So his is an idea that had bounced around in my head since Middle school. So I finally wrote it. Just note that this fan fic won't follow the KH storyline 100% and all the Disney worlds are replaced by different game worlds.

Sonic Kingdom Hearts

Chapter 1

A blue hedgehog with green eyes wearing a red jumpsuit, yellow shoes, white fingerless gloves, and a black and white short-sleeved jacket gasped as he immediately sat up. Sweat dripped down his forehead as he slowly closed his eyes and pressed a hand against his forehead. The images from his dream were still very fresh in his mind. He could remember how he dreamt about sinking in a dark ocean, unable to swim to the surface. Then in his dream for a brief moment he saw a flash of light before him and then he saw the face of a male white hedgehog with yellow eyes.

Just then a voice called out "Sonic, you lazy bum!"

Sonic yelped in shock before immediately spinning around, coming face to face with a female pink hedgehog with green eyes wearing a white tank top, a black collar, necklace with a single white pearl, a purple skirt, and white shoes.

"Amy, give me a break." the blue hedgehog groaned as he tiredly rubbed the back of his head.

Amy couldn't help but laugh at the hedgehog before her. She had been looking for him since they were suppose to be building a raft and it only surprised her a little when she finally found him snoozing on the beach. She could never understood why Sonic valued naps so much.

"Hey you two, I can't believe you're both slacking while I'm doing all the work." an annoyed voice said.

The two hedgehogs immediately turned around to meet the glaring gaze from a male black hedgehog with red streaks on his quills and arms with red eyes, wearing a yellow and black tank top, blue baggy pants, black gloves, and blue and white shoes. The black hedgehog let out a frustrated sigh as he dropped the boards he was carrying on his shoulder onto the sandy beach.

"Ah you shouldn't be so dark and moody, Shadow." Sonic smirked, "Sometimes you gotta learn to have some fun."

Shadow rolled his eyes before placing his hand on Sonic's forehead and pushing him. He couldn't help but smirk when the blue hedgehog unleashed a surprised yelp as he fell backwards on to the sands. He, Amy, and Sonic had been friends ever since they were little kids. While he and Sonic were born and raised on Green Hill Islands, they had no idea where Amy came from. All they knew was that they stumbled upon her one day washed up on shore on the night of the meteor shower. Ever since they found her, Shadow knew there had to be other worlds out there.

"I will get off this island one day. I will see new worlds just like those two I met ten years ago." he thought as he crossed his arms and recalled a green hawk and a purple swallow.

At that moment Shadow was awakened from his thoughts when he heard Sonic shouting about racing him to the other side of the beach. Before he could even blink the blue hedgehog had already dashed off, leaving a gust of wind and a blue streak behind him. Shadow clenched his teeth, not intending on losing to his rival before taking off in a flash as well.

Amy blinked her eyes for a few seconds, her mind trying to register that she had been left behind. When it finally dawned on her she took off running after them, shouting out for her two friends to slow down.

After only a few seconds of running Sonic and Shadow managed to reach their goal in a tie.

Sonic grumbled in annoyance at the fact he didn't beat his rival as Amy came up running to them, panting for breath.

"Why do you guys always leave me behind?" she asked as she continued to take in deep breaths in between each of her words.

Sonic only laughed at this response prompting the pink hedgehog to cross her arms in anger.

When the blue hedgehog's laughter continued to fill the air Amy couldn't help but form a small smile on her face before laughing as well. She never could stay mad at one of her closest friends.

"I think I liked you better when you were a mute." she teased as she jabbed her elbow against Sonic's arm.

Sonic grinned as he rubbed the back of his head, recalling how he didn't really talk as a child. He didn't know what convinced him to never speak when he was young, all he knew was he experienced constant waves of negative feelings that it made him to the point he was too frightened to try to speak. After his laughter calmed down his green eyes glanced over at the setting sun. He had no idea that it was so late in the day already.

"Well I guess I better finish fetching supplies. Be back in a flash and we'll sit at our usual spot." Sonic said before taking off.

"That Sonic will never change." Shadow muttered under his breath.

Amy smiled until at that moment her face turned pale as the expression of concern was painted on her face. She nervously clasped her hand around her necklace and for a moment Shadow could have swore he saw a faint light emit from her hand.

Before the black hedgehog could say anything Sonic had already dashed back holding the supplies in his arms.

"I got everything!" the blue hedgehog said with a grin, "Now come on let's go."

Without a word the trio went over to the small island with a large palm tree that curved over the oceans water. Sonic and Amy sat on the tree trunk while Shadow only simply laid his back against it with his arms folded over his chest.

"I can't wait to see what worlds lay out there. Maybe we'll even find Amy's world!" Sonic said with a hint of excitement.

Amy tapped her finger against the side of her face when she thought about her world. She had no memories of where she had come from, the earliest one being when she was washed up on the shores of Green Hill Islands ten years ago. No matter how much she tried she could never place her finger on what her home world was like, all she would be able to scrounge up was an old story that she couldn't completely remember the words and a purple swallow holding a mysterious object in her hand.

"Well we won't know until we set sail. Who knows how many worlds are out there and maybe it'll finally answer the question why out of all the worlds we ended up here." Shadow replied.

Upon hearing this Sonic raised a brow in both confusion and concern toward his friend. He knew that Shadow had always wanted to leave the island ever since he heard the tale about how a boy that once lived on the islands left and never returned. While Shadow always was intrigued by the story Sonic always felt a feeling in his heart of bitterness toward the story.

"Well we better be getting home. We'll need all the rest we can get." Amy said before sliding off of the tree trunk.

Sonic nodded his head in agreement before sliding off as well. But as he was fixing to walk away he heard the black hedgehog call out his name. He turned around to see Shadow plucking a star-shaped fruit from the palm tree before tossing it at him. Sonic ended up jumbling the fruit around in his hands before he finally managed to get a good grip on it.

"What's this for?" he asked, curious on why his friend gave him the fruit.

"Don't you remember the story about Paopu Fruit?" Shadow replied as he walked toward Sonic, "They say if two people share it their destinies become intertwined. They'll be apart of their lives no matter what."

Sonic nodded his head in response; he remembered the story but he still didn't see why Shadow tossed him one. But soon the wave of worry washed over him when he saw the black hedgehog flash a dark smirk at him.

"Come on I know you want to try it, especially with a certain pink hedgehog." Shadow said, his voice dripping with a sly tone.

At that moment Sonic's face immediately turned red both out of angry and embarrassment as he hit his friend's shoulder.

Shadow laughed before he purposely ruffled Sonic's quills to annoy him even further before walking away.

The blue hedgehog was nearly seething as he took his free-hand to fix the quills Shadow had messed up. Once he was done he glanced down at the fruit that he held in his hand. Though while he was still angry about what his friend said, apart of him was indeed curious if the legend was true.

Meanwhile, far away in another land lay a castle with white tiles and a red roof. Everything was quiet until a scream filled the air. At that moment two brothers began running through the long hallways as fast as they could. One of the brothers was a short and slightly chubby man that had blue eyes, brown hair, and a black curly-mustache, and wearing a red hat with a M on it, a red sweater, blue overalls, white gloves, and brown shoes. The second brother was much taller and thinner than the first man and he also had blue eyes, brown hair, and a black curly mustache; he had the same clothing attire except his hat and sweater was green and his hat had a L on it.

"Luigi, we need to hurry! Princess Peach is in danger!" the red-capped man exclaimed to his companion.

"I know, Mario!" Luigi replied back, his voice full of panic.

The two eventually made it to the ballroom where the saw a blonde-headed woman with blue eyes wearing a gold crown on her head, a long pink dress, white gloves that went past her elbows, and blue earrings. The princess' eyes were wide in fear as she was backing away from strange black creatures with antennas and glowing yellow eyes.

"Peach, look out!" Mario shouted as one of the creatures lunged for her.

Luckily Peach was able to dodge the attack by quickly jumping out of the way.

The red-clothed plumber clenched his teeth and without warning a bright light emitted in his right hand, startling his brother. In a few seconds the light formed into a large key that had stars for its teeth, a fire shaped neck, and green pipes connecting to a fire flower for the handle. Without any hesitation Mario charged forward and slashed his weapon at the creatures, causing the to disappear in a burst of black smoke.

