Bonus/Special Stage ideas

I've always wondered what new Special Stages could be like, half-pipe style ones have been done to death.
The orb one from S3+K should return, but obviously reimagined. But new ones?
For bonus levels, maybe Sonic Spinball-ish stages with goodies?
I really don't know about Special Stages, though I'd love a brand new iteration of Blue Sphere.

Just humor me for a second.
what
what if.
WHAT IF...
They stopped using special stages altogether, and maybe just had mini boss fights you had to do to get the emeralds?
I think that could be cool.
EDIT:
I can't tell if this is true, or sarcasm.
Anyway, I would like Special Stages to basically have a mini stage (like the Sonic Simulator), and have a time limit.
Who else liked that?
I assure you I'm being serious.
I'd rather do something more interesting than shitty minigames to get the emeralds

I enjoyed the concept of doing "laps" around courses, using your knowledge from previous laps to complete the objective effeciently, and doing the wrong thing on each lap making subsequent laps more difficult.
They did this sort of "memory test" with one of the layouts of 4 Ep2's special stages (though the rings always re-appeared so it didn't have the "collect the wrong thing this lap, it's not there next lap" element).
Also while it's not that common, I liked the Game Gear games that had normal gameplay but making heavy use of one gimmick (Sonic Chaos for example). In a Modern Sonic style game, this could be the sort of stuff we saw in Unleashed DLC and Generations Missions. Intense timed levels that are entirely made up of a single gimmick like the QTE shooters, bobsleds, grind rails, quick-stepping etc.
Sonic CD style or Sonic 3&K style.
Ooh good idea they haven't done those before.

Yeah. Those haven't been done since those games. Good idea, Law.Sonic CD style or Sonic 3&K style.

And just stop using Sonic 2 style for the love of god, it's been done so many times now.

With 2d games like Sonic 4 I think it would have been awesome if the special/bonus stages would have been like a normal Modern Sonic Unleashed/Generations boost to win stage. I think that would have been really liked-special stage speed rush. A beautiful looking special stage with kick arse 3d graphics and multipe routes like in Generations modern levels.
Oh and outlaw the half pipe stages!

This is going to sound stupid:

I agree. I've always wondered how awesome Modern Gameplay (eye candy) would be for a Special Stage. The classic Special Stages were mainly eye candy and showing off the Console's visual power, so it works.

But please I'm starting to have dreams with the half-pipes.

I had an idea, or heard an idea, I don't remember, once where the emeralds were given elemental powers by colors. To coincide with that, you accessed a special stage and you played the level, or a part of it, with a huge stage change by the element. For instance, if you're going after the red emerald, a section of the stage is now covered in fire and you fight fire-like enemies. The difficulty is increased so you still earn the emerald.
But whatevs. The idea probably sucks.
That's going back to the "Ministages with gimmicks" thing, which I do like. How about a ministage, followed by a short boss fight, then you get an Emerald? I'd go for that.

Kinda reminds me of Jade Cocoon, if you ever played it.That's going back to the "Ministages with gimmicks" thing, which I do like. How about a ministage, followed by a short boss fight, then you get an Emerald? I'd go for that.
Near the end of that game, you entered a thing called "Ordeal" and you replay the level, I think elements were added there, and you fight a boss, based on previous, friendly characters, now taken by masters of elements and have a boss fight with them.
I like it.
