Sonic after Lost World?

I'm sure many of you have theorized that Lost World is being done by the team that did Sonic Colours. I'm not entirely certain this is the case, but many things about the gameplay footage seem to point to this.

The presence of Wisps, the double jump, the way the 2D level was designed, and arguably the general atmosphere of the game and even the presence of a level based on food! Generations was presumably developed by the team that did Unleashed within the three years between Unleashed's release and its own, while the team that made the Storybook games worked on Colours. I don't think the Generations team is going to reasonably take any less than three years for their next installment. The best piece of evidence, however, is the fact that the game was said to be in development before SEGA even knew the Wii U existed. The Wii U was announced roughly five months before Generations came out, meaning the Generations team was probably busy fixing up that game.

With all of this said, I think it's okay to estimate that the third (or second, depending on whether Sochi 2014 counts) Nintendo-exclusive Sonic game will be a new game by the Unleashed/Generations team. I'd like to see their take on the formula introduced in Lost World, but a more refined version of their previous gameplay would be pretty cool too if they worked in parkour elements and rolling like Lost World uses.

I also think that if Hunnid-P was serious about working on a Sonic game, this is probably the one he was referring to.

And for the mods: If it's too soon to talk about this, please close the topic. ^^ I just feel this might fit here better than in a Lost World thread, and it's something I've been thinking about lately.

I dunno, it seems like they're trying to space out time in between Sonic's big platforming outings. I think the third game might be some sort of spinoff.  I'd like to be wrong, because I personally don't have any interest in the All-Star racing, or Mario and Sonic at the Olympics games, and can't see the next spinoff appealing to me either.

If it is another platformer, and im sure this is going to be said a hundred times, I hope they get some stones and take a risk on Sonic's friends being playable again. And I hope the parkour is here to stay, it looks too good to be a one game deal.

A game for the PS3/360 please sad.png There's still a lot of ground for new games.

Gameplay-wise, I can't say much, because I didn't played LW of course, but the parkour system can stay for the next game. Maybe something that plays like Sonic Adventure, but with the parkour habilities, for running on 90º walls, trees, etc. And no more 2D sections too, save that for a Sonic 5(by Taxman, please). And Tails/Knuckles playable. That's all I ask.

I can already tell that Sonic Lost World isn't really like a traditional Sonic game in any sense of level design, gameplay, et cetera, so I'm already looking forward to seeing the newer ideas (return of Spindash, parkour-run button, saving animals and platforming as a larger focus) in such; featuring more worldly and grounded environments, slopes, physics / acceleration, stuff like that. Sonic Adventure with a parkour-run button literally sounds like my ideal Sonic, so I look forward to that. :P

I don't mind a lot of the aesthetic decisions made for this game and I'm rather alright with those things staying (Sonic's animations, the Tornado, vibrant colors, etc). Just seeing a wider level of detail like the previous plus that combined would be best to me.

I think this should be bumped as it's after E3.

So I think it's safe to say that the 3rd game is NOT coming this year or early next year.

I could be wrong, but I think Zero Gravity was announced in August 2007 and released in Jan 2008, which is a pretty late announcement, but I kinda think this is not going to happen.

I'm honestly thinking that the 3rd IS the 2014 main game. And it might be a big one since Tomoya Ohtani is the composer of Lost World, which means Jun is either focused on Sochi, or is centered on the next main game, maybe Lost World is a very experimental game where the devs are getting a hang on Wii U and trying new ideas, and the 3rd exclusive, being likely the next main game, is the much bigger game.

And it's natural to want to be more experimental in the first attempt. Stretch your arms and to used to everything to get the true power out of it the second go.

Also Nintendo would be silly to not attempt the have gotten at least two main games as exclusives, of course it feels redundant to count Sochi as that's exclusive by default and didn't get 3 actual Sonic games that could've been on other platforms, but whatever.

