A Reboot.......Of The Comic Series?

Chaos Warp

Recommended Posts

Now, I as many other people, will argue that Archie Sonic is actually a pretty good read, at least nowadays. But, it really has nothing to do with the games other then the tie-in side stories (I'd call it a weird mix of Satam and game elements, in the main stories at least). So the question is, would you want the comic series rebooted?

Personally, I would. They could continue the "Mobius" Sonic stories they have going now by renaming that comic (I figure Sonic Mobius might be a decent name) and use the other comic slot (currently taken up by Sonic Universe) to reboot the "Sonic The Hedgehog" line of comics into something more game-like. Feature only game characters, and in general try to expand on the mythos of the games. If there was a game reboot as well, they could both tie in to each other, boosting sales of both.

So basically, get rid of Sonic Universe, continue the current comics under a different name, and make a shiny new, game-like Rebooted Sonic The Hedgehog comic. Tie into game reboot if appropriate.

Thoughts? Discuss!

...so, shunt the main comics into second banana status in favor of an actual Sonic comic?

Why has this not been done yet?

Hasn't the comics had several reboots already?

And what part of "alternate continuity" do people not understand with the comics? We already have the games delivering stories based on themselves, why do we need a comic to re-tell the game's plots? Redundant much?

I'd totally be down with a reboot of the comics. In all the years Archie has done Sonic, I've owned and read.....let's see.....two. Two Archie comics. And I was not a fan. I seem to recall one having a flashback about Shadow's past (it involved green aliens), and another where Sonic was on a ship with....green aliens. The Archie universe is so radically different from the game series that they have pretty much no appeal for me.

If they just started over and set the comics within the guidelines of the game universe - while still adding some creative flair to the characters and stories - I'd definitely check it out. Maybe not if they just re-told the game plots, but if they just took the game continuity and created new stories that fit well within the established universe.

I'm all up for putting the Archieverse's comic as second banana and making a comic under the title of "Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog". The current comics are a vast improvement but I really stopped caring after 176 or so and then went back and realized everything before it was pretty awful. A reboot sounds like the best option to me.

Plus, not even Sega takes advantage of their source material in the games. It's about time someone did.

Well, a reboot's about the only way they could get me to care about the comics, at this point. Too much of it is built on stuff I have no interest in. And unlike when the comic started there's plenty of material from the games to build the core of the new comic so they wouldn't have to create it almost entirely from scratch.

But at this point I couldn't ask them to reboot the comics. It'd be like asking to reboot Batman into Spiderman. It is basically its own thing.

I also believe that if the comics were to be rebooted and based off the games that they'd run out of ideas fairly quickly.

As a fan of Archie, this idea sounds very unpleasant. But I don't mind there being a new comic series for more in game twists. However, I don't see the point of retelling a plot that's already been told once. What I like about Archie is that it takes the characters and enviroment then does its own thing in its own world.

No need for reboots, just being clever. The Archie world is already pretty damn close to the games' world.

EDIT: "Sometimes things need to come to an end before their quality declines. Its not exactly the best thing that the Sonic comics have been staying the same continuity since 1993 whenever other MUCH more important franchises in the comics industry have renewed multiple times since then, right?"

Azukara, let me just tell you.

No-one likes all those renewals. If anything, Sonic's strength as a comic is that it managed to sort its shit out without having to pull reboots or Civil Wars. It grew organically (Genesis nonwithstanding, that was the first time they recently dipped into the Marvel Book of Relaunches). No-one liked One More Day. Avengers vs X-Men sucks. Etc.

There's no need to reinvent what's good. So, there's enough game material now? Well just use that from now on. Use Zones, use lore, etc. But don't kick all the work that was already done away just for that. There's no reason why the games' more recent lore can't be brought in.

It shares some elements here and there, but otherwise the entire world, mythos, and character origins are completely diffrent from the games.

Sounds nice to me. The Archie series and their fans can still get what they want yet those who are more strictly into the games can get what they want as well. Its not like they both cant keep going at the same time anyway.

I don't think so. They have tons to cover. A whole slew of games to make adaptations of (and rewrite to a better state than Sega's done!), tons of character development and background info explanation to brush over that the games also had never done, as well as new adventures that the writers would make themselves. With all that you could imagine the comic series to be a companion piece, much like Pokemon Special/Adventure is to the Pokemon games.

And they might run out of ideas over time but that isn't a bad thing. Sometimes things need to come to an end before their quality declines. Its not exactly the best thing that the Sonic comics have been staying the same continuity since 1993 whenever other MUCH more important franchises in the comics industry have renewed multiple times since then, right?

Maybe.. they'd definitely have enough material for at least 100 issues, covering the last 21 years.. not sure about the "new adventures" if the reboot is based off games, it'll have to stay that way lest fans come out saying "ah, I knew they'd turn a corner and start their own thing"

I can't really disagree with the same continuity with the series.. it's been going on since 1993 while other franchises have come and gone.. so something's got to be working!

Love the companion idea! SEGA could re-release the first game via download with new tid-bits that ties into the comic that you could purchase the very same day.. but they can only go so far unless you own the right video game unit (i.e - You'd have to own a 3DS to experience the Sonic Rush & comic tie in, a PSP to experience the Rivals tie in etc)

son, let me tell you something that Marvel and DC taught me. It's called no one should give a flying fuck about character origins.

