You know, after playing pretty fun titles like Colors and Generations, I feel that the series is doing fine, but needs one or two adjustments.
My first is the one everyone wants. More characters. More playable characters that is. After playing as Sonic for so long, it would be really nice to play as Tails or someone else again. Make them optional.
The second is at least have one story driven game. Not like Chronicles where from what I heard was shit, but an engaging plot, like Unleashed. I would like to see the characters develop a bit more, and see what other situations they can get into. But, it has to be interesting. Not boring, nor bland, nor even shallow.

I wonder if SEGA are thinking of replacing the Hedgehog engine with a more powerful one in time for the launch of the next generation consoles, Xbox 720 and PS4 etc.

As for a reboot, have SEGA gone as far as they can with the modern Sonic gameplay in Generations, or is there more to come?

Personally I think a reboot with SA1 style gameplay would be a good start.

To be honest, I'd like to see a new Adventure styled game. I'd also like it if they ditched the 2D sections. Seriously, IMO, they feel over used since Unleashed.
Boosting? I like it, but I wouldn't be upset if they ditched it or maybe even re-built it.
Something with a good, long storyline, kick ass levels and a awesome new Soundtrack.
Maybe some fun, interactive hub worlds. With mini games, arcades and such. Full of life and believable. (Maybe kinda like Yakuza 3).
and I'm probably going to be bashed, smashed, flamed(whatever it's called now-days) for this one.
The re-inclusion of Sonic's friends in game-play. Just like in SA1. Even give Silver another chance.

That's just what I'd like to see, though.

I don't want hub worlds.

Also, I want other playable characters. But make them play like alternate characters do in 3&K or in Advance

I'm just gonna say: Refine Modern Sonic by nerfing his boost speed back to Colors' and that way, you wouldn't have to make filler acts (Colors pops up) or stuff like Werehog/Classic Sonic. You will also be able to make longer stages. Hopefully, the 2D stays away from this new direction. Sonic Team has to move on, but not forget everything. Of course, the handhelds can still have the 2D games. Hub worlds should be like Unleashed's if they have any. A better story would be good and of course, you could try Tails at least.

Was it? I played the expansion on my PC. Pretty strange, that.

Ok, this joke wasn't really that great, or maybe it was and I killed it. Point is, you could mistake entire levels as being from the wrong game, which is Partly caused by barely being able to tell the levels apart if they weren't different colors.

Knowing who's in charge it could mean anything from "nothing" (Iizuka makes stuff up in interviews a lot) to arbitrarily reconning bits of backstory while making them make less sense (Journey of Dreams canonizing the level select for some unfathomable reason) to Healing on more pointless mechanics. That's our Sonic Team <party horn tweeeert>

Then I guess I could 'accidentally' mistake Chemical Plant being from Sonic 1, or Green Hill in Sonic 2.

The train of thought could be applied to just about any Video game sequel, which is why it's really fucking stupid.

I mean you can barely tell levels apart within the same game. Change in appearence, but not in play.

I don't really mind what direction SEGA might be heading next or whatever their ideas are. I just hope that this new idea for a new game will be much longer and more fun to play.

I would like to see a new Adventure style kind of gameplay with a storyline that's similar to Sonic Colours' storyline along with some DLC, a cool soundtrack and some really good competitive multiplayer both offline and online and let's not forget to include the Chao Garden as well. :D

Also it would be surprisingly amazing to see one of the classic 2D Sonic games turned into 3D Generations style.

I want them to do something new with his speed..... he runs fast, ok kool. But what if he also had a better list of attacks, Think DMC3 mixed with KH2. Yeah I want a more combat feel game... what? :c With his speed... he could make and pull off TONS of moves.

There's a rewarding setup in the combo thing but it REALLY depends on how they set it up. Sonic doesn't HAVE to ALWAYS ALWAYS run.... I dunno. I'm thinking more on the lines of doing something new then just sticking to RUN RUN RUN. But I'm one of the few people who got bored of the faster faster faster gameplay sonic has. :C
