One of Sony's most beloved first-party PlayStation 1 games is coming to the PS3 and PSP via ... a company other than Sony. Tomba!, the platformer starring the pink-haired caveman, will be released on the PlayStation Network soon by MonkeyPaw Games.

In addition to being just incredibly cute, Tomba! has some serious credentials. After an illustrious career at Capcom during which he designed the Ghosts 'n Goblins games and produced the Mega Man series, Tokuro Fujiwara founded his own studio, Whoopee Camp, where he directed Tomba! and its sequel for publisher Sony Computer Entertainment.

"Sony and MonkeyPaw have a good working relationship," MonkeyPaw CEO John Greiner told Joystiq. "I think they appreciate the titles we've brought to the Store. And they value the support we give the games. Having a plethora of Japanese content is a distinct advantage PlayStation has over Xbox. But the games still need to be brought Stateside. So our model helps Sony spread their Japanese edge and we help Japanese developers get their titles to a wider audience. Hence, Sony is willing to work with us on titles that may not have otherwise been licensed out. Support is key."

MonkeyPaw has been working on acquiring the Tomba! rights for a year. "We often have to chase down multiple right holders," Greiner said. "In this case, Sony and Whoopee Camp had rights that needed to be negotiated." The deal didn't necessarily include the sequel, however. "Tomba! 2 is a possibility but we need to really sell Tomba! 1 well before we can extend our relationship," Greiner explained. "It's the first time to work with Fujiwara-san so we're trying to make a good impression. Good sales have a way opening doors a bit wider.

Always had a demo for this game. Could never find it in stores.

Shame too, 'cause the demo is wonderfully fun. Looks like this is my chance.

PSN is slow when it comes to uploading Classic PS1 games. So is this just for the Japan/US PSN? Posted Image

FUCK YEAH! This has made my day. I just hope it's coming to Europe, too. I loved this back in the day. Never got to play the sequel, so I hope the first game sells well so that also gets released.

First game was the one with permanently missable events, was it? This time I'll grab a walkthrough and finish the game 100%, I swear.

oh man that is so sweet. I played Tomba as a kid, but I played its sequel a lot too. Problem is I was a dumb kid and utterly terrible at the game, but I'm totally picking this up.

Hopefully Tomba 2 comes to PSN as well. That game was a lot better to me. Although it had really cringeworthy voice acting at points. (Assuming the voice acting was different in the European version due to the different character name.) Wait, it turns out you guys got the same VA's who re-recorded the lines.

Assuming the European PSN will get it around the same time, or at least down the road. I wouldn't worry.

Tomba fucking rules. as a kid I liked the sequel more but nowadays I prefer the first.

Such a damn solid game with it's weird platformer/sidequest combo. Totally unique and totally fun.

I wish I was able to get ahold of the PS1 original, but yeah.

I never played this and I don't have a PS3, but cool to know. This kind of reminds me how awesome it would be if the US PSN also got Ape Escape while they were at it, since Japan got it five years ago. As much as I'd really like to pick this up sometime, I might have to resort to emulation for now.

I got Ape Escape for £5 last year. Pretty neat, but not exactly a fave.

I guess if Tomba's also a very Japanese cult game like that, I could give it a whirl when it hits PSN.

Never played the original, but I remember seeing it at Toys 'R' Us and wanting it, but I didn't have a PS at the time.

Edit: It seems the name of the game was changed to "Tombi!" here Posted Image

I remember playing the demo of this when I was a kid! I don't have a PS3 or PSP, but as mentioned previously, it's good to know it's coming out. Posted Image

I'm one of the lucky ones whostill owns the original psone game (EU version, named Tombi), apparantly it's quite rare now.

Such a great game, hope this gets a europe release too aswell as the sequel which is also meant to be great.

I could always do with adding another platformer to my repertoire, and I think I have some credit on my US account. Sweet.