Peach sighed in relief when she saw all the creatures had been slain. With a smile on her face she ran over to the plumber and embraced him.

Luigi was fixing to walk over to them until he more of the strange creatures form and lunge toward Mario and Peach.

Luigi gasped before crying out "Mario!"

But unfortunately it was already too late. Peach screamed as the creatures latched their claws onto both hers and Mario's legs. At that moment the creatures melted away into a puddle of darkness while still clinging onto their captives. Waves of darkness surrounded the two as their bodies began sinking down into the dark abyss. Luigi clenched his teeth as he watched his brother and the princess try to escape the darkness.

"Don't worry, I'll save you!" Luigi shouted.

But before the green-clothed plumber could even take a step Mario shouted "Don't come near, Luigi, or the darkness will take you too!"

Luigi clenched his teeth as he watched the two sink deeper in the darkness; the last he thing he wanted to do was to sit by and do nothing.

"Luigi, there's no time to waste! You must find the key, only it can save us all! Go to Traverse Town and seek out a echidna named Knuckles!" Mario shouted.

With that said both Peach and Mario squeezed their eyes shut as they were completely consumed by the darkness. The dark puddle remained in the room for a few moments before it finally faded away. Tears streamed down Luigi's face as he fell to his knees; his blues eyes remained glued on the spot where Mario and Peach once stood. Taking his arm he quickly wiped away his tears before standing up once again. He knew what he had to do and that was to follow his brother's directions. Without a word the plumber quickly ran out of the ballroom and went outside of the castle.

Outside was where he was finding the person he was looking for, there sleeping next to a bush was a green dinosaur with a white underbelly, wearing a red saddle on his back and brown shoes.

"Yoshi, wake up!" Luigi shouted as loud as he could.

Yoshi's eyes instantly snapped open, revealing them to be blue as he jumped off of the ground out of shock. The dinosaur shook his head frantically, trying to figure out who woke him up until he spotted Luigi.

"Luigi, why did you wake me up?" Yoshi asked as he rubbed the sleep out of one of his eyes.

"Because I need you, Yoshi. Mario and Peach have been taken and we need to go on a mission to save them. It's time to get the Gummi Ship the Toads have been working on and take off." Luigi replied in a stern tone, "We have to find the key."

The next day back at Green Hill Islands, Sonic stretched his arms as he listened to Amy list off all the supplies he needed to gather. He didn't understand why his friends wanted him to get all the supplies as soon as possible when he could easily gather them all up in a snap and have plenty of time to relax.

"So, Sonic, do you understand everything we need?" Amy asked, snapping the blue hedgehog out of his thought.

"Ah don't worry, Amy. With my speed I can easily get the job done." Sonic replied with a smirk.

Amy rolled her eyes before sitting down on a rock and placing a bag on her lap. The pink hedgehog silently reached into the bag and pulled out some needle and thread along with some blue shells.

Sonic raised a brow in interest as he sat down next to his friend and watched her carefully pierce shell with her needle, sewing them all together in a star shape.

Amy was easily able to notice Sonic watching her and explained how she was making a lucky charm since she heard that travelers usually carried charms based off the paopu fruit. She didn't want to admit it to Sonic but she actually was inspired to make one when she had a strange dream about a purple swallow standing alone on a dark beach as she stared down at the glowing blue charm in her hand.

"It's looking pretty good, Amy." Sonic said with a small smile.

Amy blushed before muttering a small thank you as she brushed some of her quills out of her face.

But before either one of them could say anything else Shadow shouted "Hey, Sonic, stop slacking and get over here! I need to talk to you about something!"

The blue hedgehog let out a frustrated sigh before he sat up and dashed over to Shadow. Once there he saw the black hedgehog giving him an annoyed glare with his arms crossed over his chest.

"Well since you want to do nothing but slack instead of following orders how about a little race just to make sure your not getting sluggish on me." Shadow said in a stern tone.

"Oh please, Shadow, I'm the fastest thing alive. Like I'm ever going to become sluggish." Sonic smirked.

The two hedgehogs said nothing as they got in the starting marks.

Shadow let out an annoyed snarl when he saw his friend refuse to start the race all because he wanted to stretch his legs first.

"So if I win I get to be captain and..." Sonic started while he was still stretching his legs.

But just then Sonic was interrupted by Shadow saying "And the winner will get to share a paopu fruit with Amy."

The blue hedgehog's mouth dropped open in shock as he stared at his friend's dark and mischievous smirk. He couldn't believe that once again the black hedgehog had brought up the subject about the legend and now was even threatening to share the fruit with Amy himself. Without even knowing it an angry snarl escaped from Sonic's mouth; all he wanted was for Shadow to drop the subject instead of constantly hanging it over his head. Without another word the two hedgehogs took off.

Amy let out a surprised yelp when she felt a strong gust of wind brush by her from the two hedgehogs dashing by her. Her eyes looked up just in time to see the blue and gold streaks the hedgehogs left behind for a few brief seconds.

The two hedgehogs continued to speed around the island till finally in the end Sonic ended up winning by a few seconds.

Sonic pumped his fist in the air while jumping around in happiness.

"Yes, that's victory for the blue blur!" Sonic proclaimed.

"Well you win, Sonic, well I'm waiting to see you share the paopu fruit with Amy now." Shadow smirked.

At that moment Sonic's face turned blood red at those words. He immediately spun around to face Shadow, trying to come up with a come back but unfortunately was unable to form any words in his mouth.

The black hedgehog couldn't help but laugh at the sight before him; he found it amusing how flustered he managed to make his friend. He snickered while he ruffled Sonic's quills, revealing that he wasn't serious about the deal with the paopu fruit and only created it to see how awkward he could make his friend feel.

Sonic grinded his teeth together in annoyance before straightening out his quills once again. In an attempt to blow off steam the blue hedgehog decided to gather up the supplies Amy had asked him for. It was only a few seconds he managed to gather up most of the supplies, all the was left was a few mushrooms that grew in a cave near the waterfall. Wasting no time Sonic dashed into the cave but instead of grabbing mushrooms like he was suppose to his green eyes began glancing around at the carvings on the cave walls.

"This place brings back memories." Sonic muttered as he ran his hand across some of the carvings.

"Wow! What is this place?" a young five year-old Amy wearing a white dress asked.

Young five-year old Sonic wearing a white shirt and red shorts nervously hid behind a huge rock.

Amy frowned as she slowly walked toward the blue hedgehog only to see him try to hide behind the rock more. Ever since she first met Sonic he hadn't uttered a single word to anyone and she didn't know why. The pink hedgehog looked around the empty cave until she spotted some rocks.

"Come on let's draw!" she said.

Sonic's eyes widened as Amy grabbed him by the wrist and dragged him over the cave wall.

The pink hedgehog hummed happily before picking up two rocks and handing one of them to Sonic.

"We'll draw each other. It'll be fun!" she said before taking the rock and began carving.

The young blue hedgehog took a moment to stare at the rock in his hand before kneeling down and drawing too. It only took a few moments for the two to finish the drawing of themselves smiling at each other.

Amy glanced over to Sonic and much to her surprise she saw a small smile on his face.

"Hey you never told me your name, I'm Amy." she introduced herself.

But much to her sadness the blue hedgehog didn't not reply. Instead his eyes glanced at the ground as he nervously rubbed his arm.

"What's the matter? Can't you talk?" Amy asked in concern.

Upon hearing this Sonic rapidly shook his head in reply, revealing that was indeed the case. He didn't dare try to look at Amy as he kept his eyes remained staring at the ground. He wished he could tell everyone that he doesn't talk all because he too frightened of the horrible emotions he had been feeling such as anger, sadness, and fear. He had no idea what caused it but only hoped they would end one day.

"Oh, well there must be some way you can tell me your name." the pink hedgehog said with a frown.

Sonic silently tapped his foot on the ground in thought until finally he got an idea. Taking a rock he wrote his name in the sand.

"Oh so your name is Sonic?" Amy asked.

