Armikrog: The Spiritual Successor to The Neverhood [PC/Mac/Wii U]

Doug TenNapel, creator of Earthworm Jim™ (Interplay) and The Neverhood™ (Electronic Arts) has partnered with Pencil Test Studios, to create what some have called The Neverhood's "spiritual successor" -- a clay and puppet animated adventure game called ARMIKROG.

The founders of Pencil Test Studios, Mike Dietz and Ed Schofield (also from Earthworm Jim and The Neverhood), have assembled much of the original Neverhood development team to create a brand new game that blurs the lines between art and technology, using stop-motion animation and sculpture to bring this project to life.

The Game

Armikrog is a point and click adventure game that features all of the characteristics of TenNapel's unmistakable style:

• Quirky and lovable characters
• Unique worlds
• A compelling story
• Mind-bending puzzles
• Great animation
• Tons of clay!

The Story

Without giving too much away, Armikrog follows the adventures of a space explorer named Tommynaut and his blind alien, talking dog named Beak-Beak. They crash land on a weird planet and end up locked in a mysterious fortress called Armikrog. Then...the adventure begins!

The Music

Terry S. Taylor -- the award winning composer of The Neverhood soundtrack, will be composing and performing an entirely new original soundtrack for the game. Hooray!!!

I don't know about you guys but I fucking loved The Neverhood. I am beyond excited for this game. In the nick of time, this game just got funded with 18 hours to spare after a lengthy month of building up $900,000 on Kickstarter.

But it doesn't end there. You guys all want games for Wii U right? Well, it just so happens that this one might be making it on there. Nintendo has expressed interest in wanting the game on the Wii U. But to make that happen, the team is going to need another $50,000 within the next 18 hours in order to have enough money on hand to develop all the extra features.
 

As you may have heard, Nintendo recently contacted us to discuss the possibility of releasing Armikrog on the Wii U. Our first thought was “I wonder if anyone would want to play Armikrog on the Wii U?” Well…we think YES!!!

In order to make this happen, we’re announcing our first stretch goal of $950,000.

But wait…why are we announcing a stretch goal when we haven’t hit our initial funding goal yet? Great question! Making a Wii U version of Armikrog was not part of our original budget, but so many people have been asking for it that we feel compelled to respond. Achieving this $950,000 stretch goal will cover the additional costs of developing Armikrog on the Wii U--which will be available for download through the Nintendo eShop.

So, once the stretch goal is unlocked, what do I have to do to get a Wii U version? If you’ve already pledged to a tier (or add-on) that includes a digital download of the game…then you don’t have to do anything! The Wii U version will become an additional option next to the PC, Mac and Linux versions (which you will specify in the survey you receive after the campaign has ended). Of course, if you haven’t pledged yet—go do it now! Note: the Wii U version is a digital download only and not available as part of any physical boxed versions.

We’re really excited about this first stretch goal! Nintendo is too—they’ve even fast-tracked us so we’re now an official licensed Wii U developer! And while we’re still in the early stages of design, we’ve already been kicking around some ideas of how Armikrog might work on the Wii U. Check out the images below to see some early concepts!

But wait…there’s more!!!

Ever wonder how Tommynaut and Beak-Beak became friends? If we meet this first stretch goal, we will also create an exclusive animated short that tells the hilarious story of how Tommynaut and Beak-Beak first met. This short will be available to every backer as a digital download. How cool is that?!?

I've seen footage of the Neverhood, and I thought it was pretty awesome. I'm really hoping this manages to get funded... I'd help out, but I lack money unfortunately.

I was about to pledge $25, but then I was reminded that Kickstarter doesn't accept PayPal; only Amazon payments. They really need to fucking fix this, because this is the second time I've wanted to support something on Kickstarter and not being able to because of this. Well, I hope it reaches the goal.

The good news is that the team are planning to put up post-deadline donations that will also offer PayPal so the money will continue flowing even if the current stretch goal isn't met at first. Either way, I think it's safe to say that the Wii U version might be a lock at this point.

 Backers 18,086 with $968,378 and climbing, paypal will be added after the kickstarter ends, though they have the link setup the one at the website is not active yet. Looks like its coming to wii-U

I ended up pledged $165 for one of the final 100 'TenNapel's Sketchbook Archives' books. Was pretty gutted after missing out on it last year so I was glad to see I had another chance during this Kickstarter!

Hi Armikroggers,

Hope everyone is doing well. Just want to let you know that the PayPal option is now up and running on Armikrog.com. For a limited time (we're not sure how long yet), people who are interested in supporting Armikrog but missed out on the Kickstarter campaign or were unable to pay through Amazon can now donate and receive any of the $25 through $60 reward tiers. We also added a $70 tier, which is similar to the $75 tier but is all digital. Unfortunately, the physical reward tiers and add-ons are now closed. Our number one priority going forward is the development of Armikrog the game, and simply put, adding more physical rewards and add-ons would take too many resources away from the game.

Now, for your viewing pleasure, here's a quick video displaying the professionalism and high level of expertise we bring to our projects. For those of you who might be wondering what on earth I'm doing in the video, I'm attempting to improve animator access to one of the sets. "Animator Access" is the term we use which means "building a set so the animator can reach the puppets without having to stand on a chair and reach four and half feet across a table top for twelve hours and go home with a bad back".
