Unconfirmed: Sonic to get a new Sidekick, to be created by fans

Detective SSMB aka Shadzter has found something I think you'll be interested in.

 

At some point in the near future, Sega are going to launch a competition for a new character to appear in a future Sonic game which will be designed by a Sonic fan.

 

That's right, Original The Character is going to appear in the next Sonic game.

 

Michael Nagy is an artist who works for an advertising company called DDB Tribal  who have run some major campaigns for big events such as The Queens Diamond Jubilee & various big named corporate advertising campaigns.

 

And it would appear from these images which have appeared on his own website, that he has as been asked by Sega to help put together 'The Search For Sonic's Sidekick.'

 

 

Images which have been found on this companies website indicate that Sega intend to design and release an app which will run on the android and apple devices which will be used to create a new character and then race/collect rings with them throughout a virtual city using Google Street Views technology.

 

 

 

 

 

There is a leader board system also in place and what appears to be a form of collecting items?

 

The competition is going to run for at least 11 months, it will take place in several countries all around the world.

 

The following description comes from the images. 

 

 

We have created an Online game using Google Street View where you compete to become Sonic's sidekick. Your Online avatar will be in the next game that is produced for sonic. The competition will run for 11 months and move to a different city every month across the globe the cities include Tokyo, Hong Kong, Berlin, Paris, London, Cape Town, Toronto, New York, San Francisco, Rio De Janeiro and Sydney

 

The thing to notice is that it says 'next game that is produced for Sonic' so it might not be a console game but a mobile one. The website runthestreets.com isn't live yet, so don't waste time looking into it, however the images are still live on Google cache which is how they were found.

  

Also notice the font in the logo, it's the same as the font which is used on SOS & Sonic Boom logos.

 

 

 

 

 

Guys... this is potentially huge. This is potentially the biggest thing Sega have done since they launched the Dreamcast. I cannot stress how big this could be if it goes ahead. Just from the logistics alone, it's a pretty big thing if they intend to launch and maintain this as well as pick a winner.

There's always a chance they'd just be a random npc, though 'Sonic's new sidekick' implies some level of importance, I guess. I'm not seeing how this is a big deal, really. I'm actually interested in seeing who wins. Who's going to pick the winner, for that matter?

Nope, I think you have to design this character in a mobile game, and the best one will be featured in a mainstream game.

Ummm, are we sure this is not just a concept for a campaign then a completely sure thing. Companies do this all the time, an example will be the Sonic Adventure Burger King promotion that didn't happened. Maybe he just put it to be part of his portfolio.

A collaboration built on a gimmick with limited availability hardly spells out the worst fears in the fandom realized or even the biggest thing ever to happen to Sega.

The fact it's a worldwide thing, spreads over 11 months and theat they got a big professional ad agency involved would suggest it's for the next big console game. I don't see why they would go to all the fuss for a small mobile game. The app to design a character and compete is a mobile game, though.

While I do know the community has made interesting characters, this is the stupidest idea SEGA has done. It's something we never thought would happen, but it did. Oh well, it does look like a fun competition. Probably should give it a go for kicks.