The blue hedgehog rapidly nodded his head with a huge grin.

Amy remained silent for a few moments as she tapped her chin before finally smiling and replying "Hmm, I like your name, Sonic."

Sonic let out a deep sigh as he finished editing the picture he and Amy made when they were children. Now the picture showed not only just Sonic and Amy smiling at each other but also it now showed Sonic in the picture giving Amy a paopu fruit. He didn't want to admit it to Shadow but a part of him was actually interested in the idea of sharing the fruit with Amy. The blue hedgehog slowly shook his head as he stared at the picture, thinking if he suggested it to Amy that she would only laugh and consider the idea ridiculous. Deciding it was time to leave Sonic picked up the mushroom he was suppose to get and stood back up on his feet.

But before he could even take a single step, his green eyes widened and his heart raced in fear when he heard a voice behind him say "This world has been connected."

Chapter 2

Sonic's green eyes widened and his heart began to race in fear when he heard a voice say "This world has been connected."

The blue hedgehog spun around immediately and managed to spot a figure wearing a brown cloak that his away his entire body. Sonic clenched his teeth before he got his body in a fighting position; he wasn't afraid to fight the mysterious figure.

The cloaked figure said nothing as he tilted his head up a bit, the only thing that could be seen underneath his cloak was glowing green eyes.

"Hmph, you're such a fool to think you can take on me. You not even aware of all the worlds tied to the darkness, including this one." the figure sneered.

"Stop talking nonsense!" Sonic shouted in anger.

Without warning he tired to spin dash the intruder but much to his shock he ended up passing right through the figure. He blinked his eyes in confusion as his body slammed against the wall. The blue hedgehog tightly clenched his teeth together as his back fell on the ground. But when he quickly got on his feet to attack the intruder, the cloaked figure had his hand placed on his forehead. Sonic didn't understand this action until he saw darkness surround the figure's hand. He screamed in pain as the darkness wrapped around his entire body, draining every last of his energy. With in a few seconds the blue hedgehog lay slumped against the cave wall unconscious.

"Much persistence you had, but perhaps you'll do nicely for my task." the figure said.

The figure slowly kneeled down in front of the unconscious hedgehog and placed his hand on his chest. But at that moment a bright light burst forth from Sonic's chest, knocking him back. The figure hissed as he held his arm over his face in attempt to shield himself from the light.

The light shined brightly, lighting up the bright cave until finally it took the ghostly form of a male white hedgehog with yellow eyes and glowing cyan marking on his hands, wearing a black and white short-sleeved jacket, a black shirt, gray pants, a black and white-checkered wristband, and gold and yellow armor pieces on his left shoulder, feet, and his lower area of his torso surrounded by a golden aura.

"Don't you dare touch him!" the white hedgehog yelled in anger.

The cloaked figure remained silent for a few moments till finally a dark laugh came from his mouth, filling the air.

"Ah, Silver the Hedgehog, so this is where you have been. Such a surprise." the figure chuckled, "I was expecting you to have turned into a heartless."

Silver snarled as he clenched his fists; he wasn't sure who the figure was but he could sense the same darkness that came from the person who was the cause for his state coming from the mysterious figure.

"I sensed your darkness trying to touch Sonic's heart and I had to act immediately. I already lost one friend to the darkness, I refuse to let the darkness claim this heart as well." the white hedgehog said in a stern tone.

The figure narrowed his eyes as he slowly lifted up his hand and created a dark portal behind him. He couldn't help but chuckle as he slowly backed into the darkness. It did not matter to him that he did not succeed in affecting Sonic's heart since he knew with his plan not even Silver could stop him. There was also the fact he sensed another being more suitable for his plans. Either way the pieces were falling perfectly in place for him and soon he would achieve his goal.

Silver sighed in relief when he saw the portal disappear before he squeezed his eyes shut and clutched at his chest. As he did this his aura faded a bit and his form flickered in and out of existence for a few seconds.

"I've been out too long. I need to go back to him." Silver muttered to himself as his form stabilized.

Silently he turned around to look at the unconscious hedgehog. A small smile formed on his face before he turned back into a ball of light and flew back in Sonic's chest, returning to his heart once more.

Sonic groaned as he felt someone shaking him by his shoulder. He slowly opened his eyes to meet the worried gaze of his friend Amy. Without a word he slowly sat up as he rubbed his forehead, trying to remember why he passed out in the cave. When he searched his memories, the earliest thing he could remember was hearing a strange voice while the rest of his memories was a blur.

"Sonic, I can't believe you fell asleep in here! I thought something happened to you!" Amy said in a slight angry tone as she whacked his arm.

The blue hedgehog clenched his teeth in pain, discovering how sore his body was. He was confused on why his body was in such a state but no matter how hard he tried, his memories wouldn't reveal the answer to him.

"Well did you get all of the supplies before you decided to take a snooze?" the pink hedgehog said with her arms crossed.

Sonic grumbled in annoyance before handing his bag of supplies to her. He wanted to recollect his memories of how he ended up passed out in the cave but Amy's scolding wasn't helping. Finally after a few seconds of unsuccessfully remembering, Sonic decided to give up and brush off the thought. Without another word the two hedgehogs left the cave. Once outside Sonic's eyes widened when he saw the sun was already setting, leaving him to wonder how long he was unconscious.

Amy bit her lip as she walked out to the docks on sat down on the edge of it with her hand clasped around the pearl on her necklace.

"Sonic, will we be the same after this journey?" she asked.

Sonic raised a brow in confusion as he sat down next to his friend, curious on why she would ask such a thing. He didn't see why she would be worried about either of them changing from the trip. In his eyes he believed nothing could happen to make them change. In order to give a bit of reassurance he laid his hand on Amy's shoulder and rubbed it a bit.

"You worry too much, Amy. You'll see nothing's gonna change. You, me, and Shadow will still be the same friends as we always have been." Sonic smirked.

The pink hedgehog smiled as she laid her free-hand over Sonic's. His words did touch her heart but deep down she couldn't shake her feeling of dread. She especially was concerned for Shadow, worried that something horrible was going to happen to him. Unconsciously she let out a shaky thought of something happening to the black hedgehog. She would be devastated if anything happened to either of her friends. She slowly turned to Sonic to see him frowning slightly. Amy wanted to tell him what was causing her distress but the problem was not even she knew was she was experiencing those feelings. All she knew that deep down in her heart she felt like darkness as lurking at edging closer and closer with every ticking minute.

"Sonic, promise me you'll never change." she said with a smile, trying to cheer up her friend.

To relieve his friend's worries, Sonic gave Amy a wink and a thumbs up in reply. Without another word the two hedgehogs directed their attention back to the sunset, sitting in silence with nothing but the sound of the crashing waves to accompany them.

Back in the Mushroom Kingdom, Luigi was now dressed in a dark-green wrap that draped over his shoulders held together by silver chains, a black and green sweater, gold bracelets, blue and black pants, a green hat with zippers on it with a L on the front, and brown and gray shoes. He impatiently whacked the green mage staff in his hand constantly as he watch Yoshi struggle to put on his new black vest.

"So why are we dressed in these clothing and why do I have to carry a shield." Yoshi asked as he zipped up his vest.

"Our usual powers won't work in other words so we're going to have to take precautions on a journey." Luigi explained, "You won't be able to eat any enemies like you do outside our world so the shield will protect you while I'm going to use magic to make up for the fact I won't be able to use power ups. Luckily I was able to learn a few spells from Rosalina. As for the clothing it's enchanted to protect us from darkness."

The green dinosaur nodded his head in revelation, now understanding the reason. Without another word to two made their way to the Toads' workshop. Once there they saw many mushroom-like people known as toads preparing a red and yellow space ship. One toad with a white and red dotted mushroom top and his head, wearing a yellow apron walked up to Yoshi and Luigi.

"The preparations are complete, Luigi! The gummi ship is all set for take off! You even got a robot ignition system!" the toad proclaimed.

Luigi was confused by this until he saw the gummi ship's cockpit open up and a small silver robot with green eyes jump out of it.

