In all seriousness, if I had a tenner for every person who has said to Dread, AAUK or myself "Why can't there be a Summer of Sonic in <Insert country>" I'd probably have bought myself some high quality ear defenders.
SoS started as an internet idea and grew into a convention over two years - the original event itself was actually paid for by SoS staff - that includes hall hire, equipment hire etc...so the intial gamble was ours. It's kinda fortunate that England has so many fans as the first few events really were team efforts. The other advantage is a lot of Sonic related celebs live in the UK.
Sonic Boom was completely a SEGA effort, and both events have been based a ) close to their head offices on the West coast of America and b ) at events where lots of Sonic fans are present or living near.
Absolutely nothing stopping you collecting together a bunch of fans locally and trying to build your own convention, but you have to do a bit of market research into how much it would cost to get guests, hire venues, how many people would come to the convention etc...

And then me and Dread would've sued T for our share, and the entire community would have collapsed and all because you want a Summer of Sonic in Brisbane(!)
Start with smaller groups as we did. Slow build. Then in time if things grow, there's opportunity maybe to deal with SEGA Australia for something. You need to put in the effort on your side to make and create.
It can never be a "Summer Of Sonic" for the same reason we wouldn't allow Boom to be a Summer of Sonic. You need to carve your own path with this.

...you know, I was speaking to Chaos Warp two months ago: we were talking about where we lived (and the awesome concerts like Final Fantasy and LoZ: Symphony of the Goddesses that's going on in his area soon), and I jokingly said something about a SoniCanada meet-up, and he called it a seriously great idea.
...dude, now I wanna make this happen. O_O

Would also be a hell of a lot cheaper than flying overseas

We just talked about how someone could set up their own sonic meeting. Not SOS related at all.

You don't need permission from SEGA, to have a get together of Sonic fans, fyi.
If you want guests and game booths you do, and it's always better to be safe than sorry

Summer of Sonic '08 would like a word. They had Bentley Jones, Richard Jacques and TJ Davis.
But as mentioned elsewhere, you can't expect something huge from the getgo, start with smaller meets and work from there.