I don't think there is going to be anymore Sonic games on the current-gen consoles. Especially if this next main game is going to be exclusive, the the earliest we are going to be seeing a non-Nintendo Sonic game is 2015. By then we will be long into the next console generation.

I'm hoping the game after Lost World is a continuation of what Lost World is. There could other playable characters and no 2D sections. I have no problem with the 2D sections but I rather they have the entire game be either 100% 2D or 3D.

Unleashed came out in '08 and was on the PS2 thanks to the Wii version. Might be similar with the Wii U version.

I could care less about the gameplay type as long as it's enjoyable and has replayability and speed. I just want that acid-trip Marionic style to go after SLW. I want them bring back the art direction from Unleashed/Colors/Generations. That was the best fitting style for Sonic's world that didn't look like any other franchise and was just beautiful to look at.

And I want them to start caring about stories and other Sonic characters (playing more important roles and being playable is welcomed) and I sure as hell hope they stop making Sonic games so ridiculously lighthearted and over the top cartoony and childish. Again, Unleashed-Generations is the way to go. Just make it take itself seriously when needed.

In other words, I don't really mind the new gameplay mechanics introduced in SLW but I want Sonic games to look beautiful again without ripping-off Mario or any other franchise style. And to cater the games to someone other than 4 year old children.

Oh yeah, as much as I like the wisps (more like I don't min them though), screw the wisps! Make Sonic characters playable instead and give Sonic elemental shields, maybe some new types for them!

And one last thing: STOP ABUSING THE NOSTALGIA CRAP!!! Create new level tropes, new enemies that are not classic badniks rip-offs (or just them), for God's sake stop making a Green Hill number 1000.

These are my hopes for post SLW games.

I agree with every passage, except the nostalgia one. I always like seeing cities, casinos, and green hills in Sonic games.

I'm expecting the next game to be exclusive to ultra-HD next-gen consoles, granted if the Sonic-Nintendo partnership doesn't count mainstream Sonic games as part of the deal. And by ultra-HD I mean "PS4/XBO" because the Wii U usually is the odd one out when it comes to multiplatform games (at least that's how it was with the Wii and PS360, I heard the gap between the U and PS4/One is a lot smaller this time around, so hopefully that won't be the case this time). I'm confident that the graphical artstyle for SLoW to be a one-off, so I am expecting the graphics and artstyle of Unleashed and/or Generations to return. I'm not too sure about gameplay, but considering that Sonic games usually go through a new form/variant of gameplay every new generation (DC was the leap to 3D/Adventure gameplay, multiplatform/6th-gen was a more linear variant of the Adventure gameplay with Heroes, HD/7th-gen brought the on-rails gameplay after 06), I do hope the gameplay is a refined version of SLoW, otherwise if it's the Unleashed gameplay again I will be very disappointed.

That's pretty much the only things I can predict out of the next mainstream Sonic game. Unleashed-esque graphics and artstyle (with super-detailed scenery porn all over the place) and exclusive to Ultra HD consoles with the gameplay likely being a more refined variant of SLoW's parkour gameplay.

EDIT: Almost forgot. Signs point to the series continuing rather unlikely, but I wouldn't be surprised if the next Sonic game to follow SLoW is a third episode of Sonic 4. I assume it would presumably be for XBLA and PSN once again as well as iOS and Droid devices. Not sure if it would see a Wii U eShop release, considering that it hasn't seen ports of Episode I or II.

Maybe we'll get Sonic Heroes for the Xbox live arcade?

But seriously, are there any chances of future Sonic games coming out on the Xbox or Playstation? I really don't want to have to buy a Wii U...

I imagine they would still keep the art style of Lost World to some degree, but perhaps it'll be improved and enhanced with more detailed textures and special effects (motion blur, better global illumination, etc.), or at the very least, the badniks and Egg Pawns would still be cutesy. I imagine SEGA and Sonic Team will eventually want to test the waters of PS4/XBOne while also releasing a better version of whatever game they'd make for PC after the 3-game partnership deal with Nintendo expires.

