Well it is this time of year again. Where wallets scream out in anguish and loved ones are abandoned due to cheap games. And I mean really cheap.

For those who do not know Steam is an online distribution platform for games on the PC. Which is ran by Valve who brought you games such as Half Life and Portal. Normally at some time during Summer and Christmas. Valve will hold a massive sale on games with games normally getting between 50-75% off. I thought I write a guide here to tell you about this years summers sale.

When is it held
The sale is held between the 12th of July and the 22nd of July at 6PM GMT

Hold off on buying games until it becomes a Daily deal, Flash deal, Community Vote or the last day

I shall explain this. At times throughout the sale certain games will gain a bigger discount than normal.

For example Skyrim is currently at time of writing has a 33% discount. But at any point during the sale they will most likely discount it further. Though by the 22nd if it has not been discounted chances are it will not be discounted at all and you should by it then.

The Daily Deal

This is the simplest one to explain. What happens here is at 6pm GMT each day the games have have got a further discount are rotated out and replaced with a brand new set of games. The twist this year is that there is an indie pack which is included in the daily deals which is a bunch of indie games you can get on the cheap.

Flash Deal

These are games that are sort of like the Daily Deal but they do not last as long. From what it seems lasts between 6-8 hours. So keep checking the website to see if a game you want gets a bigger discount.

Community Vote

Every 8 hours 3 games are put up to the vote to see what game people would like a biggest discount on. The one with the most votes gets this discount and then another 3 are put up to a vote.

Publisher Pack

These are a bunch of games from a certain publisher which are given a big discount during the sale. For example the Sega pack which includes 71 games normally costs £307.28. But during the sale this now only costs £34.99 which is a massive 89% discount.

These packs never normally get discounted further so it is normally quite sale to buy them as you will but you might want to wait until the last day just in case.

And that is the Steam Summer Sale in a Nutshell. If there is any additional questions I will try to answer them as best as I can. So enjoy the sale.

I sure wish I wasn't poor these times. So many wonderful sales, yet not even a coin to spend.

I'd totally purchase Portal 2 if I had the chance. The Portal Bundle sale is a glorious masterpiece.

Well the Daily Deal has been updated and good news for all you people who missed out on SoS. Sonic Generations is £6.79 on the daily deal. And another pick from me is the Tribes Ascend starter pack which gives you a few weapons, a permanent experience boost and some real life currency to spend in-game for about £4.

Well I can only vouch for 1 of the games on the daily deal today (15th July). And that is Saints Row the 3rd. It is a GTA style type of game but with all the boring parts of GTA4 taken out. It is a bit wacky and it does not take itself seriously so if you do not like a bit of ham then I would look at gameplay footage first. If you can afford it I would highly recommend getting the Franchise Pack which will come with all the DLC including the costumes and weapons.

So far I've racked up these:

2 copies of Portal 2
2 copies of Age of Empires 3
2 copies of GTA: Vice City
GTA: San Andreas

Hoping L4D2 goes down to $5

It was the other day as a poll vote deal, you missed it. =C

Thus far I've indulged in The Walking Dead, Dear Esther, Cave Story + and Dead Rising 2: Off The Record.

TWD is super good, waiting for a quiet uninterruptable moment to play Dear Esther. Had a quick go on Cave Story + but I've played it so many times the new soundtrack with the 2D graphics comes off as slightly seperated. I think I'll wait til I've experienced the rest of the new soundtrack with the new visual style of Cave Story 3D before I come back and enjoy +'s exclusive features.

Incidentally is it possible to use a 360 controller with Cave Story? Most games just auto-detect it but I couldn't see any options for controls at all.

Yes, I played the whole game with the PS3 pad.

Controller has to be plugged in before the game lets you swap from keyboard, though.

Wrath of The Lamb and Just Cause 2 are my only investments this year around so far. The latter is on a Flash Sale right now, cheap as shit for one of the greatest sandbox games of all time.

If you didn't pick up The Binding of Isaac while it had its Flash Sale a few days back you're sorely missing out. Go buy it while it's summer sale offer is still up. You won't be playing anything else the next few days.

I just can't get over the subject matter, the game itself looks great though.

Still waiting for the specific game I'm going for, especially since I can't afford anything else. (Civ V: G&K) Just found out that I'm able to get it for full price if I have to though.

Seems the damage done to my wallet by this sale hasn't been that bad actually, $73.05.

Assassin's Creed
Assassin's Creed Revelations
Borderlands (repurchased for Steam kicks)
Ys The Oath in Felghana
Prince of Persia Collection
The Witcher 2
Sanctum
LA Noire
Just Cause 2

That is all, I don't think I will be buying anything else. The sad thing is I probably won't play either of games until next year because of the current backlog. :(

I don't recall Steam storing DOBs. Try restarting the client.

Finally got some money

Bought the following:

-GTA Collection for Eddy
-TRAIN SIMULATOR 2012, MOTHERFUCKER
-Dungeon Defenders President's Day Suprise
-Just Cause 2
-The Binding of Isaac + OST

Can't wait to grab more stuff.

On a side note, the Train Sim has "Trains vs. Zombies" DLC. I'm completely serious right now. (Also Sim City 4 is up for voting along with two other city games)

Huh, how the hell did I miss that. Maybe I blanked it out coz it's kinda small and centered compared to the other settings so my periphiral vision just shrugged it off as being a title for the menu (like "Options") rather than an actual option.

Binding of Issac gets a lot of hype but it really doesn't look like my sorta thing at all when I watch the trailer. =C Honestly the description alone makes me "lolnope" as soon as "RPG" and "rogue-like elements" are mentioned.

Bank is currently in the red from the sales anyway lol.