The robot walked up to the plumber and shoot his hand before saying "Greetings, my name is Clank. I will serve as your guide when traveling to worlds. I'm quite familiar with the lanes between worlds after my own world was consumed my darkness. I escaped but I do not know of the fate of my companion."

Upon recalling his companion Clank frowned a bit. He never saw anyone sign of his friend when he ended up waking up in the Mushroom Kingdom. As much as it pained him, the small robot was convinced that his friend was among the victims that were consumed by the darkness since he himself was barely able to escape it, leaving him with little hope that by some miracle his friend managed to escape as well.

Clank was immediately snapped out of his thoughts when he heard Luigi say "Well nice to meet you, Clank. I'm Luigi and this is Yoshi."

Yoshi cheered happily as he jumped up and down a bit, greeting the small robot in his own way.

Clank nodded his head in response before getting back in the gummi ship once more. Everyone knew that Luigi and Yoshi had no time to talk, not when they had to go on a quest to find the missing Princess Peach and Mario. Not wanting to waste anymore time the plumber and the dinosaur got in the gummi ship and sat down in their respective seats. Luigi said nothing as he grasped ahold of the steering wheel and began flipping up the power switches, causing the ship's engine to come to life with a loud vroom.

"Here we go!" the plumber shouted as he slammed his hand on the large red button.

With that the gummi ship sped out of the garage and took to the skies, beginning its long journey to the world of Traverse Town to seek out the key and the one known as Knuckles.

Amy sat up gasping in her bed with sweat dripping down her face. Her green eyes were wide in fear as she looked out of her bedroom window to see a storm brewing over the island. Her heart was pounding in fear and her body trembled, as if she had seen a dark storm in the past. But at that moment her attention was directed toward Shadow who was headed to the docks; she didn't even had to guess to know he was going there so he could take his boat to the island. Worried about her friend going out in the storm, Amy silently climbed through her window and jumped down to the ground before cautiously following the black hedgehog.

"Shadow, what's going on?" Amy asked out of worry.

Upon hearing this Shadow immediately stopped in his tracks and slowly turned around.

The pink hedgehog gasped in fear when she saw her friend's cold and emotionless red eyes. She had never seen him in a such trance-like state. Her fears grew even more when she saw the black hedgehog walk toward her in an intimidating manner.

"The door needs to be opened." Shadow said in a dark tone as he summoned a strange giant key in his hand with a silver neck and teeth while the handle was gold.

Amy couldn't help but release the frightened and surprised yelp when she saw the weapon appearing in Shadow's hand. She knew at that moment she had to run or something awful would happen. Without any hesitation the pink hedgehog took off, but unfortunately she wasn't fast enough. Amy cried out when she felt Shadow grab her by the arm and pull her toward him.

Shadow said nothing as he raised his weapon and pointed it toward Amy's chest.

"I'm sorry, Amy, but this is the only way he'll help me escape this island." he whispered before plunging the giant key into her chest.

Amy gasped out in pain as her a bright light began to glow where she had been stabbed.

Sonic groaned as he sat up from his bed. He stretched his arms a bit, trying to pop his bones until he heard the sound of loud thunder. This caused him to notice Shadow carrying an unconscious Amy in his arms to the boats.

"Shadow and Amy?! Why was Amy unconscious and why is Shadow going out to the islands with that awful storm?!" Sonic muttered to himself.

The blue hedgehog clenched his teeth as he watched the boat containing his two friends sail farther and farther away. Despite the dangers of the storm, Sonic immediately jumped out of his window and headed for the docks. All he knew was he needed to rescue his friends and bring back them safety. It didn't take long for him to reach the island in his boat. When he reached the docks, the blue hedgehog stared up in horror when he saw a large orb of darkness in the sky. He didn't know what it was but he did know that it couldn't be good.

Sonic was fixing to take off until he saw black creatures with antennae and glowing yellow eyes emerging from the ground. He let out a yelp when a couple were clawing at his legs, trying to grab hold of them. The blue hedgehog held his breath as he quickly used his spin dash in and attempt to save himself. Much to his disappoint the attack did not affect the creatures but it did give him the boost he needed to get away from the strange creatures.

"I need to find Shadow and Amy now!" Sonic thought to himself as he continued running from the strange creatures.

As he continued running Sonic saw that only more and more strange creatures continued emerging from the ground. Sonic continued to run as fast as he could, evading the creatures until finally he managed to spot Shadow standing alone at their usually meeting place. Relief washed over the blue hedgehog as he dashed over to his friend.

"Shadow, we need to get Amy and out of here! Why did you bring her here anyway?" Sonic yelled.

But Shadow said nothing as he slowly turned to face Sonic. Instead a dark smirk formed on his face as darkness appeared beneath his feet.

The blue hedgehog stared in shock when he saw his friend not react to the darkness form around his feet and instead only silently held out his hand.

"What's the matter, Sonic? Afraid of the dark?" Shadow smirked, his voice full of intimidation.

Sonic clenched his teeth before running over to Shadow but because of that his feet was grabbed by the darkness. His hearts began racing as the darkness began reaching up and encompassing his entire body. He struggled and grabbed at the air in an attempt to grab anything to save himself but no matter what he did he continued to sink into the darkness. Sonic's green eyes glanced over at Shadow only to see the dark smirk still on his face as he sunk into the darkness as well with his hand still held out. Unsure what else to do Sonic grabbed a hold of Shadow's hand before the darkness engulfed both of them.

The blue hedgehog clasped his hands around his throat as he fell in the darkness; his lungs begging for oxygen but much to his prevail he was unable to get any. His green eyes darted around as he kick his legs frantically, fearing that he wouldn't be able to escape the darkness. Just when he thought he would lose all hope, a bright light began glowing in his chest. Due to how bright the light was, Sonic was forced to squeeze his eyes shut. By the time he opened up his eyes he found himself back on the island and in his hand was the giant key Shadow had earlier.

"What the heck is this thing?" Sonic muttered to himself.

At that moment the blue hedgehog quickly got his answer when he heard the word "keyblade" constantly echo throughout his mind. Sonic raised a brow in confusion, wondering how he knew the name of the weapon until he saw the creatures that were perusing him earlier surrounding him. Immediately Sonic narrowed his eyes as he got into a fighting position and his hand clenched tightly around the keyblade's handle. Without any hesitation he charge forward and slashed his keyblade at the creatures. Sonic smirked as he watched the Heartless burst into dark smoke upon their destruction, feeling as if sleeping instincts had been awakened in him.

Now with a way to defend Sonic immediately begin to search for Amy. He knew there was only one place on the island he hadn't searched yet and that was the secret cave. The blue hedgehog took in deep and rapid breaths as he continued to slash through the creatures as he ran. He managed to reach the cave in a few seconds and there standing before a large brown door was none other than Amy. Sonic grinned in relief but before he could take a step toward her he stopped and hesitated, remembering how Shadow was when he found him.

"Amy?" he spoke up after a few seconds of silence.

The pink hedgehog slowly turned around, revealing the dazed look on her face and her pupiless eyes.

"S-S-Son-ni-nic." Amy slowly said in a weak tone, her voice devoid of any emotion.

Before anyone could say anything the door Amy was standing in front of burst open, unleashing waves of darkness. Sonic held his arms in front of the face to shield his face when he felt the force of the darkness trying to knock him back. His green eyes widened in fear when he saw the darkness had knocked Amy off of her feet and she was sent flying toward him. Thinking fast Sonic immediately opened up his arms, ready to catch her. But as soon the pink hedgehog made contact with his arms she vanished into thin air. The blue hedgehog frantically shook his head around, trying to figure out what happened to his friend, unaware of the small orb of light that entered his chest.

The waves of darkness grew stronger, to point not even Sonic could hold his ground anymore. He unleashed a loud yelp as he was knocked off of his feet and temporarily passed out as his body was sent flying out of the cave. Sonic groaned as he regained his senses a few minutes later, pushing his body onto his hands and knees. He blinked his eyes a few times as his eye-sight slowly changed from blurry to clear. Once his sight was clear, the blue hedgehog nearly stopped breathing when he saw he was on a small piece of land with the orb of darkness still floating high in the sky.

