Original OP:

Tell me... do I really need to go into detail about this game?

Yeah... Atari's ET. One of the worst games ever made, is it the worst game ever.... maybe... but one thing a lot of people still argue about is the urban legend.

Did Atari really bury millions of carts in a landfill site?

The rumor is, 30 years ago during the videogame crash, Atari made a deal with a garbage company to bury tons of excess stock which was worthless... this included systems, games, merchandise and... several million unsold copies of ET.

Which leads to the joke about how the game was so bad, they burried it in the desert.

And for 30 years... the truth has been burried... until now.

On Tuesday, Alamogordo's City Commission approved a deal with Canada-based film production and entertainment company Fuel Industries to excavate the Atari dump site and create a documentary surrounding the Alamogordo landfill legend.

They're going to dig up what is believed to be the ET landfill site just to see if there is indeed anything there!

Now aparently, a guy who owned a garbage company at the time claims to know where the landfil is and saw what was being dumped, so he's the 'evidence' to where they should start digging.

So... anyone wanna take bets on if they'll find anything?

I always thought the 'mass burial of carts' was a silly myth, it just seems ridiculous.

I am interested to see if they'll find anything, as unlikely as it is.

Maybe they'll find the bodies of those that worked on the 'game'...

No money on it though.

Isn't the Angry Video Game Nerd making his movie about this?

Isn't the Angry Video Game Nerd making his movie about this?

Yeah. Except that instead of the buried/crushed E.T. games, it's instead Area 51 in disguise.

I was was just about to say " I'm pretty sure that's the plot of the AVGN movie"

Eh. None of the consoles or games would be in working condition even if they did find stuff.

I'd much rather like to find out what happened to the Jewel-encrusted Sword from the Swordquest competition.

So the BBC have been in touch with Fuel Entertainment and they've confirmed that they are going ahead with this. And things just became a little silly.

They have 6 months to find something.

The CEO of Fuel Entertainment is a Mr Mike Burns.

But of course... that means... every article that is going to run this story will eventually publish something along the following lines.

"Mr Burns has 6 months to uncover the lost burial ground of ET"

And yes, there is a simpsons episode like this, where Mr Burns decides to drain Loch Ness in search of the monster... .. ... You can practically see the gifs already can't you?

Inb4 it sells for millions. If it turns out to be real, then it's an interesting piece of history in gaming.

NO

FUCKING NO!

We worked so hard to seal the evil that lies with those cartridges away...we can't let our years of work be ruined now!  If they dig up that ancient tomb, the world itself is doomed!  DOOMED I SAY

So this is basically the plot of the next Tomb Raider.

Lara Croft's Tomb Raider; The Landfill of Despair.

They are opening a terrible Pandora's Box.

Evil will spread once more on Earth, but this time there will be no hope to save us.

I always thought they secretly put copies of 06 on a rocket and blasted them to the outer reaches of space.
