The Photography Thread - Ask Questions, Post Photos, Discuss Cameras

Sami

Recommended Posts

So it seems the old photography thread got lost in the wipe. At least, my original post did. This is kind of a good opportunity though, I suppose, as it's a chance to make my original intent clear with the older thread.

So, we have the Post Your Pictures thread already. It never really saw much use, but the purpose behind it was to take pictures of random stuff and just show SSMB your snapshots. That's totally cool, but not exactly what this thread's intention is. I want to focus more on art photography in particular.

High quality gear is not required, but very heavily encouraged. It's not quite as expensive as you think! Entry level cameras fall around the range of video game consoles, and go down in price quite steeply during big sales like Black Friday.

Personally, I'm using this -

Sony+A6000+A+Sweet+Interchangeable-Lens+

Sony a6000

$698 on Amazon

DPReview is an excellent resource for anyone wanting to learn about cameras. Best there is, imo. If you're in the market for a camera, consult that site first and foremost.

The best entry level cameras of 2014 -

Now I know what you're all thinking -

BwD8MdYCIAEI79s.jpg
should I go mirrorless or dslr

DSLRs have a wider variety of natively compatible lenses, slightly better night performance, and better battery life. Mirrorless cameras are substantially smaller and lighter, perform faster, and are better for video. It's up to you what you value most, but personally, I think mirrorless cameras are the future and the much smarter investment right now.

If you have any questions regarding equipment or technique, ask away here. I'm more than happy to help and discuss.

On to photos! I took a ton since I got my camera last November, so it would be stupid to post literally everything haha. Here are my personal favorites:

If any of you guys are even a little bit interested in getting a camera, ask away. The more photographers on here the better!

I'm afraid I don't have a high quality camera right now, but I've been thinking about getting one should my finances be in order. However, all the technical details of cameras confuse my terribly lol. I really must read up on that.

In the meantime here's something I snapped while I was in Stroud, England back in 2010. Hope it's ok ^^;

Not sure if this belongs in this thread but here's something I took in Kolkata, India earlier this year. Probably thanks to my cheap camera the shot came out looking quite different and actually more spectacular than real life, so shitty cameras give you better sunsets is my advice to all you amateur photographers! (Please try and ignore the encroaching dark matter)

I'm far from talented in the medium, but I take a photography class in school and I absolutely love it. My teacher really hammers down the concept of using creative angles to take pictures, and I think I've improved greatly by applying that to the pictures I turn in.

For instance, I went from turning in super srs pictures of the kid who sits behind me in Economics eating pancakes in the middle of class to turning in nice little depth of field pictures like this:

Heh, I'm basically stuck with my webcam. :P

I love how some cameras capture almost all the pixels, if that makes any sense.

I don't consider myself a photographer, but I do feel that I have something of an eye for a good picture, even though I seldom am able to fully realize what I want to see. Early morning light flooding through holes in a dark and stormy sky to paint the local courthouse in shades of gold the other day, for example. I could've photo'd that so hard, but I was going to work. Too bad, so sad etc.

These three were taken a few years ago, and with my old Canon Pixma camera, which I still own. I know they probably don't hold up against those taken with professional gear, but I am quite proud of them.

I'm not really talented at the subject, but I think I've improved substantially during my time in the course.

Keep at it. man.  :)

A little before/after I threw together comparing my work in my first high school photography class to one I took back in January. I feel like I've really come a long way after buying my own camera and learning how to use Lightroom properly.

PM me if you ever want to chat about cameras, I love photography and if I can be even the smallest influence in getting someone to find a passion in it I'll be thrilled.

Oh wow, I really love that fourth one.

I'm jealous tbh LOL. Europe's a beautiful place - there's really not much of interest to look at in my town.

Wow pretty crazy you guys both took a photo of the same girl in front of the same mirror on the same day. she even still has her drink. did you use the same camera? looks like a 50mm. I like the bokeh

Yep, that's a 50.

She's my girlfriend, haha. Sami and I are friends IRL; hopefully this clears up any confusion later on.

Uh not that crazy, we're friends.

And thanks. I like bokeh.

Edit - to be totally honest I'm curious what you're trying to accuse us of here, judging from your tone. You think Wander is an alt account of mine or something?
