Sonic Team seems to enjoy bombarding us with an assortment of forgettable and/or annoying new characters, with a good handful of them being voiced so horribly that you relish the option to skip cutscenes.
Maybe they just dump them all around Sonic to make him seem even cooler in comparisson, I dunno.
But anyway, I think they'd get mad props if they allowed the characters to blossom in the hearts of the fans, simply by giving us the chance to control them and beat the crap out of each other. Even someone as infuriating as Big the Cat, God rest his innocent confused soul (I think he got killed off), could be revered as quite the contender in a fighting genre. As for the characters the majority of us actually DO like, such as Blaze, the experience would be all the more amazing. Go on, imagine it! Now wipe the drool from your chin.
Past Sonic games of the fighting genre have left me with a grumbling stomach in hunger for more. Sonic the Fighters was a good idea, being completely different to what you'd usually expect from a Sonic game, but the gameplay experience was short and left a dull taste in my mouth for the most part. Wasn't really amused with the comical fighting animations. I suppose I'd have enjoyed it more had I played it during the era of its original release, but I played it on Gems. Whatever. Turning Super was a nice touch though. But 8 Chaos Emeralds? Gerrouttahere..
Now Sonic Battle, that was the shit, yo! A real step in the right direction, even with its flaws. Not to mention the holy grail for spriters. Even though all the characters pretty much shared the exact same button combinations for attacks, they still all handled very differently from each other. I'm sure a lot of you who played Battle found a new respect for whichever characters you played with the most (Shadow, 99.9% of you). Or you couldn't give two shits about them and just whored their skills out to Emerl to create the most game-breaking character possible. Anyway, it was a good game for what it was, right? I'm starting to ramble so I'll wrap it up.
I'd very much like to see a Sonic game featuring a massive roster of characters from the Sonic universe. Perhaps with 3D characters and stages but with 2D gameplay? Like Budokai 3 or something. Loved that game so much, which is why I used it as an example. Or if it was on a hand-held platform it could be like designed like Card Sagas Wars (if you haven't heard of it, look it up, seriously). Anyway I'm very interested to hear what other people think regarding this possibility. Think it could already be in the works?
Also, I've always fantasized about a typical hold-right-to-win Sonic game but with beat-em-up sections.. Certain levels or level segments would have you change to a different button configuration designed for fighting enemies that can't be taken out merely with a homing attack. I really enjoyed using Sonic's Tornado attack in Heroes, and I'd love to see the level up feature again. Punching and kicking stuff break-dance style would be fun right? Would be great to see his Ground/Air shot and Ring Toss from Battle, too. Or hey, it could just be another Sonic & Knuckles game where Sonic's about the 2D speed and Knuckles beats the crap out of stuff in a 3D environment.. Pretty much Sonic Unleashed but with Knuckles instead of the Werehog. And less gay-looking "dark" enemies.
Anyway, opinions, please.
- Which developers do you think would do the best job? Regarding art style and whatnot, 2D or 3D movement, etc.
- Which characters would you like to see most? Dig deep, anyone from the Sonic universe (or even Sega characters as secret unlockables or bosses).
- What kind of attack command input style that you're familiar with would you like to see? (e.g. Tekken or Street Fighter or whichever fighting games you're used to)
