Leading up to the release of SEGA's Sonic Generations, a number of trailers appeared showing various CG footage. We assumed that all of these elements would combine to be the game's CG intro, however when the game released the only CG featured was the initial teaser footage of classic and modern meeting in Green Hill. I've combined all the CG elements that I know of into an extended "lost" intro. Enjoy!

Update: Added ArtFenix's bits to a new version. The new bits are lower res, and have logos over one portion, but they do complete the Rooftop Run scene. Thanks ArtFenix!

First version:

There are a few minor niggles. The Rooftop Run bit is a little choppy, if anybody knows of other trailers showing a seamless version of this scene let me know. The classic Sonic Egg Fighter bop is a little choppy. Also, it jumps ahead when they exit the building and meet both Tails.

I also wonder if additional fully colored Green Hill clips exist. The launch trailer only showed the two seen at the end.

You're missing the CGI of Rooftop Run which was only seen at the 20th Anniversary Tokyo Game Show Sonic event.

Too bad this is the only footage of it.

I'm most curious about the Time Eater in GHZ part. Was that ever going to be used ingame? Was there more story, with this part being of the bits? So many questions, so little answers that don't amount to fanwank and guesswork.

Thanks! I thought I saw more somewhere:

Unfortunately thats all I've ever seen of that footage. Shame that bit of classic running off to the side and the extended classic and modern Sonic and Tails bit isn't in any of the video's I've seen.

We really should push SEGA to release all the footage. The game is out and done, I doubt there is any reason they're holding off on releasing all the footage.

Nice job editing these clips together!

THIS is what the intro movie should have been. I mean... they had the CGI... so why didn't they use it for the game? I don't mean in cutscenes, but rather for an intro. Like Neon pointed out, there was a bit of the Sonics running in Spagonia that was only seen at TGS. What's the point of making CGI movies if you aren't gonna show them? Hell, even the trailers we got didn't have the full clips. Something doesn't sit right with me... and I'm almost convinced this stuff actually was cut from the game for whatever reason. Has SEGA ever been contacted about this?

Ah I wondered when someone would get around to do this. As already mentioned, there was some 'complete' clips in the concert, not sure if there might have been some for the Gamescom/E3 trailers too.

But when you put it together like that, it does seem that theres a lot of stuff which has never been released, the Time Eater clip for instance just seems totally random as to how it begins and ends like that.

You know, given the fact that both Green Hill and Rooftop Run have extended CGI footage which was scarcely seen... maybe there's some City Escape CGI that we're missing, too.

Note how well the City Escape scene transitions to Rooftop Run. There must have been some full cut made, though I still don't get why it wasn't ever released.

Next Q&A with Aaron, this should be asked demanded.

I actually have some more cuts. Like those from TGS. Not in HD quality, but not a cam rip either.

What are the clips?

I'm DLing all the 20th anniversary docs from the SEGA Press site to see if they have any chestnuts.

Those missing clips from Rooftop Run and a couple of seconds with Time Eater appearing. OK some screens wouldn't hurt, would they?

And yeah, we really need to make Sega share all CG stuff from generations with us.
Oh, and don't waste your time downloading stuff from Sega-press. They don't have any more clips than those in your video.

Nice! Thanks! If it isn't a hassle, could you zip and upload those clips to megaupload? I wouldn't mind having the clips.

Is there not footage of it in the launch trailer?

I was actually in the process of doing this months ago, but then I got frustrated and gave up when nothing would "fit" music-wise, as there was no main theme. Looks like you went for live and learn though, which I considered, but then I was like: "everyone's probably used this in their Generations videos by now." But yeah, great job.

I actually integrated the footage from ArtFenix's file and made an extended version, uploading to YouTube now, should have it up in a bit.

I don't want to sound stupid, but I think one of the reasons sega didn't put all those cgi's was because of space.

I thought of this when I installed my game on the xbox and realized it occupied 7.4 gigabytes, that's almost the space of the dvd(and way more than unleashed or 06).Maybe Sega to keep consistency in the all HD versions of the game, remove those bits of story from the game.I know that in game cut scenes don't occupy that much space but cgi cutscenes must occupy a lot more space. This would also explain the number of cutscenes that appeared on the demo, they where originally planned for the game but to save space they have to remove a little part of the story.

At least that's what I think.

Yes, I know that. I think they increased the size to 7.6 gigas.
