Genre: Mass-Action Strategy

Publisher: Nintendo

Release: Launch Window

Players: 1

The Return of an Army

Pikmin 3 is a fully reimagined, mass-action strategy title from the critically acclaimed Pikmin series. Players will discover a beautiful world filled with strange creatures and take command of a swarm of ant-like Pikmin trying to survive. The world is densely packed with treasures and enemies, which makes the game much more action focused and fills it with layers of potential strategies and paths, adding greater replayability to challenge modes.

Features:

Players can play using Wii Remote Plus and Nunchuk-based controls or the Wii U GamePad controller. With new intuitive controls that make it possible to aim at objects directly, players can command their tiny, yet powerful, squads in different ways.

The GamePad acts as an overhead map and radar to track Pikmin movements in real time. Players can slide a finger across the touch screen to quickly switch between areas, giving greater flexibility in commanding multiple groups of Pikmin.

The greater processing and HD capabilities of the Wii U console are put to extensive use, resulting in a more intricately designed world, enhanced ant-like movement of the Pikmin and precisely detailed overhead views for enabling easier strategic use of the Pikmin.

After completing a stage, the replay feature allows players the option to review their results using the GamePad and TV. Fast-forward, rewind or pause while assessing the previous mission to decide on other paths.

In addition to the five original types of Pikmin encountered in previous games, the new Rock Pikmin bring powerful new abilities and are able to crack hard outer shells of enemies and break through solid barriers.

Mission Mode challenges players to earn the most treasure in a given time.

Also, Captain Olimar isn't here for some reason, but Nintendo says it's a secret. Wonder what it is...

I never payed attention to this series before, but seeing how this was the only interesting title they showed, I may get it to what all the hype is about. Look nice that's for sure

Looks like rock Pikmin aren't the only new critters... If you look at the trailer preview image, you can see pink things flying around. They too have purple flowers on their heads.

Flying Pi(n)kmin confirmed...?

Seriously can't wait for this game. If it's a release title, it's cemented my purchase of a Wii-U on day one.

Hurr Hurr Captain Olimar's been kidnapped and it's up to the others to save him....that's likely what it is, but hey who knows.

Anyway the game is gorgeous, and though I don't have any experience of playing with Captain Olimar other than spamming and trolling with Pikmin in Smash Bros, the game DOES look interesting. Problem is, when a game has a bunch of sequels, I feel like I have to play them all in chronological order, hence why I've never really got into the Zelda series.

It is a release title, Katzii. Everything Nintendo showed was but, they confirmed it right after the show anyway.

Ah, cheers Crow - I obviously didn't hear that part ;-)

Then yes, my wallet is going to cry by year end!

Might as well get a grave stone ready for it, considering there's more than 1 launch game worth having for once in a long time.

A bundle would be a lot more useful for me at this launch than at the Wii one. I don't quite understand what all's happening in the clip - you shoot the Pikmin at the fruit? - but I've ordered the Pikmin 2 revision so maybe that will help clarify things. I've never actually played Pikmin, although I always thought the premise looked intriguing.

Pikmin 1 was the first game I got with my GCN, along with Pokémon Colosseum. But I never managed to get very far with. The whole "you have a time limit to complete the game" thing really, really annoyed me. And I never got Pikmin 2 because lazy. Ordered the Wii versions of both now in anticipation of this :D

As much as Nintendo's conference royally disappointed me, I think Pikmin 3 is enough to warrant purchasing a Wii U for me.

I love the first game (just completed 'bout a week ago) and I plan on getting the sequel's Wii version tomorrow when it comes out in the US. Pikmin seems like one of Nintendo's more creative and quirky franchises, and I love it for that. Pikmin 3 looks to continue the high-quality gameplay with some nice new features. The boss fights, from the one we've seen, look much more interesting, and the general gameplay looks fun as ever. Also, from the videos, I didn't expect it to be in 60fps. That confirmation was a nice surprise.

