One major change to Unleashed that could have changed many's opinions on it...

What sense does it make for Sonic to have a lasso.
Hedgehogs are blue and run at the speed of sound? The fuck is this shit!

But seriously, I don't think it makes much sense. The stretchy arms make more sense then that.

From the part that actually feels like he's been Unleashed free into the world instead of chained and strapped to weights?
I'm pretty sure that's not why they called it Sonic Unleashed.

A you can do a lot of momentum based stuff with a lasso.

And the plot could have easily been modified to leave out the Werehog. It could still contain most of the plot elements containing Dark Gaia and Chip, but Sonic could have been given some other, not-so-noticeable curse, like his flame in Secret Rings. Except, you know, this curse would be some crazy Dark Gaia stuff rather than from an evil genie. And the game could have been easily called Sonic World Adventure like in Japan rather than Sonic Unleashed, to get rid of the "Oh but Unleashed is a reference to the Werehog" argument.
It's amazing how erasable some gimmicks are from games.

how else does Sonic swing from poles like the werehog? his arms do not extend so he is reduced to the semi automated pole swinging from SA2 City Escape. Also in my perfect Unleashed Sonic would have a run button just like the werehog and instead of a health bar it would be the usual rings, Super Sonic would be playable after completing the game and he would have the accursed boost and be able to fly. I would love to fly in between skyscrapers in Empire City night. What sense does it make for Sonic to have a lasso.

In fact, the public eye wouldn't have been nearly as negative (if at all) about this game. I doubt having Sonic's sidekick fly through brief high-speed rail shooters that progresses story would've been taken worse than Sonic undergoing lycanthropy for nearly no reason while going through slow and lengthy brawler gameplay.*
Plus, that means they could've made more extensive "act two" stages for Sonic as well, instead of wasting time on the Werehog, and making super short alternate daytime acts.

Why is Sonic swinging from poles like the werehog? If you want Sonic to swing from a rope, put ropes in the levels, because Sonic isn't the type of character to bring his own.how else does Sonic swing from poles like the werehog?

You're making the assumption that the rope wouldn't be a character in itself that would have deep conflicting feelings if Sonic were not to bring him along, by Sonic logic that it's ludicrous to assume otherwise. Clint Eastwood could do a pretty good talking rope if you ask me.Why is Sonic swinging from poles like the werehog? I really loved the aesthetics of the Tornado levels so I can see the appeal for sure (I liked the gameplay too but I'll keep that one shush because I know it's nowhere near a universal opinion).
But it'd have to be a SERIOUSLY good Starfox clone. SA1's Sky Chase was sooooo tedious and half-baked.

I'm pretty sure that's not why they called it Sonic Unleashed.
I see it both ways, as some of the developers of the game said that they always felt that Sonic was tied down in past games and wanted to unleash his true speed, letting him go faster than he ever has.