"The island." Sonic muttered quietly to himself, knowing that the piece of land he was on was all that was left.

But at that moment the blue hedgehog's ears perked up when he heard a loud smash. His eyes snapped open to see a giant black creature with glowing yellow eyes, many antennae, and a giant heart-shaped hole in its chest. The creature let out a roar as it tried to smash its fist down on the hedgehog but fortunately thank to his speed Sonic was able to avoid the attack. Sonic lowered his brow as he held onto his keyblade with both hands.

"Buddy you messed with the wrong hedgehog!" he snarled.

Without another word Sonic took off in a flash, speeding toward the giant creature. A smirk grew on his face as he jumped on the creature's arm and ran toward his head, dragging his keyblade began him to create large cuts. The creature roared in pain as it tried to swat Sonic of its arms but the blue hedgehog was too fast. Sonic continued running around on the creature, creating many gashes and cuts with his weapon. When the creature tried to slam its hand down on him, Sonic knew it was time for the final blow. Using all the strength he could muster, Sonic jumped up, held his keyblade over his head and began to start spinning. He yelled out a he spun toward the creature's head, the keyblade allowing him to create a giant hole in its head.

Sonic grinned in victory as he landed on the ground and watched the giant creature collapse on the ground. But his grin immediately vanished when he saw the orb of darkness in the sky immediately started to suck them in. Sonic desperately grabbed onto a branch sticking out of the ground while his body was lifted off of the ground. He fingers tightened around the branch as he watched the large creature get sucked into the orb of darkness. The blue hedgehog clenched his teeth as he desperately tried to keep his grip on the branch, but unfortunately his strength failed. Sonic screamed as his hand was slipped and he was sucked into the darkness, unaware what was going to happen to him.

Chapter 3

"Luigi, another star is going out!" Yoshi exclaimed as he pointed his finger up at the night sky.

Luigi gasped as he watched before his very eyes a bright star flicker out of existence. The two had finally made it to their destination of Traverse Town which was small town with many neon lights covering the building signs and a endless night sky. Luigi frowned before he directed his attention back on the streets of Traverse Town; he knew time was of the essence and that he and Yoshi needed to find the key as soon as possible.

"Come on we can't stand around here. Let's go find that key." the green-clad plumber said.

He was fixing to take a few steps until he noticed the dinosaur staring at one of the dark alley ways. A frustrated sigh escaped his mouth before he walked over to Yoshi, grabbed him by the arm and dragged him away. But because of this he had failed to see an unconscious blue hedgehog laying slumped against a large crate in the alley way.

Sonic groaned as he slowly blinked open his eyes, finding himself staring up at the starry night sky. Because his mind was in so much of a daze at first he thought the encounter with the strange creatures was only a dream until his vision cleared up and he realized he was in an environment he did not recognize. The blue hedgehog let out a small gasp before he immediately jumped up on his feet. Panic flooded through his mind as he ran out of the alley, wondering what happened to his friends and how he managed to arrive in the strange town.

When Sonic made it to the center of the town his mouth dropped open when he saw the neon-lit signs of Traverse town. Silently he raised a brow in confusion as he scratched his head.

"Did I actually make it to a different world?" he muttered to himself.

But before he could travel deeper into his thoughts, the black creatures that attacked him back on Green Hill Islands began rising from the ground. Sonic clenched his teeth as he summoned the keyblade in his hand, finding it hard to believe that the creatures were in Traverse Town as well. The blue hedgehog was fixing to attack until he heard a scream. He lifted up his head to see a small pig running from creatures that had armor on their bodies and the symbol of a black heart with barbwire crisscrossed over it. The pig tried to run with all his might but unfortunately he tripped, allowing the creatures to catch him.

Sonic watched in horror as one of the creatures plunged its claws into the pig's chest and pulled out a heart. The heart floated up to the sky before being engulfed in a cloud of darkness, transforming into one of the creatures while the pig's body faded from existence.

"Th-they just took that guy's heart! What are these things?" Sonic exclaimed as the creatures began to near him.

But before he could attack the creatures, a blast of light hit the creatures, causing them to disappear in a puff of smoke.

"Are you crazy? What are you doing out here, don't you know the heartless feed on lost prey?" a young voice shouted.

Sonic quickly turned around to spot a male two-tailed fox with blue eyes, wearing a white shirt, blue pants, goggles on his forehead, and black and gray boots holding a bright yellow blaster in his hand. The blue hedgehog was confused until he saw the fox grunt in frustration before grabbing him by the arm and pulling him inside of a accessory shop.

The yellow fox sighed in relief before placing his blaster on the cashier counter and walking behind it.

"You know now that I think about it I've never seen you here before. That must mean you're from a world that was consumed by darkness." the fox commented.

Sonic's eyes widened in shock before he exclaimed "How did you know that?"

"Because the same happened to me... or at least to my parents." the fox replied, taking a pause to correct himself.

The blue hedgehog listened with interest as the fox explained to him about how Traverse Town was a place where people lucky enough to escape the darkness that consumed their worlds ended up. He theorized people ended up there because Traverse Town itself managed to escape the darkness but it did end up losing half of the world in the process, leaving the world incomplete.

"Ah how stupid of me, I forgot to tell you my name. I'm Miles Prower but everyone calls me Tails." the yellow fox greeted.

Sonic smirked before greeting back "Nice to meet ya, Tails. I'm Sonic, Sonic the Hedgehog!"

"So exactly why were you standing out in the streets trying to go against the heartless?" Tails asked as he grabbed a wrench and started adjusting his blaster.

The blue hedgehog raised a brow upon learning the name of the mysterious creatures he had been encountering. He didn't understand why they were called heartless and why the only thing that managed to hurt them was light or his keyblade. He let out a quiet sigh, many questions rushing through his mind at his current situation as he summoned his keyblade to study the mysterious weapon a bit more.

When Tails saw Sonic summon the keyblade he let out a surprised yell and threw back the wrench he was holding.

Before Sonic could ask why the yellow fox was so shocked, the door to the accessory shop swung open. He immediately tried to turn around to see the face of the new intruder but this only caused him to receive a punch to the face. Sonic stumbled backwards from the punch before crashing on the ground unconscious.

Standing over the blue hedgehog was a male red echidna with purple eyes, wearing a white shirt, short-sleeved black jacket, black pants, gloves with two spikes, boots, brown belts, and a silver necklace.

Tails stared at the scene with his mouth hanging open for a few seconds before finally exclaiming "Knuckles, you didn't need to do that! He wasn't even doing anything wrong!"

"I didn't want him running away when we started asking him about how he managed to get ahold of the keyblade." Knuckles replied with a huff.

The yellow fox groaned as he slapped his forehead, preferring the more peaceful route with Sonic rather than the forceful one Knuckles decided to take. But before they could say anything, a heartless dashed by outside of the window. Tails clenched his teeth as he quickly grabbed his blaster and ran over to Knuckles.

"Looks like the heartless knows he's here. We need to get him to a different location. But first..." the red echidna said, taking a pause to kneel down next to the blue hedgehog.

He placed his hand on Sonic's chest causing his hand to glow a bright green. The light shined brightly for a few seconds before finally fading away.

"There, that concealment spell should throw the heartless off of the scent of his heart for now." Knuckles said before throwing the unconscious hedgehog onto his shoulder.

Tails nodded his head in agreement before he cautiously opened the door. When he saw no signs of the heartless he gestured with his hand that the coast was clear, signaling for the red echidna to come out. Knowing that they had no time to waste the two quickly made their way through town, trying to keep Sonic's presence hidden from the lurking heartless.

Meanwhile in another world, Shadow groaned as he pushed himself on his hands and knees. He clenched his teeth in pain as he blinked open his red eyes, finding himself laying on a rock platform surrounded by many waterfalls. Silently he rubbed his hand against his head as he tried to recall his memories. The last thing he remembered was a strange cloaked figure in his room, telling him that he had a way to get off of the island. He remembered agreeing to the task before the figure placed his hand over his heart and that was where his memories became blurry.