But with the 4 new playable characters, I really hope Nintendo embraces online multiplayer. Playing through the many modes with 3 other people, online or off, would be a brilliant experience. Plus it appears the 4 characters can interact with eachother, as seen when one player throws another character across a gap as he would a Pikmin. This could open up some fun possibilities for multiplayer. Pikmin 2 had multiplayer, so I expect there to be some form of it in Pikmin 3, but I just hope it gets expanded upon. Preferably by making the main story mode co-op compatible.

Overall, looks great, easily my favorite game of E3, and I can't wait to hear more.

NPC Pikmin 2 is just coming out in the US now? Wow, we've had it since like '09. How did NoA fuck that up so badly?

As for multiplayer/co-op, I'm sure there'll be at least co-op campaign. That's probably the reason for the 4 playable characters à la NSMB, Rayman, Kirby etc. Dunno about online, though. It should be there, but who knows.

They decided not to release it alongside Pikmin 1 back then. Don't know why they did that, but it's being released now under the Nintendo Selects brand obviously to get folk ready for Pikmin 3. And even though they released Power Tennis in the US under NPC, they've gone and released it again under Nintendo Selects as an obvious cash-in because of the 3DS game.

No Online

In the situation of Pikmin, for example, since you would have lots of individual, small creatures, the Pikmin, whose every movement and location is going to be really important in the game, it would be very difficult to sync up over an internet connection.

Really? That's their excuse? Lag in an RTS game? Halo Wars? Starcraft 2? Nintendo still hasn't learned I see.

And this worries me that NSMBU may not have online because of this.

*sigh*

Well I'll have no one to play with locally so looks like I'm going solo on Pikmin 3. It's no deal-breaker for me at all but it would have been neat.

To be honest, I don't like online co-op that much, I prefer having a person next to me if Im playing co-op, so that's not too bad.

That's Challenge Mode, a returning feature from Pikmin 2 where you gained points by retrieving fruit and the corpses of the enemies you defeated.

Also: Do people seriously view Pikmin as a multiplayer game? I don't know, I liked it the way it was in 2. Yeah, I know you could do co-operative in challenge mode but, I preferred controlling everything myself.

Game looks rad. This, Rayman and Mario are the main reasons I'm getting a Wii U at launch.

Problem is, when a game has a bunch of sequels, I feel like I have to play them all in chronological order, hence why I've never really got into the Zelda series.

Most of the Zelda games are standalone titles. There's a timeline(one Nintendo TOTALLY BOTCHED) but almost any game is a good jumping-on point because it's a different Link in every story, and the stories themselves all have little to do with eachother. Majora's Mask and Wind Waker, Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks being the only games really connected to other ones. And even then...

So yeah, you should totally play Zelda.

/Pikmin=Wisps --> Wisps = Pikmin?
No.

Well the time limit for the overall story in Pikmin 2 is lifted, even if you've still got a daily time limit.

People complaining about the time limit has always been weird to me. I guess I get that it can be annoying for some, but I tend to think a lot of them (not necessarily you) dislike it because they view it purely as a restriction without considering what it actually adds to the game. Only having 30 days on Earth may be harsh, but if the games didn't have ANY time limits, there'd basically be no strategy or depth at all. You'd be able to just round up and farm Pikmin, which would make them all really expendable.

No Online

It probably won't. Nintendo doesn't really DO online. I'd obviously love to see it, but I'll personally be playing a lot of local co-op.

But in the case of Pikmin I can see why it doesn't have an online multiplayer component. As neat as it looks, multiplayer's not one of the franchise's main attractions, and putting in the time, money and resources to have functioning and well-coded online multiplayer system could prove to be more trouble than it's worth. It's not just something you have or don't have. I do think they're making an excuse with the lag explaination, but there's likely a deeper reason.

They decided not to release it alongside Pikmin 1 back then. Don't know why they did that, but it's being released now under the Nintendo Selects brand obviously to get folk ready for Pikmin 3. Basically this.

