It's Morphin' Time!™

That's right! The original Rangers™ are back!

The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers are returning to the big screen in a new live action film.  Yes, Lionsgate and Saban Brands announced this morning that the Power Rangers franchise is going to be coming back to a theater near you in the not too distant future.

The television series that started the multimedia franchise was launched more than 20 years ago, and has been running in some form continuously since that time.  There have even already been two films produced, "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie" in 1995 and "Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie" in 1997.

According to the press release, "The new film franchise will re-envision the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, a group of high school kids who are infused with unique and cool super powers but must harness and use those powers as a team if they have any hope of saving the world."

There is no word in the press release about any timeline for the new film, nor how—or if—it will fit into existing Power Rangers mythology.   The press release does discuss that the fact that there is already "a deep and detailed mythology" but not more than that.

No mention is made in the press release of the classic theme to the original version of the series either.

It looks like the iteration of the Power Rangers™ that we're all familiar with from the 90's is set to make a big screen return! I loved Power Rangers™ as a kid, so I'm wondering how faithful this film will be to the original series.

Did you guys like the show back in the day? What do you think of the idea of a reboot? Will it be as campy as the original?

And I don't know about you guys, but my biggest question is if they'll change Alpha™. They'd better not!

Clearly this'll follow the shining example of Superman vs. Batman and somehow find a way to work the VR Troopers, Beetleborgs, Masked Rider, and Saban's aborted live action Sailor Moon into it.

Also, whurz mah RPM or SPD moveh.

Where's my Time Force movie?

Fuck Time Force. The original series is where it's at. tongue.png

I just want Burai and the Dragonzord to return. The Japanese cast rules! biggrin.png

As nostalgic as MMPR is, it's incredibly shallow compared to a lot of the seasons that came later, regardless I hope the movie does just make the rangers generic cookie cutter characters.

Honestly, they should just drop the Power Rangers title, base it on Jungle Fury, and make RJ: The Movie. I'd watch it. tongue.png

Aside from kids and fans, does anyone actually take the Power Rangers brand seriously? Only time I ever hear someone my age talk about Power Rangers its usually within the subject of shows they watched as kids, how bad it was and they don't how they ever watched it.

I sense a bomb on our hands here.

Honestly, I wish this was the property Platinum Dunes got a hold of while Nickelodeon handed the TMNT movie off to a studio that doesn't incite rage. Power Rangers would be a better fit for whatever the hell PD would want to do anyway.

Can't say I have much nostalgic love for Power Rangers anymore, and I'm sorta surprised and then sorta not that the American version is getting a reboot. Sorta surprised because I just wouldn't think it's a relevant property in these parts anymore, aside from nostalgia, but sorta not because... come on, now. ...I guess this'll be a thing? Can't say I have much input, though I understand Jason David Frank (the original Green/White Ranger) is still involved with the series in all its iterations, so maybe he'll make another appearance here?

Nooooope, he just had a cameo in the latest season. The last time he made an appearance or was involved with one before that was in 2004. He's too busy flaunting his meager fame and Instagramming random pictures of peppers. (Yes, really.)

Wasn't he talking with Saban not too long ago about making a PG 13 power rangers movie about the green ranger?

He was, but that never really got off the ground.

Agreed. The original series was a lot of fun even if the acting was incredibly bad at times. It wasn't easy having to adapt the stories to the stock footage they used from the Japanese series; Kyōryū Sentai Zyuranger. If the movie does well (which it probably will) then they will likely make more movies. No reason why they can't use other series like Time Force.

Oh. I just remember seeing a TV spot for one of the recent Power Rangers series a year or so ago in which he appeared and my first thought was "HE'S STILL DOING THIS SHIT?", so I just assumed he was involved throughout one way or the other. I guess he doesn't have much else going on his career though, huh?

Judging by the fact that he now has a Machinima series called "My Morphin Life" where he jumps out of planes to hit boards, I'd say not. laugh.png

Seriously? Out of all the shows they could have adapted for the big screen they choose the Power Rangers?! I seriously doubt modern day audiences give a damn about Powers Rangers, let alone take them seriously as a franchise.

I have no problem with this....none whatsoever. Just hope they find a way to get as much of the original cast on board as possible, they don't need to be the actual rangers, just cameos.

So hyped for this man, i loved the shit out of PR as a lil young'n, Mighty Morphing, its movie, Time Force, the Ninja Storm, were some of my favs, just imagining a Power Rangers movie done in the style of like the Avengers/Pacific Rim/Transformers oh man that sounds awesome.

Kids still love Power Rangers these days. Like alot. Go to a toy aisle and see the shelves flooded with all sorts of nonsense. Not to mention the nostalgia value alone, Like any person my age will give you that, Power Rangers t shirts and other collectibles are the hot stuff. I imagine this movie doing gangbusters at the box office. Amazing it took this long to even think of doing a big budget reboot.

It's not going to be the same cast that did the original Power Rangers right? If not, waste of time...

If these demigods aren't in it, then this movie is doomed to failure. Failure, I say!

Moreso if this legendary tune doesn't make it in

Sooo let me get this straight. Apart from the megazord and the suits, everything will be different. Gosh no, for things like these I'll always compare.

Who are they catering this movie to? Cannot be the fans of the first series. The new ones? They would prefer a Super Megaforce movie.

Skyler Deleon, was an extra on the show but he wasn't a Ranger.

Anyway, he's in jail for murder.
