Worst boss fights.

This a thread where we can all tell our own story of our least favorite boss fights.

Now keep in my not every bad boss fight has to be bad because of how freakin hard it is. In fact in my example this boss fight is bad for the opposite reason.

I picked this image for a reason. The Panda King is the fourth boss of Sly cooper and thievius racoonus. After the first 3 bosses which weren't extremely difficult but still took some degree of skill, we get to the fourth boss and what do we get.

Basically just run up to him and hit him over and over and over. His attacks are easy to dodge to, in fact a lot of them I could just stand completely still and never get hit by them.

Freedom Planet is my favorite game of all time. The characters are all very likable and entertaining, Lord Brevon is a great villain, and gameplay is fun, rewarding, engaging, and difficult yet fair at the same time. It took the Sonic formula and added flavors of other games such as Gunstar Heroes to the mix and it worked to near perfection.

That being said, there was one part of the game that I dislike, and that was facing Brevon's little mech-crawler thing the first time as Carol.

With Lilac, I have no issue with this boss fight. Minor spoiler ahead, so be warned.

You face this boss again as phase 1 of the final boss - I don't have an issue with that battle as either character because of the way the map is set up is more supportive for both playstyles as opposed to here, which it isn't set up very well for Carol's playstyle specifically.

Anyway, facing this guy as Carol is a gigantic pain in the ass because of the way her character handles. She's a wall climbing type character who lacks the ability to move as fast as Lilac and lacks the ability to jump as high - the only way to gain any form of height as Carol is to use the jump springs or take advantage of her wall climbing ability, which the latter of the two does more than make up for her shortcomings in both speed and jump height when used correctly. The game is aware of that and will often give you what you need to succeed when using either character due to their vastly different playstyles.

The issue with this boss is that it doesn't really do that.

While the first part of its attack pattern when you play as Carol is initially a non-issue, it's the only time you can do damage to this boss - it will generally lead you towards the middle of the map, and there isn't any other time you can attack it except for this phase. So you don't only want to attack it here, but you need to. Otherwise, there is literally no other way to defeat this boss.

Then this is where the issues begin - like I said, it leads you to the middle of the map. The second part of its attack pattern will have it momentarily fly away from where you are, only to come back in a dead swoop at you from either side. This was something that required a good deal of reaction from Lilac, but using her special or her double jump at the right time would allow you to jump above him and avoid damage. While it wasn't easy, it was still fair.

For Carol, they didn't give you anything in the middle part of the map - where you will inevitably be after the first part of his attack pattern - except for two bounce springs. Carol lacks Lilac's jump height, so you can't just double jump at the right time for him to miss you. She also lacks Lilac's speed, so you can't run a few steps away from the springs and run back to get enough bounce height for him to miss you, because he'll probably hit you before you can even turn around.

The only way you can avoid taking damage from this move is to manage to land yourself directly beside the springs after the first part of his attack pattern. Then - at precisely the right time - take a step to the side and you'll reach the height of your jump while he zooms under you.

It has to be at the height of your jump due to the size of the boss you're facing. Anything lower will result in you getting hit. This requires twitch reflexes to time it just right, because there's less than a second's worth of reaction time to this. There's nothing else for Carol's playstyle to use other than those two springs, too, which is why this is a major problem.

At first, I just assumed it to be due to a personal lack of skill. I tried approaching it from different angles, such as using Carol's special move at the right time to avoid taking any damage, but it didn't work due to how quickly the special bar depleted and at best I'd just get hit by the ass end of the boss and still take damage. It required no lesser reflexes than the initial problem I was having.

I only managed to defeat this boss battle after many, many attempts of getting the reflexes right. It's not an easy boss battle by any means, even with Lilac, but it's frustrating because Lilac and Carol don't play similarly at all and the devs didn't seem to take that in mind when they made it. It required skill when you play it as Lilac, which is what I like - but with Carol, it almost felt as if you required luck because the setup was just so centered on gaining height somehow, and the middle of the map had nothing Carol could use to gain height except for those two fucking springs, which I dare say required Turbo Tunnel tier reflexes to use to a way that you could avoid take damage from.

Thing is, they managed to do this when you face this same boss later on - make it to where it suits both playstyles in a way that requires skill, patience, and determination instead of reflexes that go beyond catlike to just being sheer luck at times. So yeahh.

The game is still great and it's easily my favorite game ever. I just think that they didn't do a very good job of taking both play styles into consideration here when making this particular boss battle, and therefore I didn't get a real kick out of it.

I might as well share the obvious pick:

Remember Yoshi's Island's final battle?

Climactic, challenging, incredible music, and it introduced the (then-) amazing concept of Bowser becoming a giant!

So you'd think, almost two decades later, Nintendo would be able to top it. Well, they gave us this:

...Really? Baby Bowser just hops around, raising and lowering platforms- which does absolutely nothing!- and breathing extremely slow fireballs. Not to mention the music is incredibly boring.

But wait! There's more! You get twice the terrible Bowser fights at half the quality! Adult Bowser literally comes out of nowhere because ripping off the original YI wasn't enough; let's rehash concepts from YI DS, too!

And he does the exact same thing as his toddler counterpart!

Yoshi's New Island as a whole was just a lazy rehash meant to cash in on the nostalgia of the original, and it reaches its peak at the final boss. Why do I hate this so much? Well, not only is it pathetic in its own right, it sullies the memories I have of the original! Now I can't replay the original Baby Bowser fight without these terrible voice clips and music getting stuck in my head!

Time Eater in Sonic Generations. Boring, confusing, annoying voices screaming about a homing shot...yeah, twas pretty bad.

As for non-Sonic related boss, probably Ansem-Riku in Kingdom Hearts. Holy shit it's hard, like really hard! The jump in difficulty at that point in the game just comes out of nowhere and it took me several tries before I kicked his ass. Unpredictable moveset, hard to hit...but man it felt good when I finally beat Ansem-Riku!