I was thinking about picking up the NPC version of Pikmin but I already have a Gamecube copy. Does anyone here have any opinions on it? Is it better on GCN? Is the Wii version the definitive? I'd like to know what you guys think.

I actually just got NPC Pikmin (I keep reading that as Non-Player Character, but in this game it fits either way, I guess) yesterday. It's been a long time since I've played a game knowing that I've already lost, but I figure I may as well finish the month out and die, as I can keep learning about the game and the locations of items in the meantime. If I can collect 2 pieces a day every day left I can still win, but it ain't gonna happen. I can't compare the controls with the GCN, version since the latter have been removed, but I've noticed people complaining about the lack of the C-stick with the Wiimote+nunchuck.

So now I have both NPC Pikmin, since I received my preordered copy of 2 an hour after buying a used version of 1. It sounded like it was better to play them in order if I was going to play both, due to game changes more than storyline. So far, I'm wondering why I waited so long to get it. I'm losing, but it's a fun little game.

Just got NPC Pikmin 2. It's pretty awesome so far, but I wish they would have spent more time making more interesting outdoor areas instead of cramming the game with cave levels. I'd rather have 8 areas and no caves than 4 areas and a bajillion cave levels. Still an awesome game though.

As for controls, which I assume are the same as NPC Pikmin 1, they are, for the most part, an improvement. Pointing and clicking to throw Pikmin is much more fun than moving an analog stick to carefully place your cursor. Plus you have greater range with the new controls, so you can throw Pikmin farther and whistle them back from very long distances. The only complaint I have is the C-stick function, which the motion controls have made a bit wonky. You get used to it, but it's never as accurate as the C-stick on the Gamecube game.

The Official Nintendo Magazine has said that there will be tons of new information about Pikmin 3 in this month's issue, so be on the look-out for that.

Pikmin 3 Boss Battle!

Impressions from NWR (Nintendo World Report)

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/impressions/30647

Yeah, it's Pikmin.

Pikmin 3 is probably the most stunning game on the show floor on Wii U with its wonderful cartoony yet photo-realistic art style. The game itself, while familiar, is very fun.

There were two demo segments shown at E3 2012. One was a Challenge Level where the goal was to collect as much fruit as possible in certain amount of time. The game played like Pikmin from there, as you had access to Red and Rock Pikmin to take out obstacles and bring back fruit to your ship. The rock Pikmin are new, and have more attack power.

12.png

The coolest thing that I noticed about that mode was the replay that was available at the end. You could watch a replay of your entire playthrough, allowing you to devise a new plan of attack to be more efficient and get a higher score. The replay was even cooler because you could watch it on the TV while looking at all the movement done on the larger map on the Wii U GamePad. You could also easily rewind, fast forward, pause, and more on the touch screen.

The second demo was a boss battle, where you faced a rock snake-looking thing. To defeat him, you had to throw rock Pikmin at his outer shell, and then when his gooey innards were exposed, you were best off chucking some Reds in because they would cling to him and keep attacking when he moved around the arena.

The one disappointment to me with the whole demo was the GamePad controls. Compared to the Wii Remote and Nunchuk setup, the GamePad controls were pitiful. Things like throwing Pikmin were oddly mapped to the face buttons instead of the triggers, and there was a distinct lack of precision in throwing your Pikmin. It is possible that a customization option could fix the issues, but I doubt I will spend much time working that out, because the Wii Remote and Nunchuk setup is wonderful.

The latest entry in the mostly dormant series doesn't have anything amazing presented in this demo, but it is a damn fine rendition of the Pikmin gameplay, which is wonderful.

Pikmin 3 is set for a launch window release for Wii U.

This looks incredible, so much detail~ I think this is the one game that would make me want to go out and buy a Wii U (and Rayman Legends, but look what happened >_>). I've only played the first Pikmin but never got to finish it. Still, I enjoyed it a lot.