Eggman in the games is just a mad human scientist, while Eggman in the comics was a robot from another dimension? WHO CARES? They act and look the same now. Go with that. No need to dwell on amy having had a magic ring explaining her new appearance, nor on Knuckles having been dead. Jujst move on towards new stories.

What mythos have the games brought in recently that can't be added easily to the comics? The Gaia Temples? We've got a whole period of unchronicled history in canon, have them appear there.

However, I don't see the point of retelling a plot that's already been told once.
To tell it better.

Honestly I don't think there's any Sonic game story that wouldn't be improved by an expanded and more competent retelling, except for the few where there's just nothing to work with. The Genesis games have only a few and very limited cutscenes; they can only communicate the broad strokes and only a few major events really get highlighted. From Adventure to Unleashed they focused more on storytelling, but there were issues with the writing, voice acting, animation, etc, and also necessarily being second to the gameplay affected the pacing and how much time they could spend on things that were not immediately moving things along. Colors and Generations (and Heroes) were very thinly written, barely even taking the time to tell the basics of the story in spite of having cutscenes.

To tell it better.

Well, that's always debatable. One side may think the comic does it better, the other side will say the game did it best from the start. Still if it sells, it sells. I just don't think a "reboot" is needed. Nor do I think Archie should take it up. If SEGA or whatever can license a new comic studio, then I say go for it. No need to cut into Archie's current production nor let down the fans of it by limiting the current comics for this new sake. Unless, of course, the payment's enough to allow them two have this extra series continue without limiting the current one.

I'd pass on the concept of a reboot here.

If you want to bring in a more Sega oriented story, then right off the top your dealing with more oversight from Sega and Sonic Team, more restrictions to the usage of each of the characters and even stricter policy on art direction and the like.

No writer or artist in their right mind would want to work under those conditions. It stifles creativity. Too many toes to step on.

Besides, if it did happen all we'd do is baw over various authors ruining game verse personalities. You can't theoretically ruin Archie Sonic because he's his own thing. His motivations and decisions can bend to the whim of the current author. Sega Sonic can't do that.

I don't care really, if the games can't get their stories straight, what you makes you think a comic would do any better. Archie Sonic has very little in common with Sega Sonic, outside the few characters here and there, so I don't see a point.

It could lead to something very interesting and new if SEGA still were in the console market.. Play the game while getting details from a digital comic on a compatible touch pad...

I don't care really, if the games can't get their stories straight, what you makes you think a comic would do any better.

Because the comics are primarily stories first while games are stories second. It's apples and oranges; sure they're both entertainment, but one is a different media than the other.

And mind you, the comics are doing far better than the games by virtue of only being stories. Not to say they haven't had screwy arcs before, but considering the direction they're going now they're obviously doing better.

Archie Sonic has very little in common with Sega Sonic, outside the few characters here and there, so I don't see a point.

That is false and you know it.

Archie has a hell of a lot in common with Sega Sonic aside from being an alternate continuity. Rings, Chaos Emeralds, Warp Rings, Levels and locations from the games like Station Square, Angel Island, Oil Ocean, Space Colony Ark, Death Egg, the use of Egg Pawns in a previous arc, Extreme Gear, they've used badniks in the past, even made reference to them in more recent issues prior to the current arc we're already in as Moguls workers in a casino, and then some.

And while they blend them together with elements from SatAM and a lot of their more exclusive material, the fact that I actually listed these things from the top of my head either indicates that you are either unaware of these things or flat out lying about it.

*Yawn* I don't mind a reboot after 19 years of the same story that's definitely aged and taken a completely different course than what the creators of the series had in mind, and yes I understand it's frustrating to have constant reboots but I was just making point that this one is long overdue.

And sure it shares a good bit of Segasonic stuff at this point, but at the same time it's concepts are also so radically different in premise than the norm that at times it barely resembles the actual Sonic series. Is it really too much to ask for there to be a comic where they elaborate more on what goes on in the games?

Because really, it's not like with the current worries Sonic Team has been fed about featuring story content that they're ever going to from now on, or at least not for a long while from now.

I hate to be so close minded on this, but this is a terrible idea, and it's already been mentioned why, but I'll elaborate on it.

The game universe is a very tight and constrictive thing, and there's very little room for creativity, unless you're the game writers themselves. It would just be retreading the Sonic X comic all over again, where they're stuck in some small space of between episode shenanigans, and SEGA is practically standing over their shoulder. Furthermore, if you make it canon to the games, then you have to start requiring people to buy both, and nobody wants to do that. If you don't make it canon to the games, then what's the point? To retell stories that have already been told? That's half of why the game arcs in Sonic X sucked, because you already knew what was going to happen.

Any stories what you could fashion for this game-centric comic could easily be told in the current comic. The comic's universe has all the basic elements you need. Zones, Rings, Chaos Emeralds all the characters that actually matter, and their personalities are practically identical nowadays, with the ones that are different being arguably better than the game versions (Omega immediately springs to mind). People say "oh herp derp the core concepts are too different to be used in the comic" (and they're totally not BTW), but they forget there's this neat thing called adaptation. You bring in these new elements in a way that works for the overall narrative of this canon. Or better yet, since the majority of you seem to love this "keep canons separate" nonsense, then how you about you leave these fancy new game elements right where they are. Let the game stuff stay in the games, and let the comics do what they've been doing.

TL;DR, if you like the games so much then just play them, for spark's sake.
