Sonic Lost World DLC, Why Sega make Free DLC?

I have no idea what Sega Sammy is and I'm having I hard time why you don't like the free dlc. Would you rather pay for a minute long level? Not me.

Think of it as a bonus for players who have the game I guess.

And for those who is second guessing buying this game, it might get them to finally get the game with all DLC

Have you been sent from SEGA to distract us while they take down some info?

On a serious note that last post could have been worded better. It was nonsense and almost had to be deciphered. Please slow down some it seems you're rushing your post.

Yeah, so I'm not sure anything the OP has said is actually relevant to anything. Baseless financial mumbo jumbo isn't new to this forum, so it's not as if he's the first member to post pointless finance-related stuff here. It's never really mattered before and unless it's reflecting something that's actually happening, it never will.

Besides all of that, the DLC is free as an incentive to get people on board with buying Sonic Lost World as well as strengthening their company's image for treating their customers and fans well. Aside from that, a Sonic and Zelda crossover is simply neat. It's a pretty neat incentive on it's own. That's all there is to it.

There really, really is no reason to make a case out of it.

Oh. My opinion is Sega's not good marekting strategy can deal damage to Sega Sammy's casino. SLW Free DLC isn't make ANY money, improve Sega Sammy's company image and Sonic franchise image.(many users(not Sonic fans) think Sonic is Mario's slave

And Casino and resort is REALLY LAST HOPE. Pachinko market has dropped since 2009, Amusement business is sluggish now , and Sega's development ability and marketing ability is falling.

And they acquire Phoenix seagaia resort because of Casino. They invest 1billion (over 60% of their cash and deposit)dollars to incheon and busan casino

Seriously, do you even know what you're talking about at this point???

You are shilling out horrific company advice. You honestly, honestly, think SEGA would and should just drop the video-gaming with Sonic and focus on some stupid hotel and casino!?

Maybe you should actually get some proper footing before pretentiously ranting and raving on what you perceive as their last hope, when it's really just a cheap-out to fulfill your own self-righteous goals.

I just discovered this topic and I have to say, it's pretty bewildering how much you're ranting and raving about finances, what SEGA should and shouldn't do, and for what?

Because of a free DLC stage that was just announced a little while ago, and goes to show how much SEGA still cares for it's fans still playing a game that was released for quite some time. I seriously like that attitude of SEGA that they go out of their way to try and please the fans with little bits of extra content like with Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed for PC additional characters. It's not much, but still it's something. And while I'm not the biggest fan of Zelda, this IP crossover does seem pretty amusing.

Really, just chill out man.

So with all the talk about hotels and casinos....you're proposing that SEGA makes a new Las Vegas? ;)

I think the DLC was to sort of make it up to people who felt that the game wasn't that good.

Just because noone helped you out, and I guess you may as well know since you brought it up, Sega Sammy is the company formed of a merger between Sega and Sammy (original, right? That's some Bandai Namco shit there), Sammy deals with the pachinko side and Sega deals with the amusement/arcade and console market. Basically, Sega Corp is a small company within Sega Sammy, and all the money Sega makes goes to Sega Sammy as a whole. And just for up-to-date news, Sega Sammy's stock is at 2,266Y as of 2am Eastern today. Around $22 or £13

There are two things you're failing to acknowledge, despite them being brought up numerous times -

1. Nintendo very likely covered at least some of the costs of development of the DLC

2. Releasing it for free gives people more incentive to play it, and builds consumer goodwill with a product that wasn't very well received.

Think about that before responding with "yes but pachinko sammy one bazillion dollars", please.

Also, if SEGA opened a resort, you can bet that there would be a Sonic themed area. They arent going to kill of Sonic because of this exclusivity deal.

As someone else stated above...SEGA Sammy is the parent company of SEGA!

The casino business is not really the area of SEGA the games company, Sammy deals with this via the provision of Pachinko and Pachilso machines in Japan! Yes they form the company's biggest bulk profit...purely because they are so popular over there and it is from what I can gather, a lucrative business. The lower profits they have experienced with the pachinko/pachilso machines was related to the earthquake tragedy that shook the country a few years ago (3?)! And nothing to do with SEGA the games company's marketing decisions!

As others have also said, free DLC is simply promotion and benefits all parties involved (in this case SEGA and Nintendo) by generating a buzz around their products and getting them good press etc. It also benefits the customers as they feel appreciated for their support!

And I haven't heard about SEGA opening their own casino, but if they did, I am sure they would have thought plenty about the financial implications prior to doing so. If they had done so, and doing so lead to them being in such a dire situation that they couldn't afford to give away a small piece of free DLC then that would be pretty silly!

Furthermore theme parks under SEGA brand exist and have in the past, they haven't stopped the company functioning, and in some cases I am pretty sure that although being under the SEGA brand they were ran by other companies who paid for rights to use the name.

Also, although Sonic is clearly doing fine and won't be causing SEGA financial losses anytime soon, given that the Sammy part of the business is the part that generates the biggest profit, it would be more of a concern if that part of the business was suffering great losses (as stated earlier this happened and they pulled through). So it really isn't all doom and gloom for the company :)

I think free DLC is a nice thing of companies to do. For SEGA it's a nice nod for the fans and with specific regard to this recent DLC, it also promotes the Nintendo stuff too and their ongoing collaboration! (Which through the Mario and Sonic Olympics series has generated a lot of profits for both sides)!

On top of everything else, Nintendo is REALLY pushing the eShop right now.  Giving out some free DLC that encompass not just Sonic but some of Nintendo's own family suitable franchises is a perfect way of introducing the concept of DLC so the userbase knows how it works when it's time to make a bigger deal out of it for future titles that may or may not charge for it.

Wii was very very awkward about DLC, mostly relying on in-game shops personal to each game, so makes sense that they're giving casual players "tutorial" opportunities like this.