If this theory is correct, then I think we will see the Generations/Unleashed art style come back. maybe Lost World is testing ground for the new gameplay.

I think they will keep Sonic's moveset from Lost World but possibly alter the way he handles. Playable Tails would be nice too, but I'm not getting my hopes up.

Ok, well first I would like to point out that anything Sonic team makes for bone, and PS4, PC should run on Wii-U. Sega has pretty good relations with nintendo at the moment, and I have a feeling that if Sonic lost world performs well they will be sticking with nintendo for a while, however they will as always mix it up and keep developing the game and artstyle, so who knows whatll happen next

I hope that the next game is multi so everyone can play it, I'll be getting a Wii U and I don't wanna miss out on more games like I did with the good Unleashed and gens, also hoping the next anniversary title is multiplayer, so I have an excuse to get all the goodies :P

The 3rd game (which isn't known what to be yet) is still exclusive.

My thoughts are as more time passes, the more likely it will be the next main game for next year.

I originally placed bets on it being a spin-off, however they tend to be released in Spring, and I expected it to be announced at E3 if anything.

Just like how both All-Stars and Superstar Tennis were announced mid-year and out in the following Spring, and same goes for other games out in the Spring period like Secret Rings and Black Knight.

A rare time was Zero Gravity which was announced in August 2007 and out Jan 2008.

So chances are if the 3rd game is out in Spring 2014, we'd know it by now.

And most main games are out in the Fall/Winter period as SLW is.

So bets are if the year ends with nothing, it's 95% certain to be the next main game, which as per tradition by announced in Spring or Summer 2014.

I think it's the third storybook title. I think Sonic Team/Sega are just gonna get that one out of the way, it really it would make perfect sense with the exclusive deal going on at the moment with them.

I wouldn't really mind something like Sonic Generations again. Was the gameplay ever bad in the first place to change the concept? Just new levels, adding some action moments here and there (City Escape truck comes in mind) and keeping the boost system. Let the other characters be playable, heck, they look as fast as Sonic in the GBA advance series, anyway, not to say the old games, too. =/ Add to that Adventure Fields, a Chao Garden, a GOOD story and some mini-games and you have an awesome Sonic game. XD

...okay, maybe I went a lil far there and most likely something like that would never happen. It's just that I don't get why they tried to change the whole concept, what was good in Sonic Generations/Colors, instead of just improving it and adding new things.

My guess is that it will be a spinoff.

I hope so. Sonic already has three Nintendo exclusive spinoffs going for him (&Mario Olympics, Storybook, Rush) so why not? Only a set of absolute jerks would release two mainstream games exclusively.

And while SEGA may be many things, they aren't jerks.

Right guys?

Guys?

I'd be kind of glad to be wrong about this as I like both of them on one level or another - but I think that the Storybook and Rush spin-off series are probably dead at this point.  It's been four and a half years since Black Knight, and six since Rush Adventure.  So that makes one Nintendo-exclusive spin-off ongoing.  Mind you, I do think the third game probably will be a spin-off, but I won't make any prediction beyond that.  ...It might occupy a kind of hybrid position of being both a main game and a spin-off, though...

I think Sega killed Storybook and "portable Sonic" series for pretty much the same reason. As a company, they obviously want to maximize their profits while reducing development work. By linking portable releases to console ones, they reduce development time and random parents/kids don't get negative about this. By shifting Storybook effort to more normal Sonic games, they not only reduce development time for these, they get additional purchases as Sonic/platformer/whatever fans are more likely to buy a normal title while random parents/kids don't care, again.

That said, Sega did fork Sonic a little "recently" with Sonic 4. I'm not sure whether they see Sonic Jump/Dash as continuation of this effort. If they don't, we can see revival of separate portable entries in some form.

Sparing money doesn't apply to Sonic for Sega.
