Feminism

The sad thing is I haven't for a variety of reasons. I'll be honest, I was a bit afraid to bring it up. I mean, it's not uncommon.....especially in a male driven nerd culture, to be called out when trying to bring up the subject or even question something you see as an anti-women status quo. It's enough that anyone making a point that has to do with feminism in general is subject to a lot of scrutiny. I mean even bringing up the subject in a close group of friends can lead to conflict and general uuuhgness
But when I thought about it, I realized my own fear in broaching the subject was part of the problem. I proudly call myself a feminist and take a great interest in feminist subjects, so I'm actually feeling kind of ashamed that I put my own worry about my self image and how people would react above my beliefs. So now I am making this topic ~__~
Anyways being a female myself, I suppose I'm probably more inclined to care about the issue since it directly affects me. Probably most notably for me at least it segways into my interest in nerd culture, since like I said earlier it's a pretty predominantly male centric place and sometimes it can just be frustrating to deal with.
I think the most disturbing thing to me is the negative connotations and misinformation spread about the term. So many people consider "Feminist" to be a negative label, and it's sad to see that something that's supposed to be a force for positive change seen in this light.
However I have been seeing a lot of positives recently that have made me really optimistic. The fact that feminism and how women are presented in media like gaming has been a pretty hot topic, and it's nice to see people openly talking about this and realizing the impact stuff like this has on our culture.
I would encourage those of you who are skeptical of feminism to look into it, as I think the goals of most feminists are something that will benefit the world for both men and women.
I guess I don't know what direction to lead the discussion in, as I just got off working 9 hours and I'm basically finishing this in zombie state. I guess I could find some things to post on it later, but if anyone has any thoughts on feminism feel free to debate/share

(Sorry if this sounds like a insult to guys, not all guys are immature, or assholes)
Yet, without us. There would be no more generations

Nice topic. Guys can be assholes. They mature slower than us anyway. I think they try to lower womans self esteem to raise thereselves.

Feminism = Female supremacy? I'd like equality =) Women and Men should be treated equally.

And doesn't it just sicken you how pregnancy discrimination is the most rapidly increasing form of discrimination in the workplace?

Don't roll your eyes and ignore someone every time feminism is brought up during an issue. You might be closing off something worth seeing.

Then you are a feminist. End of story. It's surprising how many lunkheads get this wrong and confuse it to extremists.

Do you think that women should have the same rights and should be treated equally as men?

They should just call it "Gender Equality" at this point... xD

Yeah basically this. I can't even talk about stuff like this with people because of this attitude. I consider myself on the feminist side, or at least as far as males can be when comes to stuff like this, but due to social standards I can't really use the word, because it's associated with the lunacy. It's really a shame that many people (this includes both men and women) appear to think that 'feminist' is synonymous with 'bra burning lunatic bitch that hates men' when the large majority of them are really far from that. Speaking on a bare-bones level, if you think that men and women should have equal social, political, and economic rights, then you might as well consider yourself a feminist.

Pro tip: Not everyone is a sociopath. It's stupid to think that people actually care about the greater good of a certain group.

Example:
I want equal rights for everyone, everyone to be treated the same and whatnot. But yet, A woman can hit me but it's wrong for me (a man) to strike a woman?
Kind of a extreme example, but still my point

Yeah, you're right. It's difficult for a lot of people to accept.

I can't help but think the stigma around the term "feminism" might have something to do with the similarity to "racism", as though it might carry the impression that a feminist is seeking to demonstrate and or enforce matriarchal superiority.

If you want to make a difference, by all means do it. But don't try to look for a bunch of buddies that feel the same way to hide the fact that you're only trying to make your own life better (I'm not calling anyone out in particular). This is how I feel. Now please direct yourself to the signature down below.
Yeah, screw him for only trying to make his own life better. What a jerk.

That's a social misconception, a woman doesn't have the right to hit you and is subject to the law if she does.
Of course there are quite a lot of controversial things surrounding this whole issue
