So this topic is about discussing potential gimmicks you'd like to see the series attempt. Could be alternate gameplay, a Colors-style gimmick, anything.

Myself, i'd love to see elemental powers as a gimmick. Basically expand upon the gameplay with some sort of elemental powers, ala the Wisps in that way. Different characters could have different elemental powers (in my mind, Sonic: Wind, Knuckles: Earth ,Tails: Water and Shadow: Fire) that grant them access to different areas of the level. Since the characters already have lots of abilities that grant alternate pathways and so the levels don't get too big, each character will have their own story ala SA1, with levels designed around their core abilities (Like Tail's flight or Knuckles's gliding), and the elemental powers, acting more like, again, the Wisps as in a cool powerup that granted access to different areas of the stage. Not sure how exactly the elemental powers could be used to be a wisp-like expand-upon-base-gameplay gimmick, (except I know it would be limited to a gauge that's filled by something instead of capsule powerups) any ideas?


As for the story, I guess there could be some bracelets of power that each character finds that grants them said elemental power, and maybe Eggman harnesses some dark elemental energy for some plan or something and Sonic and Co have to stop him with the help of their new found abilities.

Badnik Control.

With the shit load of Banikis, Egg Pawns, and Egg Mechs that Eggman has lying around I would like to see a game where a you could take control of badniks using their various abilities to solve puzzles and fight enemies and whatnot, I suggested this be done Emerl/Gemerl due to his ability to copy an enemies an meld with various machines, I think that would be cool.

I could see a nod on friction physics being used for the badniks to use. Like, if Sonic uses his Boost for too long, or too much over a period of time, the heat generated from his boost-infused feet hitting the earth could serve as a signature for his location, where Eggman could warp some souped-up robots to Sonic's location and attack Sonic and slow him down, or utterly decimate the terrain around him, forcing Sonic to go on another, slower, longer path. That way, the Boost would remain in the gameplay, but would encourage conservative use of the ability so that it's not used as a one-hit kill option all the time.

I'd like to see the time travel gimmick from CD make a return only implemented a little better. I would ditch the time travel post since they were annoying as hell and making it a meter you have to fill up and once you get to a certain speed you can go to a different part in time, whether it be past or present depending on how long you hold the time button or something. I think that could be fun

Parkour cranked up to 11.

The recent games have granted Sonic a pretty good foothold in this field. Between wall running and pole swinging, Sonic’s got this stuff pretty much down. However, as a platformer, Sonic’s main goal is to move from point A to B… or move from point A to B as fast as possible. I’d like to see a game gimmick where style points come into play.

Not just maneuvering Sonic through the stage at breakneck speeds, but also angling him just right to launch him into a combo of moves down the next bank. Instead of rolling down an incline, use a badnik as a surf board. Reward creative thinking and cleaver tactics with big bonuses. Congratulate the player for going to the most unnecessary lengths during a stage. Basically make the world the playground that Sonic often makes it out to be. Trick systems would only scratch the surface.

I think that would be boss gimmick to explore once or twice.

I'd like to see the teamwork gimmick back but but without all of the monotony and hand-holding like last time. My differences would be to nix classes and directional signs entirely. Have a small core cast, each character outfitted with a unique ability or two as well as a shared set a maneuvers that'll allow anyone to get through a stage; multi-tiered levels with major branches are then practically a necessity. Allow characters to be left at places, recalled, and on a basic level combine their maneuvers as one pleases. Let the players choose who they take along and reflect the in-game narrative as necessary.

Heroes or Advance 3 Teamwork implemented in 3D but expanded upon, Sonic the Hedgehog 3D Land, and the return of Emerl so he can be implemented some way, what the heck happened to him anyway?

Oh, I have one that would be absolutely awesomely awesome!

What if you had certain sections of the levels where Sonic is chasing from or running away from something and he has to be constantly moving really realy fast so you can't hit anything while you're doing it not even enemies but you also have slippery controls especially when jumping because you're going so fast.

Sonic could even have a catch phrase to let the player know they're in one of those sections, something way past cool but also gives off the seriousness of the situation, like "Uh oh, gotta speed up!" or something cool like that.

Despite constantly hammering on about parkour in Sonic games, I honestly hadn't thought of this.

SA2 did something similar with bonus points for chaining homing attacks and interacting with certain gimmicks. I'd love to see something like this expanded on.

Maybe a branching path system? It wouldn't directly affect the gameplay, but I think it would be a cool addition. Since the 3D levels have been gradually evolving since Unleashed to include more hidden paths and optional routes, having hidden exits to different levels would be a good incentive for replaying levels. For instance, if it was utilized in Generations: you could play Chemical Plant and then move on to Sky Sanctuary, or you could take the hidden pathway to a different exit and go to Ice Cap instead. Maybe they could make it so that you can only access these paths by using a move that you acquire later in the game. Basically, hidden content like that would be a nice addition. Just a thought.

Not necessarily a gimmick, but I would like to see level theme progression well as see variantis of zones (a la Sonic CD) be used in the current games

Another one would be Sonic in a game with a bunch of different artstyles. Paper cut-out, drawings, anime, western, pop-up book, murals, etc.

I got one.....Make Tails and Knuckles playable again.

Seriously! Of all the things that Sonic hasn't been involved in, it's the music game craze. Should be awsome to control Sonic through vast landscapes using the Guitar Hero / Rock Band controller. I think Jun would approve of that.

No, Seriously, dance-offs. I'd love to see a spin-off title that does that. And if they could manage to fit it into a main game? I hope they don't attempt it, but if they can make it work, power to them.

I have to agree with the OP and say have the characters each control a different element, though they'd probably go with something closer to Heroes, meaning Sonic = Wind, Tails = Lightning/Electricity, Knuckles = Fire, ect. (or possibly Earth so Blaze could be Fire) Perhaps something similar to Secret Rings with all the fire abilities, but closer to Generations where the abilities are unlocked more easily instead of having to level up like an RPG. Or even better, if they managed to incorporate elemental shapeshifting, perhaps in place of super forms as the final boss. They could also borrow elements from the wisps, like giving Tails the ability to turn into a lightning bolt in a manner similar to the laser wisp, Knuckles to fly around while on fire like the burst wisp, and Sonic could either do a tornado to suck in enemies like the green gem from 06/void wisp, or say, manipulate the wind beneath him to fly like the hover wisp/Charmy's co-op mission in Generations.
You know, this could actually work. It would incorporate alternate gameplay styles without branching from the main gameplay too much, it would fit with the theme of the gimmicks, and it could possibly work as another storybook game (perhaps some sort of alchemy or something where they study earth, wind, water, and fire as the elements.) Not only that, but they could always make the alternate characters work similar to Black Knight, so you only have to play as Sonic, but for other elements/abilities/skillsets you could play as a few other characters. (preferably Tails, Knuckles, Blaze, and maybe Silver if there's an element for psychokinesis or something.)

Yeah, but in all seriousness, I'd love for some kinda "flow" mechanic. What I mean is: You're rewarded for sequence breaking and keeping some flow, not stopping. Getting more points for speedy platforming rather than choppy platforming, y'know?
