Should they have made a "Saturn" Era?

Looking back at Sonic's history, there are actually 4 Eras instead of 3.

Genesis/Mega Drive Era (June 23, 1991-November 21, 1994)

-is basically Sonic the Hedgehog to Sonic Triple Trouble

-includes some Game Gear Games

Saturn Era (November 22, 1994-November 26, 1998)

-is basically every game that debuted after Sonic Triple Trouble to before Sonic Adventure

-includes some Game Gear Games

Dreamcast Era (November 27, 1998-November 21, 2005)

-is basically Sonic Adventure to Shadow the Hedgehog

-includes Sonic Pocket Adventure and the GBA Sonic games

Modern Era (November 22, 2005-November 11, 2010)

-is basically Sonic Riders to Sonic Colors Wii

-is different for handhelds, which starts earlier. (Sonic Rush-Sonic Colors DS)

If there was a Saturn Era, Classic Sonic would have an equal number of levels, rivals, and bosses with Modern Sonic. The only downside is that most of the games from this Era were Spinoffs and include some games like Sonic Labyrinth, Sonic R, and Sonic 3D Blast, which some people and even some fans don't like.

Do you think there should have been a Saturn Era?

Nah, I think the musical references and stuff were enough. I mean of course yes I would have loved more levels, but having stuff like Radical City, Diamond Dust and... uhh... Sonic World? ...Would be quite offensive when we could have had stages from Sonic 3, Shadow or Secret Rings instead.

I do agree Classic should have got more screentime though, at least with regards to bosses and special stages (on 3DS).

No.

The eras in Generations were based on the main series games, and the Saturn had none of those.

Maybe stages based on Sonic R or 3D Blast could be fun little bits of DLC, but nothing more. Regarding Sonic R though... we've got Resort Island which would similar to Seaside Hill/Emerald Coast, Radical City which is OMGANOTHERCITY, Regal Ruin could be said to be a bit like Sky Sanctuary... yeah, I think it's fair to say that turning racetracks into full-blown stages wouldn't work. Radiant Emerald might be cool though.

As Jez says, I'd much rather see stages from Sonic 3 or Secret Rings. Gimme mah Hydrocity and Night Palace! D:<

Oh, having said that, if we did get DLC (lol), it'd actually be pretty cool to get Radiant Emerald as a mini-game type stage like Casino Night. Dunno how Classic would play (ironically considering the ORIGINAL was 3D and Classic Sonic), but Modern could have a racetrack-esque stage like Savannah Citadel Act 2/Cool Edge Act 3 in Unleashed.

Plus, they wouldn't need to make new music, can just use Super Sonic Racing.

Classic needed more screen time, particularly with bosses, but I don't think a Saturn era would have been a good way of doing it. There's no main series game, and there's pretty much nothing iconic that wasn't already used (music). Could have had an extra Mega Drive era level or two (Sonic 3 rep? :/).

The Saturn games aren't particularly recognizable to people who aren't major fans. Also, as much as I would have loved more stages, adding another era is sort of unrealistic.

There simply wasn't enough development time to produce another 3 zones; in fact, there was barely time to finish the 9 they had if the glitches are anything to go by.

Also, SG360 is about 7.4GB from what I understand. Divide that figure by 3 and you get 2.4. That means on average each era takes up 2.4 GB. By adding another one, SG's total size increases to 9.6GB and you've just sailed over the usable space of an XBOX 360 disc.

A Saturn Era or any other additional set of levels simply wasn't feasible because of time and technical restrictions.

I don't think the Saturn really had enough noteworthy Sonic games to really warrant its own era, personally.

Besides, Generations has only counted main-series home consoles Sonic games; of which the Saturn had none. 3D and R were both spin-offs, and Jam hardly counts as a compilation.

I'm pretty sure the majority of the gaming community out there don't even know/remember the Saturn, and the people that actually do don't give two shits about it anyways. It would be pointless to put in an era that hardly anybody cares about.

I thought it would be kinda cool if we got a stage from Sonic X-Treme as sort of a way of giving us an idea of what the game would look like if it was ever finished.

Come on, admit it, you know you'd all love if they had made a level out of Canyon Cruise from Sonic the Fighters.

They should have made an "Odd" Era, with levels from: Knuckles' Chaotix, Sonic 3D Blast, Sonic the Fighters, Sonic R, Sonic Shuffle, Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic Storybook (Act 1 Secret Rings, Act 2 Black Knight)...

I mention this era before.

Wacky Workbench-Sonic CD

Marina Madness-Knuckles' Chaotix

Rusty Ruins-Sonic 3D Blast

Rival boss: Metal Sonic (If Classic Knuckles was in the game being the Genesis Era rival and ally.)

Saturn Era Boss: Final Fight-Sonic 3D Blast

Generations should have had an HD remake of Jam's Sonic World within white space.

It would've been nice to have seen more music from the Saturn games or challenges loosely based on those titles, but a Saturn era would've been pushing it.

Why bother? The Saturn isn't exactly the most fondly remembered system, and Sonic's games from that era are practically obscure to everyone outside the fanbase. Unless you bought the Gems collection, odds are you've never even played Sonic R or Sonic the Fighters. That, and they weren't really that memorable anyways. You know how the gaming community at large regards the last several years of Sonic games as the worst years of the franchise? Well, I'd argue that the series true dark ages were from 1995 to 1998. And 2006.

A better question should be should they have made an "Advanced" era for the 3ds

Yes, yes, and yes. That those games didn't get recognized beyond a few music tracks baffles me. I would have loved to have seen Music Plant get a remake.

I think there should have been a post dream cast era for games like Sonic Spinball, 3D Blast, and Chaotix.

And yeah there should have been an advanced era for 3DS. Actually the 3DS should have been about the handheld games in the series.
