According to his interview with IGN.

This eliminates my hope that Retro was perhaps working on a 3DS project to be unveiled later tonight...This greatly saddens me, I was really expecting it to be revealed this year. I guess this just gives me more to look forward to at E3 2013.

Boo

With all the rumors floating around you would have thought that we would have gotten something on this. Aw well, down the road I suppose (TGS maybe?).

Oops! forgot to actually hit paste for the link...*squirms*.

But the fact that they worked on a few levels for Mario Kart 7 doesn't really satisfy me...I feel like they've been prepping some massive title maybe even during development on DKCR...The fact that we don't even have a clue yet is just...crushing. Though I suppose they could always announce a DKCR sequel for 3DS, since Reggie was specifically asked about their Wii U project...but I won't hold my breath.

Reggie's response does indicate to me that Retro don't want to unveil their new project for a while, so it seems the blame is more on Retro's side than Nintendo's.

Still, I guess I can wait for a while longer. No rush.

They must be working on something big if it's taking them this long...

Considering that DKCR hasn't even been out for two years, this doesn't surprise me.

Basically wait for the next big event Nintendo will be at post-Wii U launch.
I can at least accept that Retro didn't want it to be on display just yet. They truly are Rare 2.0.

Wasn't Rare spotted hiring for "AAA" hardcore games recently?

There is hope for them yet.

Microsoft must have asked them to do the hiring process for another studio.

I hope Retro is either doing a new Metroid game or tackling Zelda. Either one would be fantastic.

Nintendo, next E3 you better show me some core franchises on the Wii U (and 2D Mario games don't count)

^I never thought I'd hear the day when a 2D Mario didn't count as a core franchise :P

Joking aside, I agree. I just hope they're saving everything up to counter Xbox 720/PS4's reveals next year.

It seems like they're working on something, and making sure Nintendo stays silent on it for now.

So... I guess we play the waiting game.

They might well have been working on a Wii title which has gradually evolved into a Wii U game. The hardware switch might have necessitated a complete rebuild to accommodate all the new tech involved, and forcing whatever it is to be delayed significantly. I hope whatever it is can wow me like Metroid Prime did, back in the day. Wow, I can't believe I just referred to Prime as a 'back in the day game... feel old now.

On one hand it's a shame, seeing as how an announcement of one more AAA Nintendo title would have been nice for the otherwise lackluster conference. On the other hand, I'm glad Retro is taking the time to give their title extra polish. If there's one thing I associate Retro with, it's polish.

I personally hope it's a Star Fox project. SF never really reached the quality of 64 in subsequent games. Adventure wasn't meant to be an SF title, Assault (in my opinion) had problems but did a lot of things right, and Command was extremely dull. Retro Studios could be just what the series needs to get back on the right track. I'd love to see what they do with intense on-rails action.
