They're essentially in name only as their character are different too.

Well, I doubt that problem would happen with Fang, since his personality is such a large part of his character!

A pet peeve of mine is when Sonic's transformations (Super Sonic, Darkspine Sonic, Werehog, whatever) are treated like completely different characters.

I hate this too. Although to be fair, Super was a separate entity in Fleetway (and Sonic Shuffle), so I can understand how people might make that mistake.

Charmy really didn't have much of a character description in Chaotix, he had plenty in that manga he first appeared in but game wise not much before Heroes, so saying they changed his character is kinda debatable.

The only thing we really learned about Charmy in KC is that he loves flowers, which was retained (and expanded on) in Heroes.

About all it said about him in the Japanese Chaotix manual was that he was out and about, away from his hive, doing what bees do best. I would hardly say giving him a character or personality makes him a different person. Yeah they have changed his age, but they have done that with Sonic numerous times in the past, at least in the English manuals etc, does that make him a new character each time?

Wasn't he a prince in his previous incarnation?

Pretty sure that was an Archie thing.

Doesn't matter, if they wanted to, they can make him into something else entirely.

Yes it does matter, because if they change too much about him, he won't be the same character anymore! And don't go on about Team Chaotix again, because Iizuka didn't change them nearly as much as you claim he did. They are still quite clearly the same characters from Knuckles Chaotix, but retconned so that Heroes was their first canon appearance. That is the kind of change I'm able to accept: a fresh start for the character, so to speak.

Vectors change can be 100% attributed to steroids.

Aside from species and name, not much is really the same between new and old Chaotix. Vector was apparently religious and traveling around based on signs from divinity but then was retconned into a greedy, hard-boiled detective straight out of New York, Espio apparently used to be a hotheaded dick but was then turned into a serene, level-headed ninja, and Charmy was much older and far more sensitive to social graces than he is now, apparently being the one to correct Espio all the time. If I took out the names and wrote these six different personalities and archetypes down, would anyone actually call them the same characters?

Vector has had a character change from how he was originally portrayed, with him being rather spiritual in the Japanese Chaotix. But his love of music seems to still be hinted at in Heroes.

And then Shadow and Generatons confirmed it outright.

But I never thought of the Chaotix being INO characters before (aside from Charmy and the absence of Mighty/Heavy/Bomb).

Most of the time when I see a post on missed opportunities, I feels as if the person is really saying "OMG, this isn't what I personally wanted! Why do you have to fuck this shit up?! >:|"

So it's wrong to not be satisfied with mediocrity? And most of us want things that would improve the series, so it makes sense that we would be unhappy when our expectations aren't met.

That's fine, but the way a lot of people put it makes it sound like it's just not conforming to their checklist of things they want, as it were.

Generations could have had more stuff in the game, but the missed opportunities aren't as deal breaking as they sound, half the time the people who don't like the game don't like the gameplay style, so they wouldn't suddenly be impressed with more story. It's also kind of difficult to be as adventurous as people would like in a game that is almost entirely rehash.

That said, I hope they push the bar now they don't have to play it safe, or be recreating stuff.

Well the way I see it, there's a difference between something being mediocre in quality or potential and being mediocre because it didn't do what you "think it should" do. A lot of times we end up treating the latter category as if it's like the former when it's really just personal interests.

^^ These two explained it better than me, I'm all for improvement in the games. I think the modern gameplay could be improved with less automation, more 3D space to work with, a less obtainable boost, and overall smother movement.

I was thinking about the little things when I was making that post (plus it like, 3 AM when I made it). Stuff like "they should have had Classic Chaotix in Generations" .

Well what do you know, I got a new pet peeve; people would rather vilify and get rid of something they don't like instead of just finding ways to improve it. That line of thinking is the reason everybody but Sonic & Eggman is irrelevant, hell its the reason we have current writing as it is.

....And suddenly I know how CSS feels. =\

I can simultaneously agree and disagree.

As much as I am for fixing the broken as opposed to throwing out the fucking blender, there are some things that simply don't have a place in the world they're trying to create.  For example, Black Doom, a murderous alien overlord bent on the destruction of mankind and probably eats fucking puppies for breakfast (with Mephiles).

Black Doom and Mephiles shouldn't be fixed.  They should be kept far the fuck away from this franchise and never come back.

Other things, though, are extraneous and simply don't need to be around, my example being Eggman Nega.  He's just Eggman but more boring.  If he were to be fixed, what would we have?  A recolor.  Odds are, he'd just be a more sadistic Eggman, which I think everyone would either not have at all or just be instilled into the Eggman we already have.

So, while there are things I'd rather fix than do away with, not everything should fall into this category.

What's needed and what isn't is extremely subjective; a friend of mine on another forum is extremely fascinated by Eggman Nega and would love to see him used, and to say nothing of Mephiles` popularity 7 years after his game came out and despite the fact that it was a pretty bad game.

It's ultimately up to the writers to decide what to use and what not, but I'm saying don't overlook something simply because a few people love to bitch about it on the Internet.

So, why do people like Mephiles?  I mean, really?  He's a recolor, for one, and for two he's the most hair-brained fucking sadist ever.  You might argue that he's cold and calculating and that that's cool, but if he was really just fucking cold and calculating he'd just KILL FUCKING ELISE and release Iblis that way, instead of going through 15+ hours of excruciating gameplay before finally bringing the hammer down.