All of the sudden Shadow's eyes widened in horror when he realized both Amy and Sonic weren't there. He quickly lifted up his head and looked around, trying to see any sign of his friends. Unfortunately for him, Shadow wasn't able to spot either of the two hedgehogs. The black hedgehog immediately jumped up on his feet, growing more worried about his missing friends. But unaware to him up on a higher platform watching him was a woman with green skin and purple eyes, wearing a long purple and black dress and a black headdress with two horns with purple stripes and a purple gem.

Back with Luigi and Yoshi, the two had been unsuccessful in their search for either the key or Knuckles. Yoshi sighed sadly as his blue eyes glanced at the dark and empty streets they were traveling. Everyone in Traverse Town was too frightened to come out of their homes in fear of the heartless preying on them. The duo had noticed a few heartless lurking in the shadows watching them as well but they never attacked. When the two was fixing to give up all hope on completing their task, Luigi felt a tap on his shoulder.

The green plumber shouted out in fear before clinging onto his dinosaur companion.

"Wait I didn't mean to frighten you! You were sent by Mario right?" a voice said.

Both Luigi's and Yoshi's eyes widened upon hearing this, prompting both of them to slowly turn around to come face to face with a female orange echidna with blue eyes, wearing a pink dress, brown boots, and a gold tiara with a blue gem.

The echidna smiled sweetly at the two, hoping her smile would show that she meant no harm.

Sonic groaned as he slowly opened his eyes and sat up. His green eyes looked around to find himself sitting on a stain glass floor that showed the image of himself sleeping with three lights circling around him. He raised a brow in confusion as he stood up and looked around, wondering where he was. He kept looking until at that moment a portal of darkness appeared on the stain-glass floor. Sonic clenched his teeth as he got in a fighting stance, watching as a figure wearing a black suit with red gloves and boots, a half-skirt that hung around a red belt, and a black helmet.

"Well isn't this a surprise, who knew the keyblade would choose a wimp like you." the masked figure snickered.

"Who are you?" Sonic demanded.

When the figure didn't answer the blue hedgehog tried to summon his keyblade but much to his shock the keyblade wouldn't come force.

The masked figure unleashed a dark laugh as darkness formed in his hand, taking shape of a black keyblade that looked like sliced gears attached to each other and a single blue-reptilian eye on the handle.

The moment the blue hedgehog's eyes focused on the keyblade he felt the waves of negative emotions he felt as a child wash over him. He squeezed his eyes shut and held his head in pain, unable to utter any words due to how strong the negative emotions was.

"Face it, you have no power here. You have no power of your own." the figure taunted as he pointed his keyblade toward Sonic's neck.

Sonic took in deep breaths as he stared at the mysterious figure, not understanding what the figure meant about having no power. He squeezed his eyes shut, readying himself for the next attack. But at that moment a sphere of light slammed into the mysterious figure. Sonic immediately opened up his eyes to see the figure fade into darkness once more. The blue hedgehog clenched his hands against his head; trying to figure why he was seeing the strange figures. He tried to ask what was happening but his voice still not had returned. He frowned as he lifted up his hand and rubbed his neck.

He remained surrounded by silence until he felt summon lay their hand on his shoulder and say his name. Wasting no time he immediately spun around to find himself face to face with Amy. He tried to call out her name but was received with pain and the negative emotions washing over him once more.

"He's hurt you again hasn't he? Don't worry I'll help you." Amy said with a small smile.

Without a word a bright glowing white surrounded her hand and she pressed it against Sonic's neck.

The blue hedgehog took in a deep breath as he felt the pain and the negative emotions fade away. His green eyes focused on the pink hedgehog before him to see she was still smiling at him.

"Sonic, it's time to wake up." she said.

With that said she was consumed in a bright light forcing Sonic to squeeze his eyes shut.

Sonic groaned as he slowly opened his eyes, muttering out Amy's name as he did so.

"Exactly how hard to you hit the poor kid you knucklehead?" a voice asked.

Sonic blinked his eyes to clear up his vision, discovering he was laying on a bed in a hotel room. Standing next to him was a white female bat with blue eyes, wearing a green tank top that exposed her midriff, blue eye-shadow, tan mini-shorts, a yellow scarf, white stockings, and orange gloves and boots. When Sonic slowly sat up on the bed it prompted Knuckles and Tails who where standing on the other side of the room to rush over.

"Great, you're alright! I was afraid Knuckles here hit you too hard." Tails said with his voice gaining a hint of a snarl during the last part.

"I was hit... well that explains why my head hurts." Sonic replied, taking a pause when his rubbed his head.

"Well don't worry too much kid, knucklehead tends to not think things through very well." the white bat said with a wink.

"Rouge, you know how much I hate you calling me that!" Knuckles yelled in anger, only prompting the bat to laugh.

The blue hedgehog shook his head as his green eyes scanned the hotel room. It only took a few seconds for him to spot his keyblade laying against the wall. His heart nearly stopped breathing when before his very eyes the keyblade disappeared in a flash of light and reappeared in his hands a few seconds.

Knuckles narrowed his eyes as he crossed his arms, now seeing proof that Sonic was indeed the owner of the keyblade. Figuring that the hedgehog would want some answers, Knuckles began explaining about the heartless.

But as he was explaining, in the next room Tikal was with Luigi and Yoshi explaining the same thing. They explained about how the different worlds used to be isolated but ever since the heartless appeared, pathways to the worlds had appeared. Thanks to the notes left by the doctor known as Ivo Robotnik who researched the heartless they had been able to take precautions against the creatures. While they could make weapons to defeat the heartless, they could always reform later, the only weapon that can defeat them is the keyblade.

"So that's why those things were after me." Sonic muttered as he lifted the keyblade in front of his face.

All of the sudden much to everyone's surprise heartless started raising up from the floor. Knuckles snarled before yelling at Rouge to get Tikal to safety.

Rouge nodded before quickly dashing to the next room, slamming the door open and causing it to slam in Luigi's face. She didn't waste time to explain as she grabbed Tikal by the arm and ran out of the room, leaving Yoshi standing over Luigi who eyes were spinning as he laid slumped against the wall.

Meanwhile Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles were battling heartless as they were making their way out of hotel. Sonic slashed his keyblade at all the heartless that tried to grab him as he dashed through the hallway. Many thoughts were running through his mind as he continued to fight through the horde of heartless; he began to wonder if Amy and Shadow were okay and that they hadn't gotten their hearts stolen. Because he was so lost of his thoughts, Sonic was surprised when he found himself standing in the third district of Traverse Town.

"Yoshi, hang on!" a voice shouted, prompting the blue hedgehog to look up.

On a higher up platform Luigi and Yoshi were defending themselves against a couple of heartless. Unfortunately because of the strength of the heartless attacks, the two ended up losing their balance and fell off the platform.

Sonic stared in shock as he watched the two fall but because he stared at them for so long they ended up landing on him before he could process that they were falling toward him.

The trio groaned as the all lay in a pile, dazed and sore. Luigi and Yoshi slowly sat up but both of them nearly stopped breathing when they saw the keyblade in Sonic's hand.

"The key!" the two shouted in unison.

At that moment the ground began to rumble as walls rose up from the ground, blocking off all passage ways. The trio jumped up on their feet just in time to see a giant heartless with knight's armor with it's limbs floating around its body.

Sonic's grip tightened on the keyblade's handle as he ran around the heartless, leaving behind a blue streak trail.

Luigi chanted out spells, creating fire to blast at the heartless while Yoshi bashed at the heartless' body with his shield.

The blue hedgehog slashed his keyblade at the heartless head, doing as much damage as he could. But when they thought they were winning the heartless split apart, its limbs taking off in different directions. Knowing what had to be done the trio split up to take on the different limbs. Luigi jumped on the arms before blasting another fire spell at them, destroying them. Yoshi spun through the legs with his shield before finally smashing his shield down on them, destroying them. Sonic jumped up in the air and began spinning in air with his keyblade held out.

Once he was fully charged he dashed toward the heartless' head and torso, managing to drill completely through it. Sonic took in deep breaths, watching as the heartless disappeared in a ball of light and a glowing heart floated up to the sky. The blue hedgehog let out a sigh of relief before turning toward Yoshi and Luigi who were walking toward him.

