I really like that the Egg Pawns actually look egg-shaped now. I think that's one of the reasons I didn't like them much at first; they didn't really look like Egg Pawns, compared to the Eggrobos; they were just generic roundish robots. Now for the first time in a long time Eggman has proper egg-shaped minions.

A new take on Caterkiller:

image_58571_thumb_wide930.jpg

EDIT:

Or is it one of those things from Sandopolis?

I'm pretty certain that's a Catterkiller. That looks nothing at all like a Sandworm.

How did I know that ArtFenix's comment would be trivial nitpicking? I think I might be psychic...

But anyway, I think the game looks great, the graphics really do look nice. The casino stage is very pretty.

Never touch a Kirby game.

Also...

LOOK AT THAT DEATH MACHINE

Facepalm.(

How long will you keep comparing everything to the very first game released more than 2 decades ago? Sonic 1 was the BEGINNING of the series which has evolved A LOT throughout the years. After all they've accomplished with gameplay changes, style polishing, graphics improvement, character development, world expanding etc they go back to the very first game..no, wait! Not even that! They go back to the CONCEPTS of the very first game and redesign the enemies making them cute little plastic toys ditching all their improvements made in 22 years design-wise, variety-wise and everything else-wise.

Great fucking job, sonicteam!

I'm sorry but that's degradation. And I will repeat what's been said by many people who are not so affected by HYPE: even Sonic 1 was never THAT cartoony and unrealistic. If there is anything Sonic 4 has done absolutely right - it's the enemies design. THAT was a great improvement over what was created before.

I would kindly ask you to stop trying to make me a scapegoat or something. Mind your own business. I am against the choices made for this game but I'm not against anyone on this board. You, however, try to make me a black ship here which is really not appretiated and is in fact insulting. Stop.

It looks a lot like the S3&K Sandworm. Which makes sense, since the S3&K Sandworm and Caterkiller are almost identical.

They also apparently have the same name in Japan so they're actually the same robot anyway I guess?

Arguing that Eggman's robots are 'too cute' is kinda asinine considering what kind of bots appeared in the Genesis games...

Classic badniks never had a good track record for being threatening. They were either adorable or just plain goofy.

The badniks are definitely cuter than they have ever been. The Moto Bugs have been altered, but the Slicer is the most obvious example:

I don't think the redesigns work equally well for every Badnik (the new Motobug in particular looks a little janky to me... I'm not really sure why), but I mostly like them. If their simplicity is somehow a contributing factor to the greater variety of them we're seeing in this game, I'm glad for the trade-off.

The new Egg Pawns are just plain great, though. There'd damn well better be toys of those.

No offence here, but could you please explain how making them more cute and plastic-y helps to make more variety of them in the game because I fail to see that reasoning. It makes no sense to me.

Those Worm Badniks look more like the Mystic Cave Zone worms too me.

Anyway, as an artist who pays attention to level detail in Video Games, I gotta say, the overall design of this game is the Closest to the style I always expected Sonic's World would look like.

Those are Caterkiller colored Crawltons.

Like the Jaws colored Choppers in Sonic Colors.

I do kinda agree with Artfenix(Le gasp), the badniks are a little too simplified. I don't think they looks bad, but it looks like they got beat with the kawaii stick.

Same. I like the designs, but I do feel they looked better before, when they weren't so cutesy and a bit more detailed. I do like the googley eyes on them though.

We have seen that Catakiller's design is still the same as it was in Sonic 1 already. They appear in the 3ds footage proving that this "new" badnik is Zakin "Crawlton".

I also don't see how these enemies are as you describe "plastic-y". Edited by Ben Tennyson

"Plasticky" as a criticism of what's supposed to be natural terrain is one thing, but I'm not sure what's meant to be wrong about a colourful robot looking that way.

Simpler = less work = more time to make more things? I did say somehow, though; I don't think it's actually likely.

And there are a ton of Badniks in this game. I'm pretty sure that's what he meant by variety.

1. You suppose? This is a radical revamp of the gameplay style which meant abandoning a style that had received a ton of praise from critics and arguably brought the Sonic franchise back from the dead. The fact that they'd even consider ditching the boost was surprising, nevermind everything else they've done to change up gameplay

2. This art style clearly is about more than just making the game run at 60 FPS. SEGA is intentionally going for a very classic feel with the style from the bright colors to the look of the plants and the redesigned badniks. The motobugs look like they were ripped straight from Sonic 1 concept art. SEGA has had to make concessions because of hardware limitations before (ex: Colors on the Wii) and they've never gone with a radically different art style to do so.

3. Pure speculation on your part. This time in 2010 people were saying the exact same thing about the Wisps.

4. First of all, there's a lot more to being a bold game than just being "new." Yes, there's plenty of classic level tropes being reexplored here but theyre being presented in a way that is totally fresh. The aesthetics might be inspired by old locations but these levels feel about as new as they can. Desert Ruins doesn't look anything like Sandopolis, Pyramid Cave, Dusty Desert, or Arid Sands. Also, please show me where in the history of Sonic or Mario a single zone has featured either character running through a honeycomb wonderland, a dessert paradise, and an actual desert, and Egyptian ruins.

5. Purely pessimistic speculation on your part. We know essentially nothing about the story yet except that Eggman and Sonic team up to defeat the Deadly Six and the game is rated E10.

1. Yeah I suppose, which means I agree that the new gameplay style is a fairly bold part of the game.

2. I don't know, they had the classic look down with the classic levels of Generations and they could have just translated that look to new areas. But they said they wanted to achieve 60 FPS so here we are.

3. Yeah true (still don't like the idea of wisps being recurring things BTW, they better explain why they are on Lost Hex though I doubt they will), but the Deadly Six are characters, where the wisps are just used as powerups. It's a lot harder if they are characters.

4. Yeah they are doing completely new takes on them which I do really like but I wanna see entirely new tropes to blow me away entirely. Something entirely unseen to really surprise me. That I would call bold. Maybe this game will deliver with a level we have not seen yet but we'll see.

5. With Sonic Team's track record in that regard, can you blame me for my pessimism?

I can definitely see where a few people are coming from about the robots looking like toys, but I'd personally say the same about them in the classic games, too. They basically look like something a five year old designed. A five year old who likes deadly spikes. Wow, I think I just accurately summed up Eggman in a sentence.

Of course Sonic won't kill the lady Caterkiller because he's a gentleman (◡‿◡✿)

More like she's way too awesome for some silly little hedgehog to kill her B) I'm hoping that particular robot shows up in the Wii U version too!!

On the subject of the enemies. I'd rather them make newer versions of the enemies rather than reusing the same models. I approve of these changes I've been seeing. Its all fresh, just like when we saw Sonic 4 Motobug then the Colors Motobug. They keep changing it and thats perfectly fine. I wonder if they'll throw in the Sonic 4 Ep2 enemies. Would be cool to see but I doubt it.

And isn't Eggman out of money at this point to make anything? Unless him going into the past got him rich again however he got out of the whiteworld.

But honestly the eggpawn design is cool. Its not that much different. All it is , is just a smaller shorter appendages version of the current one. With a rounder head and solid color bright colors.

Although I do wonder how they handle the bosses. I assume its you beat them but they run away and regroup assuming from that trailer.

Everything looks good, but I'm still not sold....

Sonic visuals have always seemed a little bit more granular than this game does. Its really obvious with the desert level, which uses flat yellow textures for the sandstone structures. I would expect a little more roughness for something like that. At least in a Sonic game.

Speaking of White Space, I hope Sonic asks about how he got out in this game during the Sonic & Eggman cutscenes, dropping the Doctor right in it and poking fun at him.
