So, these were apparently supposed to be the original Sonic CD special stages. Reminds me of Sonic 1's obviously, but I'm curious to see how it would have turned out (probably worse than Sonic 1's tbh.)

Actually in concept art, at least in SEGA's case, they don't really stick to the books with strictly just drawing Modern Sonic, in location concept work, artist's tend to either add a really basic looking Sonic for scale purposes or to show off a gimmick within the stage, they did this with Generations too since in landscape concept work, Sonic isn't exactly the main centrepiece of attention but he's normally just added for fun, so this probably isn't hinting at Classic being in SLW, more so just a doodle of Sonic that happens to look like Classic Sonic because the artist wanted to draw him.

If that makes sense..?

Basically, they drew classic Sonic because they could.

If Sonic 1's special stages and Knuckles Chaotix's bonus stages had a baby...

...The player would likely be in hospital for a perceived LSD overdose, but after that...

No, I think this one's intentionally designed to look like classic Sonic.

Episode II concept art had Sonic based on his modern design:

There's also concept art of Eggman who despite looking more like the classic design in terms of colors still has the physique of the modern design:

Serpentdoom.jpg

Even other Lost World concept art uses concept art based on the modern design (you can tell by the shoes and skinny body/height, despite Sonic being quite small to see here).

With how Lost World was trying to be one big nostalgia trip, it wouldn't surprise me if Classic Sonic was considered at some point in the design process.

Though overall, I agree, he could make for some interesting DLC. Maybe it'd be like the Nightmare Zone, except Sonic "dreams" he's going through the whole game in his classic build again. Or at least, the 2D parts of it... it would be weird to see Classic Sonic run in 3D. tongue.png

Oh, hey look. A female Katerkiller. We haven't had much in gender variation when it comes to Eggman's robots, seeing how most are gender neutral or modeled in the creator's image.

They also gave eyelashes to the Octus badniks:

Of course, only the pink badniks are allowed to be female. =p

On the topic of LW concept art, I really like these two:

It's a pity that they weren't used in the final product.

Like I said, it all depends on the concept artist who did the piece, they don't need to add Sonic in his canon up-to date design because concept works aren't normally viewable to the public unless SEGA say so, and they're only drawn to show scale against stage details and show how gimmicks would work, drawing Sonic isn't exactly the central most important point for a stage artist, it's more of a choice if they wanted to add him, and in this case the artist clearly prefers Classic Sonic over modern, he is the easiest to draw of the 2 era's after all.

Actually, It was suppose to be a bonus stage and the entrance was suppose to be similar to "Sonic The Hedgehog 3" and "Sonic & Knuckles".

My favorite concept art is this:

http://static4.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20090730000613/sonic/images/thumb/b/b5/Big_4.png/138px-Big_4.png

http://static4.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20090625224240/sonic/images/thumb/7/72/Amy_42.png/138px-Amy_42.png

http://static3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20090730002625/sonic/images/thumb/9/95/Chaos_1.png/142px-Chaos_1.png

and all other concept art of "sonic Adventure DX". I love how "realistic" they look. I always in awe once I try to convince myself they're hand-drawn. Beautiful. And this:

"A tough Team for A Tough Job".

EDIT: Actual concept art.

Big: http://i.neoseeker.com/ca/sonicadv_conceptart_a3Tno.jpg

Robotnik: http://i.neoseeker.com/ca/sonicadv_conceptart_A9cYR.jpg

"Egg Carrier" beta: http://i.neoseeker.com/ca/sonicadv_conceptart_eVvIh.jpg

More "Egg Carrier": http://i.neoseeker.com/ca/sonicadv_conceptart_CEdea.jpg http://i.neoseeker.com/ca/sonicadv_conceptart_5iSDh.jpg http://i.neoseeker.com/ca/sonicadv_conceptart_v7vgF.jpg

They put so many details they put in "Egg Carrier". The wings, the jet engines, the logo, the colors, the laser cockpit, etc. It's like they're making a blueprint for an actually "Egg Carrier". I would actually love that.

Those ain't hand-drawn. They're renders made from 3D models of the characters. Also, that's promotional art that was used in advertisements and is generally linked to the game-- concept art is art that was sketched during the game's development, whether it be concepts for a gimmick, a character design or a level that usually doesn't make it outside of the company, rare occasions aside.

I will agree they look nice, though.

Classic Sonic in Lost World. Wonder if they were actually thinking about that at some point...

All of my want. Why didn't they just make him unlockable after you beat the game?

The color pallet reminds me of "Sonic & Knuckles: Flickies Panic"; a fan game by "LionSoft".

I've created a new Tumblr account where I'll post lots of Sonic art, like SONIC UNDERGROUND model sheets http://pencilhill.tumblr.com/ :)

A few example of stuff I posted today :

I won't post everything at once of course, I still need to scan some. (I think I have 400 sheets for Underground alone, but half of them aren't that interesting and some of them are just animation sequences)

There will be stuff from Archie, StC, the mangas, the cartoons and the games.

Some of Chip's unused designs from Unleashed... yeah, I'm kind of happy these were ditched and we ended up with a much better look for him, although I do get serious Spyro vibes from the bottom left concept.

One motif you can clearly see in Chip's design from the early stages is his hairdo. Even the bird-like designs have it. IIRC, his original name was to be "Whip", like ice-cream, which is what it appears to be styled after. They changed the name to Chip because whip has other... more obvious meanings.

I've scanned 91 backgrounds today. Some of them even mention Sally (being reused from SatAM...).

I got them from a friend of mine in 2004. She sold me those Underground sheets (around 400 of them) and maybe 100 or more of Sonic X (those are already on the net. I think I have one or two of Cosmo though).

I was a bit lazy and didn't scan them until now, haha icon_smile.gif

Today I've scanned more than 90 sheets, including background sketches (and many of them are recycled for SatAM, they even seem to have Ben Hurst and Pat Allee signature on them)

Y'know, if I have to give Underground credit for one thing, it's backgrounds are pretty fucking detailed.

Yeah, I wouldn't  be surprised if they just raided the Satam animation sheet warehouse and stole some of these for their own show.
