Hello, my friends!

A lot of times, I find myself posting different character designs and concept art on status updates here on SSMB, and ask for opinions and constructive criticism on them. I figured that instead of doing that, I might be better off just making a topic for this stuff in the Sonic Showcase thread... so here I am! The stuff I'll be posting here is mostly artwork and concept art of Sonic characters drawn in my own style, which I will be using for animated parody videos later down the road. I want my future animation to appeal to a wide audience, but the Sonic stuff is made with mostly Sonic fans in mind (naturally), which is why I care about what Sonic fans think of my work. There are also many, many talented people on here as I've discovered after looking at other topics in this thread, so I think it would be super swell to get constructive criticism from them as well. smile.png To start off, I'll be showing everything that I have thus far.

Here, we've got near final concept art of the main cast (I say "near final" because I may do some tweaking to them before I actually start up my animation) that I've shared before. As you can see, pretty much everyone is off model. I used to try to draw the characters as on-model as possible, but I realized that for parody work, it would be better if this wasn't the case, and I just made the characters in my own style. It's also kind of a throwback to old video game cartoons, in that a lot of characters almost never looked like they did in the games (remember Bowser in the Mario cartoons? What about Mega Man in "Captain N: The Game Master"? Haha...). Even though I draw the characters to fit my style, I've been really inspired by the older Sonic cartoons, as you can probably tell. For starters, I drew a lot of inspiration from AoStH when making Sonic and Tails. For Sonic, the design in AoStH was obviously based off of the classic design, but in my videos, there is no "classic" or "modern" Sonic. There's just Sonic. I tried to take elements from both designs when drawing Sonic. The design looks more classic, but the color schemes are more reminiscent of the modern design. On most of the characters, the eyes are drawn as just black dots, however, their eyes are actually supposed to be the color of the modern designs... it's just simplified. If Sonic's eyes were to ever bug out in a cartoony fashion for example, they would be seen as green. As you can tell, Tails' color scheme is a mix of AoStH and SatAM (the shoes), though I may change his color to more of an orange for the final design. Not much to say with Knuckles and Shadow... I just designed them to fit in with the rest. Amy was purposely drawn as just a pink Sonic with a dress and a bow as kind of an homage to Mickey and Minnie. Metal Sonic is obviously the most off-model, haha, being a parody of the Tin-man from Wizard of Oz. Eggman is a mixture of his classic design with a bit of AoStH Robotnik in there.

Lastly, we've another Sonic, this time facing the front. Now, as I said, my Sonic design was inspired by the old Sonic cartoons, which is why I've adopted the whole "three flat quills" look as I like to call it. Basically, in most of the Sonic cartoons, Sonic's quills would stay the same shape, no matter which direction he's facing, similarly to Mickey Mouse's ears, which is something I've always liked. Obviously, Sonic doesn't have three quills on his head, he has six, and they aren't flat. I think in 2D animation, however, it's easier to animate Sonic with the three flat quills style, which aside from being an homage to the old Sonic cartoons, is the reason I'm doing this. In this picture, however, his quills are the same shape they would be if he were to be facing the side, but they're raised quite a bit. This image was actually inspired by this still of Sonic facing the front in AoStH:

Welp... that's everything I have so far. Like I said, I'd love to hear some feedback and constructive criticism from you guys, as I really want to know what the Sonic fans think. Thanks so much in advance. smile.png I'll likely be posting more designs when I make them in the near future.

EDIT: Gonna add a more recent drawing in the OP because I can't stand to look at my old stuff... xD Here's the banner I did for some shit-ass site called "The Sonic Stadium". pffffffffff

Nice work! Your style is unique and I love how expressive the faces of the characters are. I can't offer any criticism because I don't see anything in your work to be critical about. If you know what I mean...Posted Image All of it looks good! Looking forward to seeing more from you!

Thanks a lot! I really appreciate it. :) I'm really happy to see that most people that have commented on my stuff so far through the status updates have had little to no complaints. Some even offered suggestions, which I ended up using for the finished designs. As I recall, Super Sonic was slightly tweaked from the original sketch thanks to feedback from users on here. Definitely open to suggestions, as long as they're feasible. All I'm saying is: don't expect too many changes to the physics. Wait, what?

