GameStop to Offer Trade-ins on Classic Consoles/Games

They've seen selling some classic games exclusively throw Power Up Rewards.

Just seems weird because it feels like they always have a sale on trying to get rid of old PS2/PSP games and then they pull this.

Funcoland makes a comeback? (does anyone know what that is?)

that's cool though if it's legit. Only place I could buy classic games from was Play'N'Trade and the location nearest to me closed down :(

Its legit, multiple news outlets have reported on the story. amazed I didn't notice until now.

I remember Play N' Trade! jeez that store had a horrid fate.

I'm conflicted here.

On one hand, this is concerning for stores dedicated to selling old games.

On the other hand, this will make finding old games much easier to find.

Then again, I'm in the minority that doesn't think GameStop is completely terrible, which leaves me convinced that the ones I go to are among the more reliable ones, so who knows?

Well I'm still not going to trade in anything to them, only buying stuff because convenience. I do have a local retro game store (I think it's called GameTrader?) that I'd hate to see go down, though.

My wife worked at our local PnT so I was in there all the time buying shiiiiiiiiiiiiit. I even hosted multiple tournaments there for fighting games and Smash, which is one of the reasons why I loved the place....how easy it was to organize stuff like that with the store owner. GS needs to do more tournaments and such but I digress, are the gamestops already stocked with older games or is it only certain stores atm? I recently left Korea for training back in the states and the gamestop I visited didnt have any "older" games

No thanks. I'll go to Game Craze or the mom and pop places instead. This is just Gamestop trying to muscle in on that market now that it's getting popular again.

You know, if I had to I would rather sell my classic stuff on eBay or something else, because the prices I get from trade ins with recently released games is absolute garbage. Gamestop is the last place I would be dropping games, unless I seriously need to get rid of a game somehow.

The only good thing about GameStop for me is that I found a sealed brand new GTA: San Andreas for PC that had not been touched since the year it released (And I found another game there, too. Dust Generations. Go through classic and modern dust levels as 2004 Dust and 2015 Dust).

Other than that, if I were to trade my video games, I wouldn't touch that place with a 100 mile pole. 9 games I traded im, and the best thing I could get was a pre-owned Borderlands 2. I swapped that the fuck in for a real copy of Borderlands 2, and didn't care if I had to spend my money for it.

Although I would like to get rid of all these Gamecube games I have because I don't have a Gamecube anymore, stayin' the fuck away.

Alright, so I looked up some really, really collector's edition Genesis games and this is what I dug up.

Alright, so now that Gamestop is accepting trade ins of older games, I tried to dig up how much they'd pay for a trade in of a game like this, but I couldn't find anything of use.

I will say, though, that I'm guessing you'd get 10 - 15 bucks tops.

Yay for industry giants!

I can imagine exactly how that would go:

No it isn't.

Mom and pop shops can afford to pay more for trade ins then GameStop can, and as such do just that.

Not only that but Mom and pop shops tend to be more accessable than PromotionStop.

Haven't seen a single Mom and pop where I've been. In fact, I don't think I even heard of it until today.

Yeah I'm not a fan, and I don't think anyone else should be either. While it'll be "neat" to have old games be more accessible in theory, they're ultimately not going to give near a fair price, I extremely doubt games/consoles coming in will be treated with quality and/or checked for quality, and worst of all it'll most likely close down a lot of local places that thrive on being a used game shop.

I'm just extremely tired of the monopoly Gamestop has, over here in the US anyway. Aside waltzing into a Wal-Mart or Target, the only big chain game company around is Gamestop, who by no secret to anybody know they're sketchy at best. I'd just really hate to see any of the cool shops here in Seattle go under because even more sheep flock these shit holes instead of supporting more legit businesses or at least shop online.

To elaborate on the point I was making in my joke post, any kind of economic impact it has on other stores aside and all grievances of GameStop's business practices notwithstanding, the biggest problem I have is that pretty much any store that sells older games tend to be extremely lacking in variety.  If a game is particularly good, there's going to be a significantly smaller chance that it's going to be traded at all unless there's something very wrong with that particular copy.  At least around here, every retailer for used games has pretty much nothing but sports titles (in particular, NES Golf takes up a whole shelf on its own), licensed games (based on shows, movies, or board games), or other obscure games that don't aren't really of much interest to anyone.

That being said, it's always worth it to go in and see if they have something, because the chances of them having at least one piece of gold isn't too small.  But it usually is really just one game, and your chances of getting it really do boil down to being at the right place at the right time.  I got almost all the Mega Drive Sonic games and Mega Man X for $25 (the latter being $20 of the total) once, but I haven't seen a single classic Sonic game or a single Mega Man game (classic or otherwise) since then.  The circumstances may be different because GameStop is a more established brand, but I still don't picture it being too different in that regard.  Even when they were still selling GBA games towards the tail end of the original DS' lifespan, I vividly remember their selection extending to mostly movie-based games or things that aren't really that interesting.

The only thing that bugs me about this is that rumor that Gamestop destroys games they can't sell. These games come from an era where games were lucky to see a print run that broke 500,000. If they destroyed mass quantities of these games the retro market would be even worse than it currently is.

...I have mixed feelings about this. On one hand, good for Gamestop trying to get more general appeal. On the other, this means other stores I go to like VideoGamesNY and 8-bit and up might get less business and I'd much rather shop there than trade anything to gametop....

They don't. They throw away games that just don't plain work anymore.

Well that's stupid. There's ways of repairing discs and carts.

There's a lot of different factors in why GameStop, among other places, throw away damaged goods. They aren't the only retail store that does that.

I'll be down if:

-said consoles actually come with the AV cords that let me see and hear what I'm doing

-said consoles/games work

On the subject of mom and pop shops, point some out in DC and I'll check 'em out. Otherwise, I'll continue doing my business at the eeeevil GameStop.
