Probably been done before, but what past ideas, aesthetics etc, would you like to see brought back?

For me,
  • I really love being able to choose different music for previous levels. although a pretty bad game in most people's opinions, I really loved the choice SatBK gave me to play as knuckles accompanied with his theme song. Generations did it well, with unlockable songs, and I'd love to see a return of that.
  • I would love more levels set at night, with less of a focus on casino/bingo/vegas settings XD
  • The Chao Garden is an obvious one, for obvious reasons
  • Hub worlds, again, quite an obvious one, but I know when im done with the game, i spend plenty of time exploring, and hub worlds (especially when accompanied with hidden collectables like 'SA' would be nice)
  • and Unlockable costumes or other extras (an extra ending would be ace) that make collecting all emblems/red star rings/S ranks, worthwhile in the end.
So what about you guys/gals?

Fang the Sniper

Levels being called zones

Classic character designs, at least as skins

Spindash

Multiple playable characters without different levels/genre roulette

Fang the Sniper

Mighty the Armadillo

The Super Peel-Out

The jump sound effect from the original trilogy

Tails as 2P/a follower

Elemental shields with associated powers

Fang the Sniper

Super emeralds, hyper forms (it would be cool if Super Sonic wasn't enough, even if just once. Don't think I'd want them to be a series mainstay)

Hidden Palace Zone

Rolling

Big the Cat

Checkpoint bonus stages

Special stages that aren't a tube (Blue Spheres from 3, some of the Game Gear special stages, and the UFO hunts from CD preferably)

Those rocket shoes from Triple Trouble

and did I mention Fang the Sniper?

The rolling and spindash I definitely would like a return of.

And wow, ive only just now looked up and learned what the super peel-out is. pretty cool idea :)

from what I can gather the special stages have always just been little cramped mini-game -esque levels, but it would be nice to be given a different task for each, so perhaps you would collect something that begins the bonus, carry on the level, but the mission would be to perform # number of tricks, or to kill 20 enemies in the time limit (all of this while you are still in the same stage, forging you to try other routes etc.)

Yeah, it's something that differentiates Sonic from the rest of the cast, it's faster than a spindash, and generally looks cool even if its usage is limited. It also seems like an easy thing to include, and the figure-eight running looks badass.

Nice idea. I really just want something that isn't a tube. We've had tubes for Sonic 2, Knuckles' Chaotix, Sonic Heroes, Sonic Advance, Sonic Advance 3 (to a small extent), Sonic 4 Episode II, and probably more that I don't remember. I'm just a little sick of them Posted Image

I'd like to see the series return to having serious storylines again.
I'd like to see Shade in another Sonic game.
Different characters with playstyles that suit them.

I would like to see a combination of all the best elements from Generations and 3&K to be used in future 3d Sonic games.

As mentioned above, bring back the Spindash and the ability to role. Bring back bonus stages and special stages WHICH ARE NOT HALF-PIPE. Honestly that idea has been done to death. I want Debug modes to return. Playable Tails and Knuckles almost identical to Sonic's gameplay with their respective flying and climbing abilities.

I would like to see underwater 3d levels (like the 2d underwater zones) where Sonic can fully explore the level. I am sick of dying in 3d Sonic games when Sonic falls into water.

Multiplayer, two player vs please.

I want mid zone bosses to return. New and original gimmicky bosses.

If we have to have hub worlds then they need to be interesting and not boring as shit like in Sonic 06, Unleashed and to an extent Generations hub worlds.

good point there, the main cast has such interesting powers and strengths and weaknesses that I would love to see used again in some format. I mean, who doesn't want to break a load of enemies and structures as Knuckles, or fly free, or even crack codes and solve small puzzles as Tails? - well, I know I do anyhow...

so odd as I was just thinking of this myself. What springs to my mind are games with swimming characters, such as ratchet n clank or spyro the dragon. It was nice to see not only the beauty of the level, but explore underwater. This could be done with sonic by allowing another character to explore the water sections, perhaps Tails with a mech (although the mech idea is overdone with him) or knuckles as he's more of the explorer anyway, and perhaps knux/tails could reach the end of this section and open a new pathway for sonic next time he enters the level

Do you really need mechs to explore underwater? Tails could swim underwater in Sonic 3, Sonic 4 Ep2 and Sonic CD 2011. Knuckles could still glide and clim underwater in S3&K. You should be able to play the characters with their normal moves under water. It's just that they won't be able to move quite as fast.

Remember the days of Sonic Adventure when Sega could, like, throw in something like a cheap go-kart simulator, something that really that had nothing to do with the story or gameplay, something that was "forced on you" in Sonic's campaign, and no one really gave a shit or cried foul on the development team for "wasting time" they could have spent bettering Sonic's stages? Yeah, I miss when there were more tiny little gimmicks like this to do, similar to how Mario games will utilize different games and challenges beyond the basic platforming. It provides a nice little diversion and gives the world some charm in the process.

