All the 2d titles are kinda boring and I just couldn't get into them. I have yet to play the Prime Series, but I'm probably gonna buy the Trilogy at some point.

Good luck with that. It's pretty hard to find below $100 nowadays. I'd say it's still worth it though

Super Metroid is everything a good Metroid game should be. The feeling of isolation, atmosphere, music, moveset, powerups, level design, lack of direction, it is just so perfect. My only gripe is that Samus' death animation looks like a commercial for hair product.

I really wish Nintendo had just let her take off the helmet at the end of Metroid and left it at that, instead of being all "look everyone she's a woman!!!1" and sexualizing her constantly. Not to mention ruining her completely in Other M... meh.

I've only played Metroid Fusion, but I thought that was fantastic (some hand-holding aside). I'd really like to see another 2D (or essentially 2D) Metroid, but I agree that Nintendo seems to have no idea how to handle Samus at the moment. Hopefully Other M killed off only the poor characterisation attempts rather than killing off the whole series.

We also had these games here which were nothing very special

Nothing special? First Metroid game on the DS! That's special enough, just because YOU didn't like doesn't mean others didn't, like myself, this was the game that got me into the series and made me want to try the other prime titles. It may be seriously linear but I liked it, like pretty much every Metroid game I've touched and the multiplayer was a serious blast to play both offline and online.

Also maybe people wanted to know more about Metroid Prime Pinball? I had that game too. It was great, had no real story to it but in short, it was the jist of the Metroid Prime 1 story with the final boss actually being Metroid Prime, using some of the locales as pinball tables and even came with a Rumble Pack for the DS which could be used in a few other games noteably Metroid Prime: hunters too which from my experience added to the overall feel and enjoyment.

I don't like Other M cause of the scene where Samus freaks out at seeing Ripley again. It's complety out of character for her to be scared of him by this point after she kicked his ass in Metroid, Metroid Prime, Metroid Prime 3, and Super Metroid.

You'd be surprised too if your most feared and hated adversary came back from a little white fluffy thing after you thought you had killed him for good.

Again she should be used to him coming back by now.

?!

Metroid's a pretty great series, with certain exceptions. I'm a relative newcomer to the series, as I didn't get into it until Prime (I had the original Metroid as a kid, but it was too difficult and impenetrable for me to make any progress, and thus I never gave a shit about it...which, honestly, is still how I feel about it). Prime still stands as the best 3D Metroid, to me; they got the atmosphere and tone pretty much perfect, with very solid gameplay on top of it. Retro Studios managed to do what I'm sure many people thought was impossible, to take a sidescroller based largely on exploration and create a 3D FPS out of it that actually respects the concepts that made the series work.

The next two Primes were also good games, but their gimmicks tend to weigh them down more than they add to the game (and I have had quite enough of Prime 2's bullshit for one lifetime, thank you very much).

The 2D games...well, I started with Fusion, which kind of made it hard to go back to the earlier ones. The original, as I said, I still can't get anywhere in, and I've never tried Metroid 2. I did make my way through Super, though; great game, a little rough in places, but mostly in ways that can be forgiven. Fusion itself, given that it was my first 2D Metroid, I wasn't especially bothered with the linearity and dialogue; it's more than I'd like, now that I'm more familiar with things, but it's not enough to make me dislike the game. Zero Mission I rented once and enjoyed it, but it's been long enough that I don't remember it in enough detail to talk about it. Probably worth picking it up and doing another run sometime...anyway. I do really enjoy the gameplay of the latter 2D Metroids; it's gone from something kind of clunky to being actually pretty damn agile, and I think it's really important in most games to be fun just in moving around, and Metroid's pretty much nailed it. The power growth is also really nice, as you start the game fairly weak and eventually become a rampaging death-tank.

Other M...fuck Other M. Haven't played it, don't plan to. Seems like it manages to get almost everything wrong. I really hope the series can recover from that fuckup.

I love Metroid. Other M is weak but I enjoy it enough for all it's flaws. It just should have been much better, and was a case of a few nice ideas ruined by terrible execution.

I love Super, but I think I kind of enjoy the flow and story of Fusion more, honestly. The whole varied space station thing, the many bosses, the added challenge, the revelation that Adam was actually the AI, and the beautiful music that plays after it. While it's very linear, it uses it to it's advantage to kick up the story and the pace effectively, which Other M fails hard at.

Prime 1 was my first and my favourite still, such a beautiful game that combines action and platforming exploration seamlessly. The sequels were pretty awesome too - I think Corruption's new twist on the formula where you explore different planets was much needed. The way Other M played was too much like Fusion while not developing enough in a meaningful way. Prime 3 at least tried something new.

I actually can't stand the original Metroid, it's too gimped for me. Metroid 2 suffers less from this, and is a really weird game that is begging for a remake. The repeating map and all the metroids to kill was unusual but needs a lot of tweaking. Zero Mission is great in terms of it's nonlinearity, but lacks in atmosphere - still a fantastic game though.

Eh, it controls like dream and all but it just didn't have the sane magic as the rest of the series. Worlds are mostly uninteresting, and multiplayer is forgetable from what I've been told.

Prime Pinball is Prime...in pinball form. It's entertaining for pinball enthusiasts I guess, I liked it.

Prime Hunters was crap. My least favorite Metroid game and I didn't coplete it because of that.. Other M wasn't really good either, but I enjoyed it. My biggest problem are the controls. It still baffles me why they didn't use the Nunchuk.

I'm a pretty new fan when it comes to this series. I started with Fusion. I loved it, so I bought Prime. I'm loving that too. The only thing I don't like is the backtracking.

