Mario vs Sonic .. probably the most noticable battle in gaming history.
Without any introduction, the deal is - Two fans face off to debate who is best: Mario vs. Sonic.

In this Gamesradar interview two hardcore fans from both sides stand against their favourite gaming hero's and their franchises.

What do you think of this unusual interview with fans from both sides? Do you agree with them? Would you add something more?

Also after you'll read the news you will be able to vote which side you're up for (*caugh* for Sonic, Sonic The Hedgehog of course) .

As of recently I've stuck with Sonic because he doesn't hand me two rehashes in the same year with a straight face.

POPULAR

This is not an arguement worth having.
The two franchises are fundamentally so different that it'd be like comparing Usain Bolt and Michael Phelps. Utterly meaningless.

Does it even fucking matter anymore? Dreamcast died a decade ago. Sega doesn't make consoles anymore.

I voted for Sonic, because...well...I prefer Sonic's speedy platforming over Mario's more traditional platforming. I just like Sonic better.

Yeah, the debate is kinda pointless at this point, but I still found this fun to read through. And of course they had to take a jab at Sonic's friends. Can't have a Sonic feature/article without it! @sarcasm

Most popular, long-lasting franchises are fundamentally different from one another in some ways. It's these differences that make them stand out and garner loyal fanbases whom stick by them and praise their unique features. But this does not mean comparisons are suddenly impossible, or that having an argument to determine which one is better is futile, or that the parent companies both need to be putting out consoles for the argument to "matter." The latter is especially silly for a reason beyond the implication that most online video game debate is actually a useful endeavor of one's time; most companies don't put out consoles. Activision and EA are both just distributors. Doesn't mean there's no argument to be had about whether Call of Duty or Battlefield is better (hint: it's Call of Duty).

I know the argument is archaic, but the dismissive, almost borderline-hateful opposition to it is just as silly to me.

This debate would have meant something in the early 90's when Mario and Sonic was a strong rivary, but these days they are just two fish in a massive ocean.

Comparing Mario to Sonic is like comparing Sonic 2 to Sonic 06.

omgx like ur so gey sawnic is teh best 1 becuz he foght metal sonic and perfuct kaos and bolazrdo and eggman and etime eater and solarwefa and mario onleh fights a turtle loloo lXDXDXD stoopid mari ofan

Excuse me but we use ENGLISH here.

Well, despite they games are very different don't forget they - pretty much did the first steps in changing the game world.
The discussion and "battle" is not that bad after all. At least I had fun reading it and besides, if you're still here at this forum, it means you care for the franchise after all and what it brought into your live.
Here.. two people argue how the games changed their and other lives, what flaws they had. It's interesting.

I like both franchises. I prefer Sonic due to it's more unique style, and trying new things every game, unlike the Mario franchise with SMG2 and the NSMB series.
It's just my preference. The Sonic franchise is more unique and creative. However, without Mario, we wouldn't have Sonic. :P

I very much enjoy both and the two franchises are easily my favourites of all time.

If I had to choose between them - I prefer Sonic as a character and the series as a concept, but I prefer Mario in terms of quality of games. But I love them both very, very much so it's hard to pick unless you narrow it down to specifics.

"With the lights out, it's less dangerous, Here we-" Good times the 90's... I believe both are memorable to a good bunch of gamers, ieach in it's own way.

You told pretty much what I feel.
Sonic has the attidute and the overall more connecting feeling. It's hard for you to unrelate with this character.
Even, despite Mario at it's time was better in terms of gameplay, I still prefer Sonic after all for it's heart.
Also just look how much it inspired various people.
Mario destroys animals while Sonic rescues them and smashes robots created by evil scientist. Posted Image Whether you like it or not, the Sonic message is better than Mario.
If Sonic had the quality of Mario games and it's heart combined we would be in ultimate euphoria!

Before 2000: Sonic
After 2000: Mario
After 2010: Ma - wait, Sonic Colours and Generations were good? Too hard to choose.

Am I seriously the only one that thinks the Mario series has its fair share of crappy, annoying friends/characters? Off the top of my head:
Waluigi
Wario (I absolutely despise this stupid character)
Diddy freaking Kong (he appeared in Mario Kart, ok?)
Birdo (what the **** is this freak?)
Metal Mario (A.K.A hilariously lazy recolour)
ALL the baby characters (esp. baby daisy)

But you also have to consider that they don't appear much in the main Mario series, if at all. Sonic? Well, I'm pretty sure you know how many characters have appeared in his games.

Diddy Kong is annoying? Wat???

Anyway, I agree with the general sentiment that Mario games tend to be more technically polished in the gameplay department while Sonic games tend to be more aesthetically interesting. It allows me to enjoy each franchise roughly equally but for differing reasons, and subsequently I think they each have their own unique issues, but I am nonetheless biased enough to admit that my gut reaction to either of them disappearing would probably be to feel worse for Sonic than Mario.