New concept art! Here we've got the Werehog, drawn to fit in with the other characters. Didn't change a whole lot from the actual design on this one. Got rid of the shoes and made the tail longer to make it seem more wolf-like. Made the eyes pink like I did with my older concept art from 2011 (the one on the right), which actually happened by accident initially, and I left it in because I kinda liked the look of it. Also added green hues to the skin and fur as kind of a nod to the Hulk... even though you might not be able to see it unless it's zoomed in. :P

First time drawing a character in front of a background! This is also my first attempt at designing Green Hill, so it's pretty rough right now. Should it appear in an animation, I'll be sure to clean it up a bit. Can't wait to see this in motion one day. :D

So, originally, I was gonna draw Sonic in Starlight Carnival, but this happened instead. XD

Posted Image

Lately, I've been drawing Sonic in my own cartoony style (as seen in the original post). I haven't tried drawing Sonic on-model for a while, so I'm a bit rusty. I think this turned out... okay. xD The background and foreground were kinda rushed (mainly because I had to restart them a couple times and got frustrated X_x) so they kinda look like poop. I'm not a super great artist, but I'm gonna start practicing a lot more. I know for sure that there's a lot of amature mistakes in this picture, mainly with proportions and such, and they will probably make some excellent artists on here groan, but like I said, I need practice. XD

EDIT: I can totally see this as being a vacation photo for Sonic, haha. Like, it'd be on a postcard that reads "Wish you were here!" or something. XD

Haven't posted anything here in a while... so I figured I'd change that! Drew the Chaotix in my style, which is how they'll look if I were to ever include them in an animated parody. Also tried a different coloring method with these. I posted this in a status update earlier, and a big thanks to those that gave me feedback!

The most common thing said was that Charmy's clothes looked too bulky, which is actually kind of intentional. For whatever reason, I dressed him up like a '50s air pilot, and when I animate him later down the road, I plan to incorporate the clothing in his design with his movement. I picture him moving very clumsily, always walking into things and constantly having to lift his helmet up, because it's too big for him, haha. Another thing brought up was that his legs are yellow, when they're supposed to be black. I had pictures of both classic and modern designs for Charmy (and even the Honey Nut Cheerios bee, haha) open as references, so I knew they were supposed to be black. I even had them colored black initially, but I didn't like how it looked, so I changed them to yellow.

Thought I'd update this poop one more time, as I've made a couple new things since. XD

I've been trying out a different method of coloring my character art. Before, I used to use the air brush tool for the shading, but now I use the more traditional method of drawing in the lines and filling them in (don't know if there's an actual name for that, haha), making my character art resemble more closely what they'll actually look like if I were to shade them in an animation. As for the colors, before I used to use mostly default colors, and if I was doing a parody (like Sonic), I'd use the eye dropper tool and extract the colors from official artwork, and use that. I decided to try something else now, and fiddle around with the colors and make my own instead.

62578_447933148612017_637128335_n.jpg

I redrew a picture of Shadow I did in my style from last year, and applied the new colors and shading method, and I was pretty happy with the results. Decided to make Shadow really pale, as I felt it suited him. Rather than making the fur color fully black, I used a very dark blue. I'm really leaning towards the new colors and shading method for my character art, but I think I may still use the air brush shading for illustrations, perhaps on title cards for animations or something.

563006_447995271939138_1969334525_n.jpg

Also drew a new Sonic, and applied the new colors and shading to him.

This'll probably be the last update I post on here for a while, just thought I'd post the rest of what I made yesterday. Any feedback on the new colors/style would be greatly appreciated! Again, big thanks to those that gave me great feedback when I posted this stuff on status updates. smile.png

EDIT: I also wanna make it clear that the key word here is "parody". xD I've had a few people point out how things aren't "accurate", like the colors I used, or how "Sonic's quills are escaping to one side", as somebody put it (XD), but they aren't meant to be accurate. The animations these character designs are gonna appear in are meant for laughs. My art style has always been quirky and goofy, as that's what I like, so characters aren't meant to be on-model. I'm not making animated Sonic fan fiction here. I'm doing satirical and comedy videos. :D

Soo... I said that my update from yesterday was my last update for a while. I lied. xD; Thought I'd upload the rest of what I have just to finish things up here. So I guess this will be my last update I post on here for a while! Haha.

swellimation___sonic_concepts_ver__2_by_

Redrew the Sonic characters from the model sheet I did last year (in the opening post), only with the updated colors and shading. Made some minor changes to some of the character designs. Amy's shoes are now yellow, making her even more Minnie Mouse-esque, and I gave Metal Sonic a mouth. Decided that if I were to include him in an animation, I wanna make him talk, instead of just making robot sounds. And I know people might point out the eyes on Tails and Knuckles, so I wanna mention that when I animate these characters, they'll have visible eyelids. Only certain expressions will have their eyes look like that, to add a more cartoony effect.

I'm really liking the zany cartoony style you've got! That new lineup is just wonderful with how dynamic and different each of the poses are; it makes each character feel more fresh and appealing to look at.

I'm also liking how you've stylised them all in some way, I really like the Metal Sonic as the Tin Man idea.

Sonic looks like he's a little too excited on the left there... Eggman's the one who's supposed to crack, not you, Sonic!

Wonderful work! Keep it up and keep putting it up!
