Introducing....

Posted Image

Summer of Sonic 2012 has been announced! Taking place on Saturday the 7th of July in London, UK.

Quote Taken from the SEGA Blog

This will be the fifth anniversary of Summer of Sonic – and we’re determined to make it the biggest and best show yet! SoS is an all-day event that celebrates all aspects of the Sonic franchise. ‘Zoned’ areas offer a range of different activities – budding artists can sit down at the fan art tables and compete in competitions, speed runners can challenge each other at the retro gaming pods, and the latest Sonic titles are available for fans to try before they’re even released.

So is everyone looking forward to this years Summer of Sonic?

Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. I've already started looking up potential train-times (bookings only go as far as April, booo). I'm hoping this year now that I only live an hour and a half away from London, I'll be able to attend any breakfasts or after-parties that may or may not be goin' on.

I was a lot less shy last year than I was in 2010, so I hope that trend continues. I also hope for a better "JezMM" t-shirt this year, lol.

Are you saying their's a technique for becoming less shy? I need me some of that.

I would so like to go this year...I'd hoped I could finish my Sonic all cast picture ("The Ultimate (Sonic) FanArt") before SoS too.

Only way to get over shyness is to get out there and talk to people. And no better way to do that than with a load of like-minded people all in the same place. If you want to make a whole day of it (there's people that only come for an hour or two, which I think is pretty lame), I'm sure you'll have a great time.

I'll be there, but then you already knew that.

What bmn said. Just make sure you are as recognisable as possible (advertise what you're gonna wear etc in the appropriate topic(s), or your avatar/signature, that's my plan), and the less shy people are bound to approach you and get you comfortable with approaching others.

I don't think I've ever seen a single person at SoS who looked 100% non-approachable or "I am just here because I love Sonic and do not wish to be involved in the community at all"...ish.

...Apart from the bored parents on the art tables. Hurr.

As bmn said, you just need to get out there and say hi to people. I hardly knew anybody at 2009 and spent most of the day wandering around aimlessly, yet the next year I just got to know a load more people and had a lot more fun as a result.

I've been to every SOS sans the 2009 one and let me just say that the atmosphere there is like no other. I was initially extremely nervous and couldn't even eat breakfast because of that butterfly feeling in my stomach but once I entered? That feeling melted away because people were so friendly and I had that feeling that there was a sense of rapport there given there were such vivid outpourings of love for the series.

Go and break the ice with people, I am certain that they'll be welcoming and friendly :)

I really want to go, but I don't have the boldness to go alone. I know only one person I'd be able to go with who is as hardcore a fan as me (and that's shaky at best), and he's not even a member here. I've asked him anyway though :P this sounds like a riot.

They're just much more involved now. They've not taken the helms at all.

Even if you have to go alone, I'd recommend it. There's a load of us who'll be there, and there's always the chance for meetups and what not with members of the SSMB or other sites. Seriously, it's worth it :)

I could get my 13-years old cousin there! He is as hardcore Sonicd fan as me.

But I am not sure if I'll be able to go. I will need to begin planning now cause plane to London is pretty expensive (and I cant go by car or train cause I wont make it in time because of school). But if Crush 40 is there (and I think they will since they were on Sonic Boom last year and this is 5th Aniversary of SoS) then I WILL BE THERE with my Cousin. No matter what!

SoS is a collaboration between Sega and what we call the Community team (which, for the most part, is staff of TSS, Sonic Wrecks, and recently Emerald Coast Comics and RadioSEGA). In '08 SoS was a Community operation with last-minute support from Sega thanks to AAUK. Since then Sega have taken more of a hand (which you'd expect since they're now bankrolling most of it...) - they produce a lot of the promo materials (including the logo since '09), t-shirts, some of the videos etc - but they're very supportive of our vision for the event, even if we have to jump through way more hoops now.

Sonic Boom is really a quite different event - more along the lines of an evening's entertainment as part of a bigger event (E3, SDCC) - due to it being very much a Sega project. Our beginnings as a fan meetup, the heavy fan involvement, and the gradual growth of the event over the last 5 years, means that SoS is less professional and more a grass-roots sort of thing.

Cannot wait, as per usual! Really digging the new logo too!

I'll probably book a hotel again this year, the after-party was an absolute blast last year!

I need to look into booking a hotel, but because of some things going on at work the liklihood is that I'm going to have to wait until June before doing so...

Hostel it is then D:

I'm really wanting to go this year... I'm really quite shy/quiet like people have already mentioned, but when I get to know people etc, I'm the complete opposite :)!

Never been to a SoS before, and I'm only 9 hours on a bus from London so really hoping to make it this year :)
