What if Sonic was to follow the Skylanders route

I remember at the beginning of the year there was a rumor going about on TSSZ (another sonic fan site) that sonic the hedgehog was going to follow the Spyro Skylanders Route.  For those of you who don't know (and I'm guessing it's about 3 of you), Spyro Skylanders is a video game franchise based on the Spyro The Dragon Intellectual Property.  It is a game series where you would buy these toys of different characters and place onto a special stand that would make the toy you just bought playable in the game.  The game I believe plays sort of like a kids version of Diablo.  You leveling up your character, give them new items (not visible on the character) and play through the many levels in order to do so.  Expansions have been added to this involving Giants and being able to mix 2 characters into 1 with the new expansion coming out called Swap Force.

The rumor was that the game would let you buy the toys you want to play.  The levels would be set around sort of Shadows The Hedgehogs way.  Not in terms of how you complete a level but more of which finish point you would go to.  For example.  I play a Green Hill Zone clone (I know overused but it's just an example so it is not really meaning much) and I have 3 paths in front of me.  I can only pick 1.  The Top 1 leads me to a volcano based level, the Middle 1 leads me to a factory level and the Bottom 1 leads me to snow level.  The gameplay was going to be the unleashed formally where of coarse there was 2D and 3D parts of the level.

So what if Sonic was going to take this route.  I personally think it would be great.  The level design would have no choice but to be non-linear, it would bring back ability to have multiple playable character without forcing people play characters they don't want and helps separate the person who is willing to spend only £50 - £500.  The only thing I personally could see going wrong with it would be that people would complain that it is too expensive.  But lets face it we all have display items that we don't touch and do nothing with at least that this you are doing something with it.

So what are your thoughts.  Would you say this is a good idea or a bad idea.  Oh and BTW.  In terms of story it was going to be a full reboot.  So feel free to reinvent a character you don't like.

Given the massive popularity of skylanders the massive expense might be a small gamble for the potential reward.

That said, I'd rather Sega didn't try to fuck us up the arse the way Spyro's fanbase have been.

Why not the Rumble U route as a Sonic Battle sequel? Could work and simplify the toy aspect as Pokemon Rumble U is doing.

Maybe have an Emerl with customizable parts ala Medabots, Swap Force like but individual parts instead of just two halfs.

I dunno.

It isn't going to happen and it's a terrible idea just for the whole practicallity of it.

Even if its not 100% Sonic related, SEGA has something planned that may be similar to Skylanders.

I think by style of rumble U he means the toys are optional and you can have everything you want in game. If SEGA were to go with the skylanders route will that mean well get to play as tails knux and Amy like we've been asking for?

I don't see why we can't have things like this without some cash-grabby, artificial RFID toy gimmick. Yes, it takes time and money to add these things to a game. But it is possible to make a profit by making a genuinely good product that people enjoy, without obliterating your dignity as a company and the identity of your franchise; this has been the case since the entertainment industry (or any industry) was a thing.

If Sega makes me buy worthless toys to play a Sonic game, I'm out.

I think it's important to note that Spyro was going through a decline that warranted him getting a reboot in the first place when people thought of him as dead, much to the dismay of his fans.

Unlike Spyro, Sonic was still standing strong even when he was at his worst. And given how much more volatile things have been for Sonic than they have been for Spyro, going the Skylander's route would probably enrage a lot more people, and I'm sure Sega/Sonic Team is fully aware of this.

Doesn't mean it'll completely stop them if they see an opportunity, but I think they can imagine what would happen if they took a gamble with it and screwed up.

Well that's not all completely true though.  Sonic Generations received many top 10 best games of 2011 when it came out and was a critical success.  But it didn't sell as many copies to make it seem like it was worth buying for people who either.  A. don't go online to look up weather it is a good game or not or B. not a fan of Sonic to begin with.

The same goes with the original Mega Man on the NES (yeah I know times have changed and that was over 25 years ago).  It was a critical but it didn't sell that many copies.  This made Capcom want to forget about Mega Man but the devs from the first decided to make the second game in there free time without being paid.

Anyway.  WOW.  You lot really don't like this idea.  Well I shouldn't be that surprised, people don't like spending money(especially on things they already own).  So I guess this just means I'm kind of the odd 1 out in this case.  I hear you guys are talking about something on the Wii U I believe you said is called Pokemon Rumble U?  While I don't own a Wii U my self from what I hear you guys talking about it is kind of what I was referring to.

Maybe I described it wrong.  You get the game and 3 characters (lets just say Sonic, Tails and knuckles for example), I hear the wii u has a RFID device so a special portal thing is unnecessary (not of mention lower the price a TON).  all 3 characters play similar with 1 or 2 differences.  Example.  Sonic can boost, homing attack, wall jump and ground stump, Tails can fly and do the tail spin (makes it easier to defeat badniks) and Knuckles can glide, climb walls and punch badniks.  Then you have the choice to buy addition characters such a Blaze who can play just like Sonic but have a slower boost but can jump higher, making tower platforming more possible with her.

This is what I'm trying to say.  You don't need the characters to complete the game, they are just there for you if want not only more out of your game but want a new way to play it.  If you just want to play as Sonic, you can.  If you want to play as Silver (I can't think of a gameplay style mind you) all you would need to do is buy him at a later date for just £7 or less if you want.

Thats why a lot of people are against it, its like on disk paid DLC, they have already had to program and include all these characters and things on the game already, the effort has already been made, so why then block it behind a paywall when its already there. its not like download DLC where you donwload the new files. if ive paid £60 for a game i want to have access to all of the game, sure making them unlockables are fine, its optional and adds replay value, but dont lock in game things off so i have to spend more money just to get the full content of what i paid for.

Disney's $120 million figure is large and I don't think it should be equated to a future potential game.

Pokemon Rumble U for example was very cheap to make and it supported the figures. It could be possible to release Sonic Adventure 3 and release Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Blaze, Shadow, etc for optional playable characters by purchasing these figures.

lolno

Sonic Jump and Sonic Dash are already designed to be cash cow spin-offs to help prop up the main series, right?  It's offensive, but if it's contained to spin-offs, it's not intolerable.

I think everyone forgets to mention that even if the game comes as a good idea and people actually like it (which chances of happening are once in a purple moon, mind you), it wouldn't be so much of a good idea overall for two reasons:

  1. Like everyone commented: It would be a huge money-grabber. I'm pretty sure all of you have gone to Walmart/Target/GameStop/whatever sells videogames and have seen the prices for the starter packs of Infinity and Skylanders. They're exaggerated. Let's not mention the stand-alone figurines, which I have seen up to 20$ each. Granted many would consider buying it, expensive game with expensive updates that only a few can buy < average game with a bigger consumer rate.
  2. The story. Even if the story was nonexistent like in Generations, the story is always linear. If OP is correct, then this doesn't stay true to the Sonic series. The story would have to be linear. Even in Shadow the Hedgehog there was only one true ending, and we all know how the fanbase went after discovering there were far more scenes.

I'm not sure it would have to be 100% linear. Maybe after a certain point, the zones would only have one exit, eventually narrowing down to a single zone at the end. Think of it like the level progression in Star Fox 64 and you'll see what I mean. The only problem would be figuring out which path was canon, which is why I would advise this system only for a game that wasn't particularly story driven.
