SEGA's arcade presence

Salutations folks. I originally started this thread just before the board had a heart attack, but it looks like it wasn't salvageable.

More to the point, do any of you fine folks know of SEGA's current position in the Japanese arcade industry? I've heard Gareth Spriggs of Findthecomputerroom and Hellfirecomms state that most arcade hardware is manufactured by SEGA for developers, but I haven't been able to find any documentation for his claim.

There might be truth to what Gareth said, but I wouldn't quite use him as a source on anything...ever... :P I've never been to Japan myself but I can't say I've ever heard of their arcade portion struggling.

Well todays Japanese arcades have a focus on competetive online games and trading cards ever since about 2005, in which Sega holds dominant position in (maybe not in sheer profit, but in the number of games they operate for sure). Also Sega always did well with semi-gambling machines (medal games, not pachinko)

Namco Bandai and Konami have them beat in some areas. That being music games for Konami, and Tekken has overtaken Virtua Fighter due to VF not having a new installment...and pretty much Gundam overtakes everything as usual.

When Sega mentions of their Arcades struggling, they usually mean the industry as a whole...they still bank heavily not, despite declining, and they still have probably the biggest arcade division in Japanese companies (again, due to the sheer number of games)

There's been some crisis with the FY2014 losing money, which happens rarely for Sega in Arcades, but overall next fiscal year should be in the black again.