Sakamoto stated that he was obsessed with giving Other M as simple of a control scheme as possible and he was completely fine with canceling the entire game if it wasn't possible.

Source: look up "the Challenge of Project M" on youtube or the Nintendo channel.

I knew it was him and he wanted to keep it simple (It was in an Iwata Asks), but I don't get how this is simpler or more intuitive than using the Nunchuk. I really don't know what was going through his head.

I just don't get Sakamoto. He's made a bunch of great games, but with Other M he made so many dumb choices.

Metroid overtook Sonic as my favorite and most cherished video game franchise shortly after I played Prime...which actually I am realizing was exactly 8 years ago today when I first played it...everything about it was just so perfect. Echoes I initially didn't like as much, but I've recently come to appreciate its challenge and intensity. Retro made up for Corruption's linearity by making the art style of each world feel authentic and awesome, to the point that I can't help but wonder if Bioshock Infinite's team took a little notice of SkyTown back in 2007...

Super Metroid is the 2nd best in the series to me as well, surpassing Echoes and Corruption, and I also love Zero Mission and Fusion as well...To me, Other M is to Metroid what Sonic 06 was to Sonic...it may seem harsh, but the gameplay is so fundamentally flawed it just doesn't seem to make sense compared to previous entries, and let's not even talk about the story, that horse has been beaten, burned, and its ashes launched into the sun.

I've never been able to get into the 2D ones, but then I've never liked the Metroidvania sub-genre of platformers. I always get so far and then I'm just lost and have no idea what to do. I couldn't even finish Fusion even though that one had a very reasonable amount of direction and help.

I really enjoyed the Metroid Prime games (though did hit a total wall and stopped playing for ages before finishing in all 3 of them, especially 2). Overall the first one is probably my favourite Metroid game, though the second was really great too.

I quite enjoyed Other M personally, probably helps that, as said, I'd only played a handful of games so Samus didn't really have much character to "destroy". Though frankly I find a Samus that suffers from PTSD upon coming face to face with the creature that killed her parents in front of her, which she was sure she had finally killed for good, far more interesting than generic badass Samus who just does everything while saying nothing.

I think the largest hurdle isn't for the series to recover so much as it is for the reputation internally at Nintendo. All the comments and queries regarding Other M pre and post launch suggest that they thought it was an amazing addition to the series as a whole and that the game had so much potential.

If they thought that highly of the game and it sold so horribly, they might relate it to a lack of interest in the series nowadays. That would be my largest concern... considering Metroid didn't really get much of a birthday celebration or even any attention at all.

*Notices topic* Hmmm. Now, I didn't start playing Metroid until I was atleast 12 or 13. I really love Super Metroid, that is probably my favorite 2D one and Metroid Fusion comes in at a close second. Now, the Metroid Prime Trilogy was pretty cool, pretty much the only FPS I like. Now Other M on the other hand, was O.K., it wasn't anything great, and it wasn't terrible either. The gameplay was fun, but I thought the story wasn't that great and the voice-acting was kind-of bad too. Now Metroid is probably my third favorite Nintendo franchise, Mario being my favorite, and Pikmin being my second favorite. Also guys, Metroid: Other E will happen one day, just watch.

I should also mention that I got Metroid 2 from the eShop, but I couldn't get into it, and for one reason only: No map. In fact, I think I looked up a map on GameFAQs and it doesn't even all link up properly, so you couldn't draw your own map either. If it had a map then it would've been fantastic.

Metroid 1 is alright. It's aged a bit, but I still like coming back to it on my 3DS. Never played Metroid 2 because I was put off by it, but I might buy it on the e-shop one day.

Super Metroid is an amazing game. They did everything right with that game, dropping you off on a barren planet, discovering new paths and secrets (sometimes by accident), the atmosphere, the music, (

) Super Metroid is a game I find little flaws in. Some things could have been improved, but for the most part it was everything I can ever ask for in a Metroid game.

Fusion was great as well. I was put off at first because of it being semi-story heavy and linear, but in the end it exceeded my expectations, and is certainly a great Metroid title that everyone should play.

Metroid V is also pretty good, I liked how they just start you off on the adventure and-oh wait what? Metroid V hasn't been made yet? And it's been 10 years since Metroid IV came out? Well what the hell's taking them so long!?

Prime is probably the best risk Nintendo ever took with a franchise. Turn a 2D Exploration shooter into an FPS Adventure. Holy shit this game was just amazing in every way. The atmosphere, the music, the gameplay, the everything! It truly is one of the gamecube's and franchise's best.

I never played Prime Hunters besides that free demo that came with the DS, (it was alright, I remember having fun fighting that Samus Clone). Never played Prime 2, and rented Prime 3. Was good, but not as good as Prime.

Other M on the other hand.....know what, not even gonna explain it, just gonna leave this here again.

A well thought out video explaining in detail why Metroid Other M is the biggest atrocity to ever grace the Metroid Franchise.

He did a follow up too

I'm not an avid Metroid fan but I do adore Prime 1, though I still have yet to play the second one and I need to obtain Prime 3 someday as well. Hunters was terrible and I never finished it, mostly due to the hand cramps it gave me.

Zero Mission was good, except for the Zero Suit part and everything after it. Fusion felt like it did what Other M was trying to do, except it didn't suck. I actually liked it a lot.

You know, wouldn't it be the other way around since Sakamoto made Fusion first? I'd say he was trying to channel Fusion in Other M, which is a shame. I really liked Adam in Fusion (and in the manga).