"So you guys were looking for me?" Sonic asked.

Both Luigi and Yoshi nodded their heads.

"They were looking for the keyblade wielder to find their missing friends. It would be wise to go with them if you want to find your missing friends." Knuckles said as he walked up to the trio.

The blue hedgehog said nothing when he saw the two before him frown slightly when the echidna mention their missing friends. He knew exactly how they felt with the disappearance of Amy and Shadow. In an attempt to try to cheer them up he leaned up toward their faces and placed a huge grin on his face.

"No need to look so mopey, I'm Sonic, Sonic the Hedgehog!" he said.

Both Luigi and Yoshi smiled at this before they introduced themselves as well. The trio laughed as all three of them agreed to travel together. With their minds set they placed their hands on top of each other as a symbol of their new friendship. They intended to save the worlds from the heartless and find their missing friends Shadow, Amy, Mario, and Peach. With the keyblade in Sonic's hand they knew nothing could stop them in their quest.

Chapter 4

While Sonic, Luigi, and Yoshi were greeting each other, unknown to them they were being watched through a crystal orb by six figures in a dark room. The figures muttered and talked amongst themselves about how not only did Sonic managed to defeat a heartless but also how he managed to get ahold of the keyblade. They were especially confused by this because they assumed that they already had the keyblade wielder in their grasp.

"What's going on, Enchantress? You said there were no other keyblade wielders!" a short, fat figure exclaimed.

The Enchantress who was the green-skinned woman in black narrowed her eyes as she ran her fingers across the crystal orb.

"The three wielders I encountered ten years ago are indeed gone. One in eternal sleep and one lost in darkness while the other was consumed by it. Only one of them left behind a successor yet somehow this boy we see before us managed to gain the ability to wield the keyblade. Quite intriguing if you ask me." she replied with a dark smile on her face.

"Still I suggest we should get rid of him like we did with the red-capped keyblade wielder. I say we plunge him into his darkest nightmares and turn him into a heartless." a tall figure with six floating hands said.

"And I suppose you're wanting to scare him with that ridiculous mug of yours." a figure with a suave and flamboyant voice said.

"Like you're face is any better!" a female voice exclaimed.

At that moment all the figures except for the Enchatress began arguing and bickering with each other. The enchantress let out a frustrated sigh as she rubbed her fingers against the temple of her forehead; she hated when her associates would start arguing. Deciding to block out the noise she directed her thoughts toward Sonic. While she did found the fact he had a keyblade troublesome; she always considered it useful as well. Without a word a small chuckle managed to escape her mouth as she began to formulate a plan.

"Perhaps I can use this boy to help plunge the other one into darkness. And then he shall share the same fate as his predecessor." the Enchantress thought as her purple eyes glanced over to a certain black hedgehog.

Back with Sonic, Luigi, and Yoshi, the trio had already boarded the gummi ship. Sonic's mouth dropped open as he looked around the ship in awe; he had never seen anything like it in his entire life. The gummi ship was full of high-tech panels, buttons, and lights. In the cockpit there was three chairs and at the main control panel was none other than Clank. The blue hedgehog was speechless as he watched the small silver robot type in coordinates.

"Clank, this is Sonic. He'll be accompanying us." Luigi said.

"He's the wielder of the keyblade!" Yoshi stated.

Upon hearing this Clank immediately stopped typing and turned around to see Sonic. He tapped one of his robot fingers against his chin as he walked toward the blue hedgehog and circled him a few times to examine him. Finally after a few seconds Clank nodded his head in satisfaction before walking back over to the control panels.

Sonic scratched the back of his head while he had a brow raised in confusion; he didn't understand if Clank was okay with him or just accepted the fact he was there. Choosing to ignore it for the moment he sat down in one of the cockpit seats along Luigi and Yoshi.

"I've typed in the coordinates for the nearest world. Our next location is the realm 'The Azran Kingdoms'." Clank explained as he finished typing in commands.

Sonic could barely contain his excitement and nervousness at the thought of getting to explore new worlds, but he knew he had to remain focused on his goal if he wanted to find Shadow and Amy. His hands clenched slightly as he thought about his missing friends, unable to do anything but hope that they were somewhere safe. It only took a few moments for the Gummi Ship to speed through the Lanes in Between before arriving at a world that looked like a orb that had a boat on the top while below it was a golden castle.

Clank typed on the control panel as he activated the teleportation stand.

"Alright you're all set. Just remember not to disturb the world's environment too much." the robot stated.

"Don't worry, Clank. I'll make sure to keep these two out of trouble." Luigi said while giving a thumbs up.

But while he did this he didn't notice both Yoshi and Sonic giving him annoyed looks with their arms crossed. Not wanting to waste anymore time the trio went over to the transporters, prompting Clank to push the red button and transport them away.

Sonic squeezed his eyes when his vision was engulfed by a blinding light and when he opened them he found himself sitting in a small boat along with Luigi and Yoshi. The boat was speeding across the ocean at top speed while there was tall golden bars on the sides of the boat to prevent anyone from falling off. They were confused about where Clank had placed them until they heard a gasp. Immediately the trio spotted a young woman with red hair pulled into a ponytail and brown eyes, wearing a purple dress, black heels, and a gold necklace with a single purple gem sitting across from them with a blanket wrapped around her body.

"Where did you three come from?" the woman asked in confusion.

"Uh were from far away and ended up here." Luigi replied in a nervous tone.

The woman blinked her eyes in silence for a few moments before finally a small smile formed on her face.

"Well I suppose it's nice to have company. I don't know how long I've been stuck on this boat or where it's headed." the woman said before gasping and placing her hand over her mouth before continuing, "Oh I almost for got to introduce myself! My name is Janice."

"Well I'm Sonic and this is Luigi and Yoshi." Sonic greeted with a grin along with his two companions.

Unfortunately the aura of happiness didn't last long when they saw the boat was approaching a small island. The boat arrived on the sandy shores of the island and without anyone even touching anything, the back wall of the boat lowered to reveal a exit ramp.

Janice cautiously looked around the beach before getting off the boat. Her eyes were full of concern when she saw her boat was the only one there. Silently she bit her lip and clasped her hand around her necklace.

"Oh professor, please be alright." she whispered to herself.

At that moment heartless soldiers rose began appearing on the beach. Sonic immediately summoned his keyblade and stood protectively in front of Janice. He didn't know why but deep down in his heart he felt he needed to keet the woman safe at all costs otherwise something terrible would happen. Luigi and Yoshi ran up next to Sonic with their wand and shield ready. The heartless drew closer to the group before lunging for an attack. Sonic slashed his keyblade through a couple of heartless while Luigi blasted his fire magic at the others. Yoshi stood his ground next to Janice, making sure none of the heartless got near the young woman.

The blue hedgehog clenched his teeth as he spin dashed through a group of heartless, destroying them all. But despite this more heartless appeared to take the fallen's place. Sonic knew that something had to be drawing the heartless near to cause so many to appear. He remembered what Knuckles and Tails told him back in Traverse Town about how the heartless wouldn't stop until they claimed his heart, leaving him to wonder if the heartless were coming for him. Everyone kept fighting until at that moment they heard a scream.

Sonic and Luigi immediately turned around to see Yoshi unconscious on the ground and a man wearing a grey suit, a gray and black cape with a fur collar, a white mask over his eyes, and a black hat holding an unconscious Janice in his arms.

"Hey you let go of her!" Sonic yelled in anger before charging forward.

The man sneered as he managed to swiftly dodge all the swipes from the keyblade much to the blue hedgehog's shock.

"Don't make me laugh boy, you're no match for me." the man hissed before kicking Sonic in the stomach.

Sonic grunted in pain as he fell on the ground, holding his hand over his stomach.

Luigi blasted fire at the masked man only for the man to jump out of the way of the attack.

The masked man tightened his grip on the unconscious girl in his arms as he took a few steps backwards. At that moment heartless rose out in front of the ground in front of him, hiding him away from sight.

