Disney Thread

I've searched the forums and I can't seem to find a thread about just general Disney stuff, so I thought I'd make a thread about it.

What can you say, it's Disney.

You can say what you want about the company; that they're an evil corporate organization bent on ruling us all, but they've always been there. In some way or another, Disney has influence us all throughout our lives, and I thought it'd be best to talk about them.

I'll talk about my favorite film later, I want to start off this thread with some bad news. (Aren't I just a doll.)

All the old Disney Princesses are getting new voices.

"They did a one-fell swoop of all the older princesses and decided to replace all of us," (Paige O'Hara) says. "I was very upset," to the point of re-recording some lines to prove she could still cut it.

No Paige? No Jodi Benson? No Linda Larkin? No Ming-Na? Damn... so that leaves us with... Anika Rose (good), and Mandy Moore... balls.

I prefer individual threads rather than one big thread on Disney, especially for movies and old school shows.wink.png

Anyway Disney. I think they are capable of great entertainment but they are also capable of bringing some (not all) mediocre and unnecessary sequels and just pure soulless crap like High School Musical. That of course is just my opinion.

I admit at first I didn't know what think about John Lasseter. But I personally think he doing a good job on the animation side of Disney. smile.png

What'chu talkin' bout, Blur? Mandy Moore did a fine job as Rapunzel.

Anyway, kind of a lip-curling maneuver. The Disney princesses have very distinct voices, and I'm confident these replacements aren't going to cut the mustard for people who have an ear for these characters. But at the same time, the article mentions that O'Hara had to struggle to get back in the range she used for Ariel. I'm not sure how old the rest of the actors are, but their voices may be turning just as indistinct. A bit of a shame, although honestly I'm more torn about Glen Keane leaving. He's a big part of why the Renaissance era was so successful, and the main reason why Tangled was so damn good. I really hoped he was going to hit a second stride and have a hand in most of the upcoming features. =(

Wasn't Ariel voiced by Jodi Benson? It is sad that they getting replaced its not like the really old Disney Princesses like Snow White, Cinderella or Aurora which I assume now have different voice actors.mellow.png

I just didn't enjoy Mandy Moore in the role. Her acting felt so stilted. I knew I was listening to an actress trying to play the role of Rapunzel, and I don't like that immersion being broken.

Glen Keane. I am going to miss that man's work in Disney. He brought so much life to the Rennaisance, and hey, his work on Tangled was a great movie thanks to his direction.

Yeah, I meant to say Belle, but I'm always getting their voice actors mixed anyway. xP

If I were to put a huge silver lining on this decision, it would be that it's likely these new actors aren't getting any real shots at sequels considering Lasseter cracked down on that. Honestly, the princesses haven't been all that relevant since that decision anyway. Maybe a few gigs on Princess commercials and things, but that's about it.

Its okay, I can see why, thinking about it! wink.png

There voices will probably used on toys and really lame cash in games anyway. smile.png

There seems to be a lot of anniversaries going on this year.

First there's the 85th anniversary of Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, the 75th anniversary of Snow White, the 45th anniversary of the Jungle Book, the 30 anniversary of Tron, the 25th anniversary of DuckTales, the 20 anniversary of Aladdin (which will be released on Blu-Ray next Spring >sad.png ), the 15th anniversary of Hercules, and the Kingdom Hearts 10th anniversary alongside Lilo & Stitch. And on that note, I would like to point out that there was an anime chronicling Stitch's life after the series that aired on Disney Channel Japan and later on Disney XD but only for a short time.

I've heard about that. Not watched it myself (only seen bits of the adult Lilo episode), but eh.

I remember not being bothered by Lilo and Stitch when it first came out, even though I had plenty of the McDonalds toys. Then I saw bits of the animated series, and I sort of fell in love with that and backtracked.

Thinking about it, I think Lilo and Stitch was kinda the springboard for where I am now in regards to shipping, but I won't talk about that if you lot don't want to hear it. :3

That and Kingdom Hearts. That's all I can really think of.

My thoughts on DIsney can be pretty much summarized in two sentences:

Love their animated stuff (this including their animated movies, their animated cartoons) some of their live-action stuff, and their characters (both heroes and villians alike).

Hate most of their live action stuff that's your run-off-the-mill mediocre tween fare, and some of their boneheaded decisions they've made in the past.

What was the last original thing Disney has ever made? (When I mean Disney, I mean DISNEY not pixar.)

While you can argue that The Princess and the Frog and Tangled are original in that they stray farther from their source material than past princess films, Bolt from 2008 is not based on any existing myth and property.

Define Disney because I thought all those films you mentioned are great, Disney always sort strays from the source material.smile.png

What do you mean define Disney? The poster who I was responding to made it fairly clear what part of Disney I mean: Walt Disney Animation Studios, not including Pixar now. xP

Also, I'm not deriding any of the films as being bad, merely answering his question. He asked what was the last original film Disney made, which I'm assuming means a film not based on a fairy tale, novel, play or IP; the answer's Bolt.

Oh my bad, yeah Bolt was last non-fairy tale Disney movie and Princess & The Frog was the last (hopefully not ever) 2D Disney film. I think Wreck-It-Ralph is next Disney film, Pixar's next film is Brave.smile.png

Oh he got banned? And I heard a Sequel to the muppets is being made. While I am happy about that I would rather see the muppet show return to television but hey, I'm pleased either way.

I saw at Christmas, I just forgot about it because usually Winnie The Pooh aren't always counted in Disney Animation Studios lists of releases apart from the new one and the 1977 one. smile.png
