What would make you being excited about Sonic 2016?

Hello guys!

Here's a question I would like you to answer. E3 is getting closer so we can probably expect a teaser of the mysterious Sonic 2016. My question is simple: What feature would make you want this game instantanly? Imagine yourself watching the teaser and tell me what element would make you being super excited about it!

Good gameplay would be the main thing.  A bit obvious, but at this point what I think Sonic needs most is to be fun to play.  What that will entail in the new game will be anyone's guess at this point.  Personally I'm still waiting for something akin to a more polished SA1 Sonic.  That, or a new 2D game with physics of the classics and a cool art style.

That aside, I'd like some indication that the writing and atmosphere will be improved.  Good dialogue and character interaction.  Simple but enjoyable plot. Jokes that don't make me want to stab myself.

The direction of the series is too up-in-the-air for me to really wish for specific features at the moment.  Just an overall sense of "that looks fun" is what I need most.

I know myself - anything would make me want the game instantly.

But if there's anything I want to see more than anything else, it would be graphics worthy of the PS4/XB1 in a game with multiple characters and 3D gameplay that looks like really good fun. None of the same stuff we've before, I want something better.

Remember the Lost World reveal trailer? That blew everyone away. It had a striking new visual style and the gameplay looked like exactly the sort of thing everyone wanted, along with an interesting story with a bunch of new villains. The end result didn't live up to what we expected from the trailer, but still. It certainly set the hype up to 11.

I want Rouge to come back into the series, realize the vast amounts of potential to be a great character that she has/had displayed in her earlier appearances, and not be Shadow's fuckin' sidekick more than anything else at this point. While I get a distinct impression that it'll never happen, it's still what would make me most excited for a new entry in the series.

Hmm...the announcement of a PC port would be pretty great as well, seeing as I don't own any consoles at the moment. I kind of think that's going to be unlikely as well, though.

My last answer is a bit dull of an answer, but one that holds true to me nonetheless. Showing off unique, gorgeous looking environments and snippets of a great soundtracks would get me to look forward to a new release. Holding true on all of those things once the game is released would be even better, of course, but eh.

Proper pinball physics and level design that strongly encourages using them. Or if I can't have that, maybe really fluid, fast-paced parkour.

Though even then I'd be seriously side-eyeing it after everything that's happened with this series.

It's hard to say what would make me excited to see in a teaser that would make me recklessly abandon my caution. Fully 3D gameplay/hubs and alternate characters at the least.

Multiple characters, like SA1, I'd like it if all of the game was in 3D instead of 3D and 2D, Sonic controlling like he did in SA1, dialogue that doesn't make me want to rip my ears off, Hub worlds, like SA1.

So yeah, pretty much an updated SA1 would get me pretty hyped.

I guess the only thing that would make me want the game instantly would be if it looked like loads of fun just moving Sonic around. I'd also appreciate if the artstyle was bright and slightly trippy like in CD, but that's not really a necessity.

Alternatively the game could just be Jet Set Radio 3 wrapped in a Sonic skin (since that's the only way we'd ever see a sequel) and I'd preorder it instantly.

To be honest, just seeing Sonic back in a new major Sonic Team game will be enough to make me excited. Whatever they show, I'll be excited for it.

What I would really love to see gameplay wise is something that is genuinely trying to re-create the experience that made Sonic such an important franchise, and an understanding of what makes that experience.

Good gameplay would be the main thing.  A bit obvious, but at this point what I think Sonic needs most is to be fun to play.

I'm always a bit curious, is good gameplay really something you can figure out from a trailer?

Say you're watching a trailer for Sonic 4, does that tell you the game will be fun or will be ruined by the subtle misteps that Sonic 4 ended up suffering?

Watching Sonic hop on platforms or run trough hoops won't tell us much, every game including Sonic 06 and Boom WII U has that happening.

Of course playing the eventual demo will give the final answer, but that's step 2.

But I'm being a bit of an ass here. Gameplay is just such an abstract thing that I'm always a bit curious how it works as a initial motivator.

Tough as you eventually say; as long as it generally looks fun. Guess we should just be on the look out for signs of danger like the overabundance of speed boosters or Slow walking Silver Hedgehogs.

As for me, I have to admit it's mostly just the energy that would sell me.

The sense there's excitement and energy, that the developers are really excited about what they're doing and just overflowing with inspiration and excitement.

I didn't really get that with the last few games, the developers seem to be more concerned about being unique or re-inventing the series then really having fun with possibilities.

Good gameplay, looks exciting to play, multiple playable characters (HA!) and a good and competently told story. Graphics and sound are important too but I'm more focused on the gameplay aspect here, especially since SLW really disappointed me in that regard.

Fumie Kumatani being confirmed as alive and doing level music along with Kenichi Tokoi

It's a ridiculous thing to ask for, I know.

I want this too. She's too amazing a composer to delegated to lowly cutscene music as she seemingly has been since Colours.

I want to see a Sonic game with some actual scope. Something truly ambitious. I'd be excited if Maekawa was handed the reins of Sonic game storytelling. I'd be very excited with characters other than Sonic got real involvement instead of being a walking toolkit (Tails) or a cheerleading squad (Everyone else)

Makes me wonder, how can you tell from a trailer?

Like say you're watching a trailer for Sonic 4, does that tell you the game will be fun or will be ruined by the subtle misteps that Sonic 4 ended up suffering?

I've had this ability for the longest time to be able to tell how a game controls just by watching it. After playing so many Sonic games at this point, I can tell by the movement in the trailer's slight nuances how Sonic is gonna control and how intuitive it's going to be.

For every game since about... Colors and Sonic 4, I guess, I've been right on the money. I wasn't wrong about Generations (clunkier, heavier and not-so-accurate classic Sonic, slightly better modern Sonic) and I wasn't that far off with Lost World, and I was just about right on the money with Boom. I also have gotten used to this with fan games and everything as well, so there's that.

In short, what I'm saying is that after you've played enough of them you can tell by even the smallest amount of footage how it's going to control.

What's a "good gameplay" for Sonic? Just watching him hop on platforms or run trough hoops won't tell us much, every game including Sonic 06 and Boom WII U has that stuff happening.

Of course playing the eventual demo will give the final answer, but that's step 2.

Building up and retaining speed, acceleration, slopey level design that works around it, tight controls that don't depend on instant bursts or drops in speed.

I know we've been through a lot of inconsistency but it's really not that hard to see what made the best games work.

Not rushing the game for a holiday release and the ability to play as other characters again.  And a return of character theme songs.  Those are a definite must.  None of those things might actually make the game better overall, but I know that those are the things that would get me excited for a new game.

"Since Colors"? I wish! She hasn't been involved in any game since, and last I recall, Jez asked Jun Senoue on FB about her whereabouts and he responded but refuse to say.

She could be dead as far as anyone knows. Realistically, she probably had some falling out with Sega or Wave Master and is now out of a job.

Are you implying her cutscene music isn't godlike when it isn't generic cartoon sound effects?

Because if you are, we're going to have a problem buddy :V

Tails, Knuckles, and Amy returning as playable characters. I'd love it if they'd played more or less like their Adventure selves. But instead of racing, treasure hunting, and running away from a robot, they use their different abilities to help them get through the same levels as Sonic.

Think 3D Sonic Advance 1.

It's odd that even Sonic Generations didn't feature music by Fumie Kumatani. I have a bad feeling she's not around Sega anymore. 8(
