The "What the HECK Is A 2016 Sonic" Prophecy Thread (two topics from the pre-server wipe in one!)

I made a giant post about this before the server wipe, and let me tell you, I ain't doing it again. Hogfather made a big topic too, and I think it was also lost.. I think.

 

What I will do is bring together the facts we know up to this point and paraphrase.

 

1 ) Sonic Team is split somewhat into two parts that work in tandem: Sonic Team A (the Unleashed/Generations team, makes big games with lots of effort and all the budget) and Sonic Team B (Storybook/Colors/Lost World team, makes smaller games that are Nintendo exclusive and more experimental). Each team intermingles with one another and trades key members around, but are nevertheless very much seperate groups, a statement supported by a topic on Retro that discusses taking apart Lost World's data.

 

2 ) Iizuka mentioned in a 2012 interview with Eurogamer that Sonic Team is already at work in finding out what they can do with all three next gen consoles. Both Playstation 4 and Xbox One are mentioned, as well as the Wii U (though the possibility of the next Sonic being on it is unsure as of right now). He also mentions that the series will continue to improve visually, but instead of going for more realistic visuals they're planning on trying to make Sonic's world more "convincing".

 

3 ) Jazwares leaked a poster that mentions Sega's future plans (the same one proven true, mentioning both info of Boom as well as a Sonic movie which was eventually confirmed), and it mentions of an upcoming TBA 2015 Sonic game for Wii U, PS4, and Xbox One. Sega PR has said that it's not necessarily true, but Sega PR is often as trustworthy as a bar of moldy soap so it could easily be backpedaling, or maybe not exactly accurate.

 

4 ) Sonic Retro user Endri has seen the game (or something of it) on a developer kit edition of the Xbox One Live Marketplace. He's trustworthy, as he's the same guy who leaked us the first tidbits of info about Sonic 4 : Episode 1 in 2010, also thanks to having a dev kit but for the 360. He also mentioned the game is "not [Lost World] 2 and neither it follows the Generations formula".

 

Conclusion?

 

There's a Sonic game from Sonic Team A that has at least been in development since 2012 for Playstation 4, Xbox One and (possibly still) the Wii U. There's a large possibility it'll be coming out this year, but there's also the chance that it may have been pushed to 2016, given that Sega PR have mentioned that the Jazwares leak isn't very reliable (it could also hint at Wii U maybe not getting the game, but there's nothing to say that is true.. yet).

 

Most importantly out of all of this: the visuals are going to try to make Sonic's world more 'convincing' rather than go for heavier realism, and the game is neither the clunky Lost World gameplay nor the boost to win Unleashed/Colors/Gens gameplay so it could literally be anything.

 

This topic is to discuss this upcoming game since we keep letting it bleed into other topics (lol), so let's start over here. Get scratchin'. And please SSMB, don't die on me again.

Also note that the Sonic Team A games get announced near the beginning of April, and the Sonic Team B games were announced near the middle / end of May.

I bet my avatar for a month that only Sonic is playable in most of the story again.

I'm not sure what they mean by convincing visuals other than increasing fidelity, which will probably be construed as realism anyway. Sega has never had a real problem making games that looked good at the time with that one big exception, regardless of whether they went with a semi-realistic or more abstracted style. I also don't see them really forgoing a lot of the power of the PS4 and Xbone. I like to imagine they're just going to continue the Pixar direction of realistic lighting and texturing in more fantastic worlds.

I am actually a little pumped to see what's been in the pipeline for all this time. After Lost World and *shudders* Boom, I'm just ready to see what Sonic Team A can bring to the table now.

 

And also, I really wanna see it this year... even though it's the 25th next year and it makes more sense...

So, the next game announcement should be somewhere in April. That is, if there will be a Sonic Team game this year. ( I still believe we're getting a game in 2016 ( 25th anniversary)

 

Regardless, I'm hyped to see what game Sonic Team A was working on. Can't wait.

Yeah, I'm with Brad. I would prefer if they release the Sonic Team A game next year but if they can still provide a great game this year and the next year, I'll be ok.

Here's hoping they've got something to blow us away. It'll have had at least three years development regardless of whether it comes this year or the next. That's a luxury not seen by Sonic Team very often so hopefully they've made use of the breathing room. Very excited to see what direction things are headed in.

 

Actually, the more I think about it, Team A's game could be 2015 or 2016 so there's some speculation there. Team B meanwhile should in theory have something for the usual October release window this year since it'd be two years since Lost World and Boom won't have had any influence on any Sonic Team work. I'll be surprised if we don't see something from one of the teams this year.

I'm really excited for them to announce the next game. The speculation and hype period is always fun for me, even with the Boom games that I eventually just ended up not caring about at all. Really looking forward to getting into that sort of thing again, since I actually have a decent amount of faith in Sonic Team as developers and don't expect them to drop the ball (for me personally, anyway).

Im still going by a theory that I made before the site went down. In addition to the next main series Sonic game the next Olympic games will be revealed and they'll also unveil a new Amiibo line(since they'll selling like hotcakes) with Sonic characters.

Anyway....

 

For those who said that the Jazwares sign was fake/Sega made it up... Basically, Jazwares don't make Sonic toys anymore, so why would they advertise Boom toys when they're not making them.

 

Also the artwork on the sign matches up with official documentation for how Sonic packaging should be, which is why a lot of recent stuff has that 'collectors edition.' Jono D and his partner have the design documents for both modern and classic Sonic which are evidence of this.

To be honest, Dimps was fine when they were handling their own games. It's only when Sonic Team decided to force them at gunpoint to make hand-me-down ports that problems started to arise.

 

Just let them make good original handheld games again it's not that hard

Well count me in too as someone who is interested in what Sonic Team has been doing. Even if I don't think will see a major game this year, I would like something to take the bad taste on my mouth left by Boom.

 

Man I want a reason to be excited as a sonic fan again. I miss the time when I was pleasantly surprised by any sonic news, now I feel like the recent outings just have been lowering my expectations each year.