Mainly playable characters with their own plots. That's the only thing I really miss, everything else in the series is still there that I enjoy. Otherwise I wouldn't be enjoying the series. Hmmm Sonic Adventure type levels for sonic's stages?

The Adventure style of being able to play as multiple characters in their own story, especially if the gameplay style doesn't deviate too much as is only perhaps a slight variation of Sonic's. I'd also like for there to be levels unique to characters if the first idea was brought back, as I found replaying the same stage, even if it has different leve design, slightly boring, as I don't like repeated aesthetics. Like I said, it bores me. Tails at the very least should be playable.

Another thing would be for Eggman's personality to be more like in Unleashed, where his plans and method are IMO the most sinister, especially mixed with his generally lighthearted attitude.

GASP. I NEVER WOULD HAVE GUESSED.

Seriously though, I am with you on that one.

Anyway, I have an odd little thing I'd like to see return...

Posted Image

These guys. Not necessarily the small animals themselves, but a concept introduced in Flicky and used again in Sonic 3D Blast (and kind of used in the Adventure games). Well, let me explain:

Not the mechanic where you need to collect the little critters to progress, but the idea of collecting them in regular gameplay and taking them to the end of the level for bonus points. I'm actually thinking about a 2D Sonic game in this regard. You'd have your traditional Time Bonus and Ring Bonus, but in addition, there'd be an Animal Bonus tally, where the number of small animals you pick up will add to your Total Score. Sometimes you'll come across a rare animal (Albino? Shiny? Something special) and it will be worth double the points. Collecting the same kind of animal in a row will give you extra points. Collecting all animals in a level (if possible) will double your total Animal Bonus.

So, the mechanics wouldn't be the same, but I liked it when they did something with the small animals aside from them just kind of hopping around without a purpose besides being a mini damsel in distress.

That's one thing I'd like to see return.

Also, these guys:

And throw in an ice or some other kind of shield while you're at it.

I agree with everything everyone has listed so far but I'd like to add one more: the return of the trick systems. Yeah I know, I've said this before but it still holds true, SA2 had a neat trick system that rewarded you points for, well, looking dang awesome. Since points mean next to nothing these days I think a hybrid between the trick system in the Rush series and the SA2 one would be cool and more rewarding. For those that don't recall the Rush trick system was simple by doing stunts on rails or while flying in midair you could refill your boost gauge.

Flicky was my favourite genesis game and back then i had no idea it was anything to do with Sonic. :) i do like the concept of that!

I prefer the SA2 trick system to Rush's because you have to really time your jumps right to get points, and actually do tricks, (hopping from rail to rail, hitting multiple enemmies without touching the ground, leaping of ramps at the exact right time), whereas in rush or generations, it was just mashing buttons in the air, not really skillful :/

I think the Rush/Generations trick system was more intended as a means to fill the boost gauge than purely points.

Also I would like the SA2 trick thing to return, but more expanded. Take Generations levels. You could get points for not touching the water during the rising segments in Chemical Plant. Or you could get some for hitting the first helicopter in Modern Speed Highway. Not design the levels around the trick system, but allow you to get some points for doing cool shit. Generations doesn't even give you a score count as you're playing the level.

I'd like to see level up items to return, I know Generations had the skill shops, but I always liked having to explore to find the secret items which gave some pretty cool extra abilities. I also would like to see hidden special stages come back, it's always more rewarding having to go out of your way to find the emeralds, rather than getting them after any stage or through the story because they're a plot device.

Would it be cliche to say I'd like other characters to be playable again? Because I really want other characters to be playable again. The ability to play a game that maintains a consistent set and structure while offering unique new skills, pathways, gimmicks and more on each play-through is surely something the series benefited from in the past, and one of the things that attracted me to the franchise in the first place.

As far as more frivolous things I'd like to see return, end-of-level sign posts would be nice. We saw them briefly in Sonic and the Black Knight, but for the most part they've been absent for a while now. I mean, goal rings are fine, too, but I feel sign posts could lend themselves to more macro-games like the jump-juggling thing in Sonic 3 & Knuckles. Now that the series is in 3D you can see the level's end at a greater distance, so why not award players a bonus for passing through the sign post at a certain speed? Players could run back to gain speed and then plow into it as quickly as they can, resulting in more spins and therefore more points/rings/lives/whatever spinning out of the sign. There's all sorts of fun little ways to end the level with them.

I know this has been said a lot but I'd like to see other characters playable with their own stories but not only for different gameplay and stage design but most characters have pretty good and likeable personalities and it would be nice to see them shine more in games. I'd also like to see the SA2 trick system return and also the item boxes for more exploration. Other things I'd like to see is the special stages return on the main console games instead of just handheld games and I'd like to see the spindash move come back plus also include different types of multi-player modes.

Flicky was my favourite genesis game and back then i had no idea it was anything to do with Sonic.

It wasn't; Flicky predates Sonic by 7 years, she was just reused and given a modern (heh) makeover to make the new Flicky fit in with Sonic 1.
