Sonic's Re-think/New Direction 2012

I'm guessing soon enough a new Sonic game will be announced but what do you think there next move will be? Do you think they'll stay with the Hedgehog Engine to play safe or create something completely new and risk a repeat of Sonic 06?
What would you like to see? Would you like a full fledged 3D game like the Adventure series but in HD?
Would you want it to have 2D Sections included like the Unleashed saga?
Should new characters be introduced or should it start back off with the basics and slowly ease friends back into the games?
What other ideas do you think should be added to the future of Sonic The Hedgehog?

I don't mind what they do, as long as it's fun, fast and chock-full of platforming, and preferrably with the 3D and 2D gameplay being kept to seperate games, or at least 90% one or the other.

Since the "R" trigger is almost never used now in Sonic, why not use that to roll? Imagine looking down a HUGE slope and running at full speed only to press the R trigger and turn into a physics ball.

They need to find a way to make the game original, but not make it feel like a 'gimmick'...
Oh and they need to bring back the spindash <.<

That said, I'd like for them to keep doing what they're doing and actually add something substantial to it.

Personally? I'd like them to re-introduce some of the cast as playable characters. They've mastered Sonic's gameplay, now it is time to see if they can't do the same for say, Tails or Knuckles. To see them actually participating in a non-crappy platformer with good game mechanics would be a pleasant surprise.

As for the actual core gameplay.....broken record here, but Adventure style is what I want. Maybe take a few cues from the Modern titles, like some more high-speed segments with the quickstep and a 2D segment here and there, but mainly I want the 3D platforming to be tightened up and given much more breathing room to explore. I want lots of hidden areas, branching paths, and level design that compliments both speed and platforming. There can be linear paths, but they shouldn't feel linear. Different choices for routes and multiple platforming challenges should be present in all stages.
I think the keyword in my opinion is "options." One of the best things about Sonic 3 & Knuckles was the amount of things you could do, but weren't forced to. Wanna play as Tails? Go ahead. Wanna explore every little nook and cranny to find extra rings? Have at it. Wanna take the time to find and play through all the Special Stages to get the Emeralds? Be my guest. Wanna just zip through the level as fast as possible without exploring? That's fine too. SA2 is also a good example of this. You can relax, hang in the Chao Garden, Kart Race, do a boss run, take on each level's extra objectives, etc. The main story forced you to switch characters, which was bad, but it was good in the optional content aspect. Adding more stuff like this to the games could really turn them from good games into fantastic ones.

I liked the old games for all the different paths you could take. You don't have to go the specific way the game wants you to go, you can choose which way yourself.
I'd agree that the Unleashed style gameplay is getting old. In past games from Adventure to Unleashed, there seems to be something new every game. In SA2, you got to be both sides of the story. In Heroes you went through a stage with multiple characters at a time. Now it's just different stages, same gameplay, same character. What happened to Tails and Knuckles and other important characters? Being those other characters lets you play differently. You can fly, smash things with a hammer, and much more.
Also this new gameplay is all about running through the stage as fast as you can. What happened to enemy score and basing you're end score on enemy score most important, then ring score, then time score. I was always better at getting enemy score and doing all those cool ring dashes than dashing through the stage as fast as I can and not looking back. I always thought getting the score was more fun too.
One more thing. I heard that SEGA was going to make future Sonic games like the Skylanders game where you collect the figures. And they might erase all the characters leaving only Sonic and Eggman, and all the other canon games useless. Like they don't even exist. I'm not liking that idea.

I don't think you are the only one. But frankly, even though SEGA and Sonic Team have shown that they tend to listen to the fans way too literally at times, I don't think they would be stupid enough to do away with all of the other characters. It would be nothing short of financial and fandom suicide.

No more unleashed expansion packs, I am tired of them and did not even beat generations.
Um... what "Unleashed expansion packs?"
