"Publisher Marvelous loses around $3.8 million on project

Kaio: King of Pirates, an adventure game in the works by Keiji Inafune's Comcept development studio, has officially been confirmed as cancelled by publisher Marvelous. That's perhaps no surprise considering the continual delays and silence on the 3DS release, but it's nevertheless still rather disappointing.

The brand was originally planned to become a significant one for Marvelous, and there had been talk of a trilogy - the press release confirming the cancellation, however, highlights marketplace changes and "other difficult situations regarding plans they had for its mixed media development" as causes. As a whole the project has lost Marvelous around $3.8 million in costs. Comcept's recent priorities, meanwhile, have been the crowdfunding and subsequent development of Mighty No. 9, which is planned for Wii U, 3DS and a host of platforms.

We never saw a great deal of this title, though with Inafune-san on board there was some excitement around it. This official cancellation merely confirms, unfortunately, what had long been suspected of the project's progress."

I've never even heard of this game before now.

A shame.  I remember the title being announced, years ago, and was intrigued.  It looked good, although it's worth remembering that we saw basically nothing of it.  Seems like an odd decision just to scrap all the work they'd presumably already done, since it lost them millions, but maybe those millions were spread around on the whole initiative and it would've taken more to get the game to a release-worthy state.  But that implies a kind of on-again-off-again development process which really just sounds mismanaged.  What were they doing with the property for the past couple of years, just sitting on it endlessly recalculating whether it would sell?  Even if the mixed-media aspect didn't look promising - for which, see the flops of Hero Bank and Gaist Crusher, but contrast to the huge success of Yokai Watch - then they could still have just put it out there as a game if they had something playable.

First time I've heard of it, not surprised though since it's apparently been in development for ages. It looked decent but tis still a shame it's been cancelled. =[

Anymore, seeing a Keiji Inafune project actually get released is an accomplishment.

Gunvolt doesn't count since it wasn't technically his game.
