A lot of Sonic's sunken image came from unpolished gameplay and laughably bad "dark and edgy" storytelling.

 

And before anyone chimes in with the ol' SA2 rebuttal, I find that game to be far less dark and far more idealistic in tone than Shadow, 2K6, and their ilk ever were. Even Heroes, for all its supposed kiddie fare, was full of melodramatic, badly-written angst from Team Dark and Metal Sonic in particular. 

 

Adventure 2 casually danced around with dark story concepts without clumsily diving headlong into them like its successors did for much of the previous decade. As someone who absolutely detested the Sonic franchise's grimdark phase, games like Colors, Generations, Lost World (and to a lesser extent Unleashed) were an incredibly welcome change for me. It's as though the writers suddenly realized that making the characters "epic" was a lot less important than making them charming or lovable (not that they can't be both; they often are). 

 

In a sense, 2000s-era Sonic wrote big over-complicated stories and tended to have very underdeveloped characters to fill them with, while 2010s Sonic has - so far - written stories that may be smaller in scope, but with far more attention to detail concerning the characters' dialogue, interactions, and personalities.

back to topic, do you think Lost World is a tribute to Sonic CD?

There are many similarities as the same Badniks or the comparison between little planet with lost Hex .

On a seperate note, Ivory Lightning is now my #1 TOP Favorite wisp color power. And (if you've seen my avatar) for Obvious reasons.

If can compare this with Detective Conan and the Detective Boys. There are 2 girls in the group and they still call them self "boys". There are way more thinks like this, but this was the first thing that came in my mind.

What if they already started?

Think about this. Unleashed gave us Sonic and Eggman, the classic battle, but with Sonic as Super Sonic. That scene told us a lot about their character, and while it seems to be going off the established characters of old, there did seem to be more to those characters in detail. Then Tails was introduced as the technical mind, more so than any of the other games he's starred in. Amy was the same as usual, but less like her full-out flirting self.

With Colours, we get the interaction of Sonic and Tails and their brotherly attitude to each other. Again, there was a side to Sonic more fleshed out [the cockiness] than in any other game.

Generations had no character development at all, as, taking this reboot of character to mind, all characters except those introduced would come back in different forms.

And now we have Lost World - again emphasising both Sonic's cockiness and willingness to act before thinking, Tails' technical mind and genius tactician, and both of their brotherly attitudes to each other. Eggman also seems to have become slightly different since Unleashed. He's got himself two robotic comrades, and, as much as it seems he doesn't, he seems to have affection for them he doesn't have for his other robots. And this affection also seems to carry to prisoners. If less so. And, if Knuckles really is in this game, he might have a slight change as well.

Again, this might be me over-thinking from just that quote, but it does seem like it.
