Hello there. I was just reading a eurogamer article about the best game brands (in the UK) from 1996 to 2012.

Sonic came 6th.

Sonic is sixth by copies, eighth by revenue, and dates back to 1991. The game-count numbers 57. The best selling actual Sonic game is Sonic Heroes from 2004. But the best selling game featuring Sonic, however, is Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games - released in 2007 for Wii and DS.

So, this means Sonic is the 6th most sucessful brand? Hooray! Here's a picture to celebrate:

How do you guys feel about this? Is this a good thing, or a bad thing? I was quite surprised to discover that Sonic Heroes was a best selling game, but now that I think about it, everybody had that game, mainly because of it's orginal concept.

Here's the article: http://www.eurogamer...om-1996-to-2012

Let us discuss!

W-wait, that can't be right...

Edit: Well, call me stupid, because it looks like Heroes did outsell Sonic 2 (original one) in Europe.

Wait, Sonic Heroes being the best selling Sonic game on the United Kingdom?

That... Doesn't really make sense...

Oh well, good news for our blue thingy.

Well at least that might explain where their inexplicable Seaside Hill fetishism lately came from.

Just out of curiousity, who's his competition, according to the list?

It's good news for out blue thingy indeed!

I think one of the reasons Sonic Heroes was so popular, was even though it didn't sit well with the orginal fanbase, it attracted lots of new fans/buyers because of the concept of the game. I mean, honestly, controlling THREE different characters at once, each with their own ablitites? That to me is a really cool concept and really original.

And actually, I'm amazed that Sonic sold more copies than pokemon did. That's quite an achievement, given Pokemon's large appeal and them basically being one of nintendo's top hitters. AND Star Wars. That's also quite an achievement.

Here you go:

FIFA wins both in terms of copies sold and money made.
Mario is second by copies, third by revenue.
Call of Duty is third by copies, second by revenue.
The Sims is fourth by copies, fifth by revenue.
Grand Theft Auto is fifth by copies, fourth by revenue.
Sonic is sixth by copies, eighth by revenue, and dates back to 1991. But the best selling game featuring Sonic, however, is Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games.
Star Wars is seventh by copies, sixth by revenue.
Need for Speed is eighth by copies, seventh by revenue.
Lego is ninth by copies, 12th by revenue.
Pokemon is 10th by copies, 11th by revenue.

Pretty sure Heroes is actually the best selling Sonic game of all time actually.

Also Paradox, it'd be nice if you linked to the article.

Nice to know Sonic isn't completely forgotten by the masses, so this makes me smile.

Had to laugh at Heroes being the best selling Sonic game, but it does make sense, since it was the first Sonic game to properly go multiplatform across Gamecube, PS2, Xbox and PC. SEGA did do a lot of advertising for it, too. I saw online ads, magazine ads, posters and TV ads everywhere.

Hmm, yep, and Sonic X was out around that time I think (being shown on CiTV, remember old thing that?), so that probably helped as well.

Funnily enough, I have no memories of Sonic Heroes ads. Shadow ads, yes, but Heroes Ads... No...

I'm pretty sure Sonic 2 takes that title worldwide, although Heroes is 2nd.

Bear in mind this list is only starts at 1996, so Sonic 1, Sonic 2... practically all the classic Sonic games won't be included...

Ah, true.

Although I did look up the figures myself for Europe, and it's Sonic 2's 1.2m against Sonic Heroes' 1.37m. So it looks like it wins regardless there.

I do. I saw it so often on various channels that I always had the A-Team theme stuck in my head.

Here's the ad:

Couldn't find it on YouTube.

A-Team? A-Team...

Now I have images of Knuckles going "I Pity the Fool who won't give me mah Master Emerald back!"

(P.S. It won't play for me (crappy internet), is there a YouTube version? I'm and Idiot who doesn't read things through.)

I will say this: At least Sonic is at the Top 10. I wish he were in the Top 5.
Heroes... I know people who like or love Heroes, since it got some into Sonic, but it's just awful.
I can't play it for more than a half hour. It blows my mind to know that Heroes is the best selling game.
I don't mind it being that, but I just don't understand on how it can sell so well.

This makes me wonder how well the PSN release of Heroes is selling.

There's a download link there if the streaming version won't work.

Who knows, given all the advertising it got *coughnonecough*

Still, this sort of answers why only EU PSN got Heroes when it did and not NA.

Wow. Sonic Heroes actually sold nearly 6 million worldwide. I'm sorta glad. Sonic Heroes is one of my favorite Sonic games. Although I would be lying if I say I still play it now and again...
