind everyone to spread the word, this picture and to encourage you're online and real life friends and communities to watch Toonami this Saturday, even if they have never seen it before.

------

On even another note, I was re-reading the topic again and I saw this little gem of a post.

I'd rather they just change Adult Swim's anime block to Toonami, or reinstate some afternoon school time as a Toonami block. I don't think finding space would be an issue.

The real issue, I think, would be the programming. Toonami's shows were a solid mix of good classic action and comedic anime. Each show complimented the other, gave viewers a sampling of different genres and shows they might not have even heard about otherwise, and ultimately helped establish the block's adult and epic thematics. This was helped in part by what was popular back then in anime: gritty, action-y stuff.

Everything we watched last night was of course really good, but at the same time, how do you- or would you- sustain a permanent block off of the same anime created in the 80s and 90s, the same anime everyone's seen before already? I'm not entirely sure I would; it almost goes against what Toonami was about on some level. But then, which shows would you choose now? I honestly don't feel good imagining Toonami being host to shows in the vain of Bleach and whatever loli magical big-eyed girl panty-shot bullshit is popular now.

I think that would be the hardest thing: rounding up another solid block of anime to introduce today's young'uns to stuff that's good, but a little less mainstream than Naruto. At the same time, this may just be me showing how little new anime I care to watch anymore. xP

It's a really nice indepth post. Then I noticed Nepenthe hasn't said her thoughts on the lineup. Nepenthe, if you see this, what are your opinions on the lineup? I'm curious.

Ohnoes Toonami has new shows and not old shows ohnoes. Personally I don't give a shit about the old shows not being on Toonami, DBZ has had so many releases anyone that desperate to see the show would have found an alternative method or bought them by now... I looked forward to Tom and Sara and regain the Toonami atmosphere more than anything else and if these fuckwits ruin it for me I will unleash an unholy maelstrom of pain and suffering upon their pathetic souls. You get two new shows and some old ones whoopie, you want more support that shit, freakin' anime fans... they bitch to high heavens.

Yeah, I agree just not as blunt and aggressive. It's a solid lineup with good shows. Some decently known, some not as well known.

I'd love Tom to make a speech.

Oh and lol I wasn't being serious (never am I serious here unless its a serious topic), but the complaining about the lack of old shows we've seen countless times (and some that many of us probably own) is annoying. The only reason we had Dragonball for as long as we did was because that was a long running series DB, DBZ, and yes even DBGT gets a nod, had Dragonball only been 24 episodes long and we got stuck watching that for 10 years straight we'd be in the same position as Cowboy Bebop (tired of seeing it on tv).

People went into this thinking it was going to be like April 1st and that's not how it works. April 1st was toonami airing an episode of a single anime, not much money there... a whole series on the other hand, yeesh.

...Only One Piece isn't some old Nostalgia show, it's still coming out with new episodes to this day.

Just saying.. and stuff. .w.

I wasn't counting that one :P. I've never seen much of One Piece (I can't start in the middle of the series dudes, I have to start at the beginning and you can imagine why I'm so reluctant to do so), but since its so popular I bet that'd cost a lot for Adult Swim to license.

In all honesty, I don't expect One Piece until much later in Toonami's cycle, and even then, the show is going to need at least two slots a week in order for the audience to catch up to the better material later in the show. If Toonami came back to airing new episodes every week, then One Piece owuld be an easier gamble, but at the time, hoo boy it would be one heck of a risk.

Sorry for not noticing this before. Need to visit this topic more often. xP

Anyway, I don't think it's a bad line-up at all; rather, I think it's quite befitting of the block. As I said in the post you quoted, Toonami was about airing good, interesting, adult action anime, and this line-up is definitely in that spirit. I'm also glad that they've managed to snag two new shows that I've never heard much of. Personally, I'm mostly interested in Casshern Sins; I saw a battle from the live-action film and was highly impressed. I'm hoping the anime will be of the same caliber.

All in all, I'm totally on board. I'll be watching and doing my part. :3

Here's your link; former Funimation producer Barry Watson describing how he edits the original DBZ dub in 1996.

Well, yeah we can agree on that, but what does that have to do with not caring if the original Funimation dub does not air?

Anyways, I think I've derailed this topic enough, I'm not responding to these posts anymore.

Okay. This article explains it well:

Scroll down to "DragonBall Z Begins in the US."

And yeah, that's a bad one, but the Malaysian dub has the worst voice acting...

Interesting...Seems I was misled. Excuse me while I punch an old friend in the face for misleading me.

Yeah we really derailed here Pelly would choke us if she saw all this, I'm done. but glad we can agree that there is a tier below FUNis old dub thats considered true bad.

Adult Swim tweeted this, saying Two more days until #ToonamisBackBitches.

http://twitter.com/#...871191280455680

Also, remember Jason said Peter Cullen is to busy to do promos? Guess who is doing them now. TOM. You know, I can live with that. From one amazing voice to another. Though, if Jason's response means anything, I wouldn't rule out them trying to get Peter back when he's less busy and they have more money(WATCH TOONAMI EVERY SATURDAY!).

http://twitter.com/#...904953145966593

And they're still getting new stuff for music for Toonami.

http://twitter.com/#...911168181743617

Oh and hey, since this was originally made as an appreciation thread, have a little nostalgia.

Here is a bump concept I made for Toonami & [adult swim]. Ya know the music they play in the promos and stuff, or on [adult swim] during their captions? yep. haha take a listen if you want. I sampled The Isley Brothers, the announcer from the Gundam Wing Promo and put in some Yu Yu Hakusho Clips in there along with some 90's samples and stuff.