Sonic and Luigi were able to defeat these heartless but by they time they did the masked man was already gone along with Janice. The blue hedgehog snarled in anger as he slammed his fist against the tree next to him, angry that he failed to save the young woman.

Luigi immediately ran over to Yoshi with a concerned frown before casting a cure spell.

Yoshi's body was engulfed in a green aura for a few seconds before it faded away and he slowly opened his green eyes.

"What happened to Janice?" Yoshi asked as he rubbed his head.

"She was taken by that weird masked guy. I think he's working with the heartless since they helped him escape." Sonic replied as he took a few deep breaths through his nose, trying to calm himself down.

"So where do you think he was taking her?" Luigi asked.

The blue hedgehog scratched his head in thought; he wanted to rescue Janice but he didn't know the first place to look. He remained in thought until Luigi suggested they search the forest. With no other leads to go by Sonic nodded his head in agreement before entering the forest with his companions.

The trio didn't say a word as they kept their weapons out, making sure not to get caught off guard by the heartless. They kept searching until they heard a twig snap. Immediately the three got in fighting positions, ready to face their threat.

But much to their shock instead of heartless, out from the shadows emerged wolves. The wolves snarled and growled as they circled the group with their fangs glistening. The trio was prepared for the attack, ready to take on their opponents. One of the wolves finally lunged at Sonic but its attack never landing. Just right as the wolf was about to hit Sonic it was knocked away by a pipe.

The blue hedgehog stared in shock when he saw now standing before him was a brown-headed man with dark-brown eyes that looked black, wearing a brown trench coat and pants, an orange sweater, green shoes, and a tall brown top hat with a red ribbon.

"Are you gentlemen alright?" the man asked as he kept one hand firmly grasped around the pipe he was using as a weapon while the other held onto the brim of his top hat.

"Yeah but we still got a problem." Sonic replied before knocking away another wolf with his keyblade.

Yoshi held up his shield and smashed it against a few wolves that tried to attack him and Luigi.

Sonic kept fighting off the wolves as he found himself back to back with the man in the top hat as a few wolves circled them. The two looked at each other and nodded their heads at the same time, both thinking of the same idea. The wolves snarled before charging toward their targets but fortunately Sonic and the man in the top hat jumped up, causing the wolves to collide into each other.

Seeing they were unable to win the wolves whined as they ran off in the forest. Upon seeing the threat was gone the group all sighed in unison before putting away their respective weapons.

"Hey thanks for helping us there." Luigi thanked as he wiped some sweat off of his brow.

"Well I saw you were in trouble and I had to give you a hand. So what would you gentlemen's names be?" the top-hatted man replied with a smile.

"Our names is Sonic, Luigi, and Yoshi." the green dinosaur answered.

The man wearing the top-hat wearing man tipped his hat before replying "Well it's a pleasure to meet you. I'm Professor Hershel Layton."

As the group made their way through the forest, Layton explained how he arrived on the island through a boat just like the one Janice was on. He along with his assistant Luke Triton were pursuing the masked man known as Jean Descole after he kidnapped Janice at the end of her show. When he and Luke arrived on the island they encountered heartless, forcing them to take refuge in the woods but this caused the professor to be separated from his assistant.

"So the heartless are causing trouble here too?" Sonic asked.

"Heartless, so that's what those strange creatures were called." Layton said as he placed his hand on his chin.

Panic raced through Luigi's heart before he whacked the blue hedgehog against the head with his hand. He remembered how Clank warned them not to disturb the world too much, meaning they couldn't let the realm's residents gain any knowledge about the heartless.

Sonic glared at the green plumber as he rubbed the spot where he had been whacked; he didn't see what the problem in revealing the name of the heartless to the professor.

They kept walking until they heard a young voice cry out for help.

Layton's eyes widened in fear before he took off running; he knew exactly who the yell belonged to. He shoved past different branches and twigs till he finally managed to reach a clearing. There he saw a young boy with dirty-blond hair and brown eyes, wearing a white button-up shirt, blue shorts with black suspenders, a blue flat-cap, and brown shoes trapped of the roof of a tool shed, surrounding by heartless that looked like warriors with fish helmets on and held spears in their hands.

The boy took in deep and frantic breaths and he tried to keep his distance from the heartless, frightened of what would happen if one were to capture him. He bit his lip as he looked toward the woods and spotted Layton. When he saw him relief and happiness washed over him as a huge smile formed on his face.

"Professor, you're alright!" the boy cried out.

Layton clenched his hand around the pipe he kept with him for safety before shouting "Hang on, Luke!"

Within seconds Sonic and the others came rushing up to the professor's side. When they saw Luke trapped on the roof of the shed by the heartless they immediately got out their weapons.

"We'll help too, Layton. We know how to destroy the heartless." Sonic said with a small smirk.

Layton nodded his head in understanding before all of them finally charged toward the heartless. The fight was vicious as each one of them slashed, bashed, and blasted at the incoming heartless. One by one the heartless disappeared in puffs of darkness upon their defeat until finally there was only one remaining. Sonic and Layton charged toward the heartless at the same time, ready to destroy it but unfortunately the heartless transported away at the last second.

Seeing that the danger was gone, Luke slid off of the roof of the shed and ran over to the professor. He wrapped his arms around his mentor's waist and buried his head in his chest.

"Professor, I was so worried when we got separated! I thought those things got you!" the young boy said, doing his best to fight back his tears.

Layton smiled down at his assistant as he gently patted the young boy's head, insuring him that he was alright and intended not to get separated again.

Luigi couldn't help but smile at the sight of the reunited friends; he was glad Layton was able to save Luke since the last thing he wanted was for the professor to lose him to the heartless much like Mario was.

After Luke pulled out of the hug, Layton introduced him to his new companions and explained to him about how Sonic and the others were helping him rescue Janice.

"Speaking of Janice that reminds me, professor!" the young boy exclaimed, "I saw Descole taking her to some weird machine!"

"A machine, where would that be?" Layton asked.

Luke didn't say a word as he pointed toward a cliff that over looked the ocean. On top of the cliff was a strange machine that had many musical instruments attached to it.

Knowing there had to be no other location where Descole and Janice could be, the group began making their way toward the machine.

Meanwhile at the top of the cliff Descole was pulling levers to adjust the large machine while Janice sat next to a rock with her arms tied behind her back.

"I don't know what you're planning and why you brought me here but the professor will stop you!" Janice said with her voice full of anger.

Descole said nothing as he pulled the final lever, causing the machine to whir to life. Seeing that everything was set he walked over to Janice without word.

The red-headed woman clenched her teeth as the masked man grabbed her by the arm on pulled her up on her feet. She wanted to shout a remark toward her captor but unfortunately she couldn't find the words.

The two remained in silence for a few moments before Descole finally said "I brought you here because I need Melina to sing the 'Song of the Sea' so she may reveal the keyhole."

Janice gasped in shock in fear before squeezing her eyes shut and quickly replying "I don't know what you're talking about. Melina died many months ago!"

The masked man snarled in frustration as he grabbed ahold of Janice's chin and forced her face toward his.

Janice slightly yelped in pain before slowly opening her brown eyes. Even though Descole was wearing a mask due to how close she was to him she could partly make out two brown crimson-like eyes in the darkness of the mask. She didn't know why but by looking into his eyes she could sense much rage and hurt contained in the man's heart.

The young woman was snapped out of her thoughts when she heard Descole said "Don't play coy with me, I know Melina's heart dwells in yours. You couldn't let go of your closest friend so you accepted her heart into yours so she could live on forever."

Janice did not say a word as her eyes glanced down in guilt; she knew there was no use in hiding the truth.

"Now listen closely." Descole started, prompting the young woman to give him eye contact once again, "I need Melina to take over your body, only she can sing the song. That song is one of two that will reveal the keyhole. It is crucial I find that keyhole, now will you help me or not."

The red-headed woman clenched her hands tightly into fists, unsure what to do. She didn't want to trust the masked man but deep down in her heart she felt that if the keyhole wasn't found that disaster would befall her world. After a few seconds of silence Janice took in a deep breath and nodded her head. With her mind set the red-headed woman closed her eyes before a bright light began to glow in her chest.
