Courage The Cowardly Dog was another amazing cartoon from Cartoon Network's golden age. Making it's way to televisions all across the world on November 12th, 1999 the show pushed the boundaries for what could be done on a kid's show with a Y7 rating. The show is often noted for its surreal, often disquieting humor and bizarre plot twists. The series combines elements of black comedy, comedy horror, science fantasy, surrealism and sometimes drama. Fans from all over enjoyed this fresh new cartoon until it sadly ended production on November 22nd, 2002 with over 52 episodes and very high ratings.

The show stared Courage, an orphan dog who was adopted by a sweet old lady Muriel, along with her sour mean husband Eustace Bagge. Courage thought he had found the perfect life, living on a farm in the middle of Nowhere, surrounded by a loving family (sorta) and peace and quiet.

....That is unless you count all the "weird" things that happen. Not too many weird things though, just mainly little stuff like....

Spoiler

See, this show was built on Nightmare Fuel!

It almost seemed as if each episode was intentionally trying to give kids nightmares or wet the bed when they saw this show. There are over thousands of horrifying, freaky, dreadful things in this show, (most of which I expect you all to name a few) and it really drew in the atmosphere and separated this show from just being "another kid's cartoon".

Just how did the show manage to stay on for so long with all this stuff? Why by adding good old fashioned slapstick comedy. Courage was usually the one to suffer through all this, by being hit on the head, falling into a volcano, stomped on, squished, sprayed, almost everything. It may seem bad, but he always pulls through in the end, with a happy ending for him and Muriel (unfortunately, Eustace seems to have almost as bad luck as Courage in most episodes) Jokes that flew over kid's heads, along with the surreal randomness is what drew some viewer's from the not intended age group (teens, adults, etc)

But, another thing that was great about this show, was the drama. It may have seemed silly back then, but alot of episodes actually managed to pull some heartstrings out there. The show also took on some adult themes like prostitution, drugs, domestic abuse, abandonment issues, disorders, etc. Obviously the show couldn't tackle these head on, so some scenes of comedy is always present. Though they may not always work. Like the episode where Courage tries to save the tree from being cut down, or when Courage helps the mean cat rescue her friend, and escape from the dogs? I know some of you remember Doctor Zalost! But to me, one of the best episodes was where we learn of Courage's past, and what happened to his parents in his sad early life.

You know damn well when you first saw this episode, you felt those tears coming!

Also, this show has some really, really, great music!

There are so many things to love and appreciate about this show. With a lovable cast, and some excellent writing and animation, it truly was a one of a kind show, and will always be missed. What about you though, huh? What are your thoughts on this nightmarish, dramatic, gem?

Return the slab...

Haunts me to this day, and I've only seen that episode once. Great show though.

This episode. This fucking episode made me cry so hard. I never thought that a cartoon involving gaint space squids would make me feel sad.

I remember watching Courage when I would stay over my grandparents' house. I would stay up late and then sleep on the couch in the living room with the tv on. Thinking about the show reminds me more of those nights than the actual series, which I'm pretty sure freaked me out

Ha I love courage! Used to watch it all the time. Unfortunately today's censorship in cartoons is probably worse the shitty ass SNES port of Mortal Kombat; replacing the blood with spit. Laughable. They would not be allowed to air courage in CN's current line up.

I used to watch this around the same time I watched Dexter's Lab and Samurai Jack.

Surprisingly, this show never really scared me. I mean, I knew it was creepy but it never scared me.

Ah, memories. This show was fantastic. Looking back, one thing I love about it was that it combined lots of great elements to make a very unique show. It was horror-themed for the most part, but infused it with very silly humor, and at times was actually a very heartwarming show (without coming off as "lame" for the young viewers). I especially remember the episode with that little hunchback character that made friends with Courage. It was very touching, something most shows nowadays don't even try, let alone pull off extremely well.

And, of course, there was the gross-out moments. My favorite bit of comedy gold was when an alien came down in a big UFO. It snarled at Courage, Courage got so spooked that his guts flew out of his mouth, the alien got scared by that, and it went back in its UFO and flew away. The whole scene lasted about 10 seconds, and I don't even remember what episode it was from. I just love it.

But overall, unlike many others, I don't remember being scared by many of the episodes as a kid. OH, except for the violin girl. That scared the shit out of me. Other than that, I recall laughing more than cowering. It's just a fantastic show, something that most likely will never be replicated in any cartoon ever again.

Plus it had this.

Hate to break it to you, but they've reaired it multiple times, during the morning to boot.

Still one of my favorite cartoons of all time. It's so weird and I tend to forget about it so much just because it kinds just "showed up" and never really paraded itself around like other shows at the time, to me anyways. It's a great show though, and pretty original at that. I especially like how they handle him being just a dog that makes noises most the time, but isn't afraid to talk once in a blue moon for a one-liner or something. The show always reminds me of the bond my grandma has with her dog to, so that's always sweet.

I really can't find myself to talk about more than just gush. And I think it's appropriate, it really deserves it XD. I should really watch all the episodes back to back here shortly, thanks for reminding me of it again, <3.

Actually, just a month or two ago, they had Courage the cowardly dog, Cow and chicken and Johnny Bravo on daytime Cartoon Network.

Shame really, because I bet you they got most of their views that day for the rest of this year.

EDIT: Beaten to the punch D:

Courage is probably my favorite cartoon of all time. It knew how to make me laugh, cry and freak the fuck out on a whim. Awesomely paced, great characters, engaging storylines and a memorable soundtrack. Nothing bad to say about this show.

This show, I don't fucking understand.

When I was young I find this show very creepy, and some episodes actually scare the hell out of me. Basically I should say I don't like this show at all. However for some reason I can't stop watching it on TV. Whenever it's on, I watch it.

It's strange. How can I watch the show that I don't like? Any show that I don't like, I change the channel. Courage was different.

Can't believe this show was still airing new episodes (and on its last season) exactly 10 years ago. I didn't like the show then, but because this thread is dripping in nostalgia I now have the urge to watch this show again. Maybe I'll like it for sure this time because I won't be creeped out like before.

I love this show, especially when it was most strangest, creepiset, and funniest.

Like some others have said, I don't really recall being scared much by it. I think the episode with the cat with the huge white mask might had creeped me out. Same with the violin girl. Funny enough, I wasn't scared by King Ramses (oh, come on..... lol)

Thankfully I didn't see the Perfect episode when I was younger, I'm sure the third (floating random papers) and last nightmare sequence (the one with the vase) might had scared me (whether the Perfect Trumpet Thingy might had scared me I'm not sure of).

My favorite episode is probably Courage in the Big Stinkin' City (yep, the one with the aforementioned violin girl). Now, I just laugh my head off at Courage's reaction to that scene as well as his other reactions to the other random things hiding behind the doors. Speaking of which, almost anything Courage does out of fear/panic/whatever is just flat-out hilarious:

With this one being my absolute favorite:

I really do hope that John R. Dilworth gets another oppurtunity to do another cartoon someday.
